One of my least favorite songs on the album. I knew this was next, but I'm still not happy about it being released. (I would've picked "DJ Tonight" as a much better upbeat single)
Hopefully they'll release a song like "I Have Never Been To Memphis" after this one.

RF takes one step forward and two steps back. (not to be confused with the 1987 Desert Rose Band single)

Love the new album, but man, I cannot recall another act that has made so many puzzling single choices over the course of a career. "DJ Tonight" or "Life's A Song" would've been great choices. Considering the climate of radio now, though, I'm guessing their label thought this was a surefire smash Interestingly, there was a recent interview where Gary said he didn't care for one song on the album, and it was likely to be the second single.

Joey's absolutely right. "DJ Tonight", though to me is over produced and is leaning poppy (but this is Rascal Flatts we're talking about), would have been a better upbeat option for the summer. This is easily my least favorite single from them since "Summer Nights".
"I Have Never Been To Memphis" is the best track on the record. The only hope for that to be a single is for it to follow this one, come the fall/winter.

I never thought "Memphis" would get released but where they have played "Riot" live for Taste of Country and radio shows I was hoping it'd be released. This song isn't bad, just subpar to others.

Worst song in the album. Dissapointing.

I actually like this, and I can totally see why they picked it -- it's probably the safest single choice they could've gone with -- though I agree that the Rewind album holds far better songs. I wouldn't call this my least-favorite on the album and I don't dislike it, but there are a lot of other great songs that I am hoping they can release third/fourth once this does well and opens the door for something like "I Have Never Been to Memphis" (easily the best track on the new record imo), "Riot," or "Life's Been a Song."

I'm usually not a fan of Rascal Flatt's music, but I surprisingly found myself enjoying "Rewind". But this song I can't get into. It's not terrible, but to me it just sounds real clumsy, and doesn't sound well suited for them to sing. This type of song would fit Cole Swindell or Thomas Rhett better than RF. I too will be looking forward to "I Have Never Been To Memphis", the only other song on the album that I really liked.

Since some are discussing "I Have Never Been To Memphis" here, I started a thread for it here if anyone is interested :)

...Eh. Disappointed by this. Don't think it's really a bad song, but I'm not really into it like I was "Rewind".

This is horrendous. Sorry for the negativity, but I don't like this at all. It's too bad because while "Rewind" was no masterpiece, it was a step in the right direction for them. Gary sounds awkward and uncomfortable singing these lyrics.

I like how different it sounds. It's been AGES since there was a RF song where Gary doesn't do that high pitched squeal at any point. He actually sounds pleasant when singing in a lower register. Just happy to hear them doing something so out of their usual style.

Ryan Hurd, a guy I write with about 4 times a year was one of the co-writers on this song (he also has the Swon Brothers latest single) also Neil Mason, from Cadillac 3 & Aaron Eshuis co-wrote this. The demo of Payback was on the same demo session of a song I co-wrote with Ryan Hurd & Brett Tyler called "Drunk People". The demo of Payback was amazing, it was perfect. It was immediately put on hold for Flatts. Damn near a year goes by and we all finally get to hear Flatts version. You could hear a pin drop in the room after we all listened to it. We were like "W.T.F?" The double time at the end of the song was not in the original and they changed at least 6 words from the original demo. I hope for my friends sake that the song has some success but I really wish y'all could hear the demo. Yeah, it would be great to hear the demo. I love the song, but not Gary LeVox's vocals. I've been hearing this on the radio quite a bit.

This is like a guilty pleasure for me, because I actually quite enjoy this one. I know I probably shouldn't, but I do, lol.

It has to be really concerning for Rascal Flatts that the sales for this one are pretty far behind so far. The song is top 30 on Billboard now, and I would think being a Rascal Flatts song would vault this song at least into the top 50 on iTunes Country chart. "Rewind" sold decently, and they're album still had a decent debut, but they are nowhere near as popular as they once were. I don't know many more good years at radio they have lefts.

Top 30 on Mediabase is where most countdowns start from these days. This is when sales will 'jump.'

The sales for this aren't lagging too bad. The bigger name artists usually start off slower with single sales (unless it's a lead single) as their songs move up the charts quicker. Basically it takes a little more time for sales to catch up with airplay whereas for some newer artists, it's the opposite...it takes a bit longer for airplay to catch up with sales. But I'd expect this one to be performing right on par with at least the Big & Rich, Parmalee, and ZBB singles in another 2-3 weeks.

It was just posted on the Flatts Facebook page that "Rewind" is now available to stream.
I'm sure sales for "Payback" will pick up once this is higher on the charts.
I don't care for this one, but I couldn't see it flaming out just yet. I'd give it a few more weeks to really judge.

I really wish y'all could hear the demo. https%3A//soundcloud.com/neil-mason-music/paybackI heard this demo awhile ago, and I gotta be honest and say I don't like it. The vocal is so harsh and grating, and overall I think the Flatts version has more energy, whereas the demo just feels like it's lagging.

Yeah, I don't think the demo is good at all. I actually really like what RF did with it. They brought a lot of personality to the vocal performance and I agree with @carrieflattsfan that they added a lot of energy to the track as well. Everything from the little chuckle in between the "I'mma lean you way back / Yeah, I'mma lean you way back" line to the "P-p-p-p-payback" at the end give it some extra spark, imo. I also like how they changed a few of the lyrics, noticeably replacing 'Internet' with 'Instagram' which I feel works better for two reasons: 1) it makes the song more appealing to the younger generation and 2) the idea of "pictures on the Internet" has a more negative connotation to it than Instagram. Usually when a song implies something about pictures on the Internet, they tend to be the kind of pictures you don't actually want anyone to see.

Rascal Flatts will receive the Jim Reeves International Award from the Academy of Country Music on Tuesday, September 9th during the annual ACM Honors ceremony held at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN.

Is it just me or is this climbing kinda slow for an RF song? I would think it'd be Top 20 at least by now.

Is it just me or is this climbing kinda slow for an RF song? I would think it'd be Top 20 at least by now. It's moving very slow, but again, the charts--they're stacked. Eric Church and the Zac Brown Band have been moving very slowly as well, along with Miranda & Carrie as well as Keith Urban, but just to a lesser extent. Hunter Hayes got off to a slow start, too. No one went recurrent last week, and this week, it looks like only Brad and Lee will go recurrent. Parmalee, Big & Rich, The Swon Brothers, Eli Young Band, and Chase Rice have all refused to go recurrent. They've been gaining slowly for week after week and the rest of the chart is really backed up. It's really hard for Big Machine and Rascal Flatts to get this song into higher rotation across the board when too many other songs are still gaining, and it doesn't help when other more "momentum" artists just blow right on past (Blake Shelton is the obvious one, but even Maddie & Tae's song is flying, and both the Sam Hunt and Little Big Town singles have been received more warmly by radio than "Payback" has).
