What's shocking is that Hunter actually did a radio tour this fall to try to save the song, and it still failed to make top 20! Yikes.
Is it selling/testing poorly because the "tattoo" lyrics are too unbelievable for listeners? I'm grasping at straws on why a seemingly catchy tune failed to be a hit. The only other thing I can think of is that the verses are often too wordy, and I don't think it's as well-written as Dan & Shay's similarly "tattoo"-themed song "Show You Off". I can see why radio PDs went with "Show You Off" instead.

Call me crazy, but the first several times I heard this song, I had a major internal freakout when the vocals enter because it sounded at first like Sara Evans... I literally follow every step of her career, so there is 0% chance of her new releases catching me by surprise. But still, the start of this song made me wonder if I had missed something! I mean, just at first when I was in the limbo of having no clue about this song whatsoever, the delivery, style, and timbre of the first line sounded similar to Sara. Once I realized it was Hunter it became obvious, of course.
Seriously though, I feel like if you lowered Sara's voice about one step it would sound exactly like the first couple lines of this song... I may have to experiment with this...

"Tattoo's" taken the turn for the worst. Its down over 100 spins today and over 600k in audience since Sunday.
This is pretty much done and will not make the top 20. Like I mentioned before, Hunter has been stuck from #30-#25 on both charts for over 10 weeks now and it's just too much to ask for a song to be able to hold on that long.

I'm starting to wonder if this will go recurrent this week. Its daily losses have picked up a bit, as it continues to flounder in the 20s. At this point, I don't see it ever making the top 20, so I'm not sure what Atlantic has to gain by continuing to push it. Maybe this close to the holidays, they'll leave it alone, and then try something new in January. I was a week early I guess, but I'm pretty sure that this will go recurrent this week (on Billboard, at least). It ended up posting a very small audience gain on Monday's chart, so I guess they could give it a grace week, but it's already had one of those recently, if I remember correctly. I wouldn't be shocked to see it stay on, but my guess is that they'll pull it. Regardless, it's been a pretty disappointing run at radio for Hunter and this album. I imagine that they'll attempt a third single in January, but I also wouldn't rule out moving on completely to a third album, to try and gain some momentum back.

This should have been a much better chart run. They could try to save the album with Storyline or move on from here.

I think we will definitely see a 3rd single, it would be too soon to give up completely, and I doubt he has recorded much new material yet. I'm kind of surprised this got such a cold reception on radio and digitally. I think would have done much better if it was the first single, but this might be the case where the first single failing just completely kills the whole album. While I think Hunter's album is mostly radio friendly, there aren't any obvious smash hits on there IMO. "Storyline" and "Wild Card" should be the only two songs they consider for a 3rd single, I think they'd have the best shot.

"Wild Card" I believe would save the album. It has that same "I Want Crazy" type vibe. It could be released in January and peak in mid Summer when it'd sound best on radio.

The whole album bored me to death, no where near his first few singles... not surprised it's failing.

That "Tattoo Your Name" tour was some waste considering this still failed to make the top 20. Things are starting to look bad for Hunter. He's had three singles in a low become the lowest-peaking single of his career.
I imagine radio will get either "Storyline" or "You Think You Know Somebody" next. Either could be a hit. Country radio really likes Hunter and after last album he was on the fast track to A-list status. I believe Warner just totally mishandled single choices for this album. Country radio never takes kindly to ballads like "Invisible," especially not from new artists, and "Tattoo" probably came across as corny to a lot of people. The two songs I mentioned sound much more similar to the type of music that made Hunter Hayes so popular. I can see an adds date for the first week of 2015, or maybe Warner will try to give Hunter's new single an adds date at the end of 2014, so Hunter will be the front-runner for adds the first week of the new year, like "Bottoms Up" was this past January.

I think you're right, this will go recurrent on Billboard. Its 7-day spin loss on MB is at exactly 200 this morning, and I have rarely seen Billboard give a grace week to a song that has lost 100+ spins. So even a loss of 150 should send it to recurrentland. I don't have its audience loss for the week but I think it's down about 600k there. No reason to keep this afloat. I'd let the post-holiday debuts get their gains underway, and release a new single in early to mid-Feb. Whatever Pulse says to release, I think they should pick that one.

Officially sent recurrent on Billboard tonight.
No surprise there as it lost just way too much in the way of audience since Saturday. It's Billboard peak was #24 and MB peak was #25.

I don't mean to bump a dead thread... but are they ever going to release "You Think You Know Somebody" as a single?? "If it's Just Me" is also becoming a missed opportunity. I'd love to stay but I've got to say, I'd rather be free is probably the best lyric of his career. Hate that this one died out in the mid twenties.

I'm thinking we'll see a new single announcement in a few weeks. If the 3rd single doesn't make the top 20, the album will be done and Hunter will have to rethink his strategy if he wants the success of his debut album again. "You Think You Know Somebody" and "If It's Just Me" are awesome songs. So is "Wild Card" and "Storyline." IMO they have great choices left. But I thought when "Tattoo" was released it would be a no brainer #1. I think "Invisible" really hurt him with radio. I hope he can be forgiven and get a 2nd chance.

I love "Invisible" and it's probably my favorite single he's released thus far, but it definitely did not serve him well as a lead single. Even with that misstep, I was surprised that "Tattoo" failed to even break into the Top 20. At this point, the momentum for the Storyline appears to be pretty low and I'm not sure even the most radio-friendly songs left on the album will do much better than "Tattoo" at this point, if they even make it that far. It's probably for the best if Hunter & co. just come back with a new lead single for his next release.
