Landmarx presents The 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time
Addendum I: #600-501
As we reminisce over the "landmark" achievement* that was my original 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time list, I realized that enough time has passed that we can safely revisit and add to it.
When the original list was compiled, it started out as a bank of 1,000 songs. Said list was edited down through process of elimination to a ranking of 500 songs that I both liked, and deemed culturally significant. Through this revisitation, an additional 100 songs will be added to the list as if it were a "hall of fame."
If one looks at the original list, they might ask - "Only one Leonard Cohen track?" or "No Nick Cave? No Siouxsie & The Banshees?" Let's rectify that. Remember that the criteria is simple. It's a cultural/historical approach guided by my personal tastes. Think of it as what I would submit as a ballot to a larger publication's list of GOAT songs.
We'll begin this ASAP. But first, here's a recap of the original list of 500.
*achievement = me finishing it.

Okay, I missed most of your last recap but that list is so amazing. There are some I don't know (and need to check out) though. I will definitely be following this.

600 SOUTH BRONX Boogie Down Productions
Released: 1986 album: Criminal Minded (1987)
A classic hip-hop diss track, well-deserving of a spot in this hall of fame.

599 A WELL RESPECTED MAN The Kinks
Released: 1965 album: Kwyet Kinks (EP) (1965)
A send-up of traditional British class systems, and one of the Kinks' most indelible classics.

598 SMILING FACES SOMETIMES The Undisputed Truth
Released: 1971 album: The Undisputed Truth (1971)
Dark and funky, this track reflected the distrust that most black Americans felt toward society in post-Civil Rights America. On the flipside, it's Soul 101 and still a blast to groove to.

597 THOUSANDS ARE SAILING The Pogues
Released: 1988 album: If I Should Fall From Grace With God (1988)
Taking their place within this pantheon of songs that shaped modern music, the Pogues celebrated another facet of the American experience with an anthem describing the turbulent and often tragic experience of Irish immigrants.

596 SEE EMILY PLAY Pink Floyd
Released: 1967 album: single (1967)
An interesting psychedelic track that takes the imagination on a wilde ride and stretches the limits of pop music, from the band who would later define 1970s progressive rock.

595 ANYTHING, ANYTHING (I'LL GIVE YOU) Dramarama
Released: 1985 album: Cinéma Vérité (1985)
A slice of 80s college rock heaven from a band often forgotten as a part of the genre's history. Still, this song persists as a favorite among those who cling to the glory days of the garage sound.

594 GO ALL THE WAY Raspberries
Released: 1972 album: Raspberries (1972)
This is where power pop took off. This is the root of one of the most satisfying sounds within the musical landscape. So damn delicious.

593 THE KILLING MOON Echo & The Bunnymen
Released: 1984 album: Ocean Rain (1984)
Sophisticated, dark; the Echo & The Bunnymen experience is like putting on a suit, sipping wine and staring out a picture window, and letting go of whatever else is on your mind. The new wave pioneers absolutely killed this.

592 ORANGE BLOSSOM SPECIAL Johnny Cash
Released: 1965 album: Orange Blossom Special (1965)
Mr. Cash took this 1930s bluegrass standard and turned it into something that's become part of the fabric of American popular culture. The train whistle, the infectious rhythm, and the spirit of the "wanderer" archetype. It's time this song took its place among "those" songs. The great ones.

591 COMMON PEOPLE Pulp
Released: 1995 album: Different Class (1995)
Picking up where #599 left off, this take on a well-off girl's desire to live like "common people," viewing the lives of the poor and working class as easier or even glamorous has become a darling of the Indie era hipsters, and often cited as one of the greatest songs of all-time. I'll bite.

600 - Awesome choice, and not one I would have predicted. Promising start. 599 - Love The Kinks and this track is no exception. I love the way the chorus invites a sing-along while dripping with acid. 598 - Another amazing song. Way ahead of its time, too. 597 - Nice song! Not sure I'd heard it before, as I only know a handful of Pogues tracks. Should rectify that someday. 596 - Early Pink Floyd does not get its due... which isn't to say that it's not respected. Just not respected enough, in my opinion. 595 - Very cool! A song whose popularity today far exceeds what one would think by going back and looking at its (lack of) chart stats. Love this song. 594 - The Raspberries are power pop at its finest. Awesome song and group. I slightly prefer "I Wanna Be With You" despite the similar sound, but this one isn't far behind. 593 - Yay '80s new wave getting more love. I recently-ish started listening to Sirius XM's First Wave station, and they have a few Echo tracks in rotation, this included. Reminded me how great their work sounds. 592 - Hard to go wrong with Johnny Cash. Classic train song. 591 - If I were to make a list of my top songs of the '90s (which I wouldn't try to do because making decisions is hard), this would probably be in the top five. So amazing. <3
I am going to love this.

590 WHO'S SORRY NOW Connie Francis
Released: 1957 album: single (1957)
Early pop-rock queen Connie Francis' breakthrough hit that helped bring a female voice to the 1950s rock and roll movement. The thumping, prodding beat helps to pester the songs subject, to whom she taunts, "You had your way, now you must pay, I'm glad that you're sorry now."

589 WORKING CLASS HERO John Lennon
Released: 1970 album: John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970)
A sparse, minimalist commentary on the limited prospects and lack of hope for working class people to rise above the lower and middle classes. It's sharp, biting, and Lennon's political jabs influenced countless singer-songwriters to come.

588 I CAN'T GET NEXT TO YOU The Temptations
Released: 1969 album: Puzzle People (1969)
A 1969 number one hit from Motown's finest. On this one they strutted, grooved and partied like only old-school soul masters have a right to do. For fiery magnificence, you can't do much better than this one.

587 PETER PIPER Run-D.M.C.
Released: 1986 album: Raising Hell (1986)
A jam. Raising Hell had no shortage of jams, but this mashed up references to a vast variety of fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters, along with some well-executed self-promotion. It's better than it has any right to be.

586 AMERICAN TUNE Paul Simon
Released: 1973 album: There Goes Rhymin' Simon (1973)
Paul Simon isn't short on lyrical masterpieces, and this one stands out due to the combination of an anthemic title and a bleak, melancholy and almost dreary narrative. It's not patriotism, it's realism, something Americans don't get nearly enough of.

585 SHE'S NOT THERE The Zombies
Released: 1964 album: Begin Here (1965)
These guys were head-and-shoulders above many of their British Invasion counterparts, in that they made great use of psychedelic melodies and offbeat lyrics, including several hits that gave viewers a delicious sense of uneasiness and mixed emotions.

584 VIRGINIA PLAIN Roxy Music
Released: 1972 album: single (1972)
This song epitomized the uniqueness and brash quirkiness of early Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry's polished yet organic knack for creating something that we can only stand back and take in as mere mortals.

583 NEARLY LOST YOU Screaming Trees
Released: 1992 album: Sweet Oblivion (1992)
An oft-forgotten grunge opus that combined aspects of power pop and college alternative, and a chorus that brings the house down. It's like a completely satisfying piece of guitar candy.
