I can tell by the lyrics rowdawg21 provided us, the song really doesn't say much. Should be a hit, though.

Not really a fan of this. It's not terrible, and maybe it in time will grow on me. Just sounds like a super lazy effort in my opinion, nothing really makes it stand out to me. The beat/instrumentation is very forgetable. I hope the rest of the album is better than this.

This is great. This is how a 40+ man should sound when singing a song about youth. It's a fresh upbeat sound that makes an instant impact when I hear it.

I'm not in love with Kenny's delivery of the vocal, but I really like this song and I think his vocal will grow on me. I wish it had a bit more personality to it, but other than that I think this one is great.

At least there's some intelligent life form visible behind the lyrics. Considering the dearth of good country song lyrics throughout the chart, I don't think this one's half bad. I'm not saying it's profound, but being profound is a bit too high a standard to apply to country radio songs. Yep yep mmmm.

Judging by the preview, I thought I'd love it....turns out, this is really a snoozer. No catchiness whatsoever. It's still better than bro-country though, so there's that.

Kenny seems to want to cash in on the bro-co trend with this song (trailer parks, trucks, beaches, buses, making out on living room couches, smoke on Saturday night. You get the idea here). For instance "sister got a boyfriend daddy doesn't like" sounds nursery rhymish to me. Another thing the riff is similar to Sugarland's "Stuck Like Glue". You probably could sing the entire song to it.
With that I see a high debut for the song probably in the 35-40 range but I don't really see it going too far probably not making Top 10 and has a similar fate as Tim McGraw's "Lookin' For That Girl"

I think I will wait for Florida Georgia Line and Pitbull to join Kenny on this song. Seems like the perfect song for them. EDIT: Seriously though I would love for a duet with Kenny and Grace Potter to be on the new album.

I'm not saying it's profound, but being profound is a bit too high a standard to apply to country radio songs. Yep yep mmmm. I pretty much agree with this. The lyrics I find pretty decent and interesting, and that may be the fact that the lyrical content of the average country single on the chart is non-existent or at least uncreative. The biggest problem is the overall melody of the song along with the annoying "hey's" littered throughout the chorus. This will take at least a few more listens but my first impression is solid lyrics with unique instrumentation but the melody isn't that strong. I also agree with countrygirl918 that Kenny's vocal delivery leaves for some to be desired but Kenny was never the strongest vocalist anyway IMO.

I think the song is a little loud/overproduced, but I will take it over most of the garbage on the radio these days--At least the lyrics are intelligent!!

I'm not sure why people are finding these lyrics to be "intelligent". It's pretty much just a list of cliches about growing up in the US and memories of ones youth. It's not even done creatively in my opinion. I like Kenny as much as others, but I'm not going to give him a free pass on his lyrics when everyone loves to hammer Luke and others.

So far I can only find one person who said the lyrics are "intelligent". I personally said I found the lyrics to be interesting and specific enough to not be cliche, but again that's my own opinion. I also don't find most to be "hammering" Luke and others. I'd like to think most of the posters here are respectful enough to list certain aspects of Luke's songs (including their lyrics) like "That's My Kind Of Night" and "Play It Again" for why they don't enjoy it or find them underwhelming. Obviously some decide to be funny about it but I think it's pretty unfair to say "everyone loves to hammer Luke and others".

Kenny's song will probably debut at #1 like Garth's song did after a long absence at radio. Kenny will have to fight for his place back in radio that now belongs to Luke Bryan or was Kenny ever that big?? I just wish things were like it use to be when a song was played on huge request by fans and not by labels duking it out or favoritism shown to certain artist and corporate people deciding who the next big thing is. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA let me know when Luke has 8 entertainer of the year awards. Well, Luke is just getting started in a way different time and Kenny has had his day, if this new song is a sign of his new music. The younger fans are all about Luke and will not understand much of this latest song of Kenny's...IMO. Also his vocals are pretty bad on the song, IMO. So dear, don't laugh tooooo hard just yet!!

the song did not jump out at me on first listen as something I'm going to really like..
I love Kenny.. but I haven't loved anything he has released for a long time. His last 2 albums were subpar at best.

'Good Girl' debuted at #30 @ Billboard and at #37 @ Country Aircheck/Mediabase after being sent to radio on a Friday (Feb. 25th, 2012), although KAJA & KEEY provided 4 of the 24 spins which it received the night before; AFAIK, nobody jumped the gun on this last night.
I wouldn't be surprised if this catchy little number enjoys a similar debut or even higher at both charts since the MB panel is much larger these days as is Billboard'.
By comparison, 'Never Wanted Nothing More', which received three full days of airplay at CA/MB & four @ Billboard, debuted at #44 & #37 respectively on the two charts before taking huge jumps the following week, including a #44-#20 jump for 'NWNM' @ Mediabase on the same week that the absolutely wonderful 'Find Out Who Your Friends Are' replaced 'Moments at #1 @ CA/MB 7 years ago last week, and #37-#19 for 'Good Girl'.
Over & under to #1---I'll go with 12 weeks.

Oh and yes Luke might be bigger on the radio now, but he still doesn't compare to Kenny on touring. When Luke Bryan comes to my town he plays at an area. When Kenny comes he plays at the football stadium. By that standard Luke has some catching up to do. I'd say IMO regarding all this, but it's a matter of record not opinion.

I think that, by 2014 standards, this song's got intelligent lyrics. We aren't listening to radio broadcasting songs by Bob McDill or Merle Haggard or Dolly Parton these days. For example, situating the sexual gymnastics in the parking lot of the Baptist church is at least semi-amusing. And putting the lies told about sexual successes into the lyrics was positively genius, since in most of today's songs women give in automatically, even up in airplanes, as soon as they detect a man in their presence who has "needs." I'll concede the standards I'm going by are low, which I tried to mention in my original post. But we live in the world we live in, and this is more intelligent than most of the top 20. Brad and George have reasonably well-written songs too, but theirs aren't exactly Haggard-like either.

Ultimately, the decision on wether the lyrics are clever is left up to each individual. I personally just feel the lyrics are generic and average. I guess I'm just bummed because I was hoping for a song like "The Good Stuff", "Who'd you be Today" or even "Beer in Mexico". This song might grow on me, but I'm already looking forward to the next single.

Maybe not as intelligent as say, Kacey Musgraves or Brandy Clark's songwriting, but as for comparing to today's bro-country, it is. At least this song is telling the "cliched" story of growing up in a relatable, fresh way, plus it's done in a the storytelling way that country is known for (or used to be known for). And I'm not uploading this picture to be rude, but to show the cliches that bro-country is full of, whereas this song is not:

Can we please stop suggesting that Kenny is all about island/beach music?
When this song makes it into the top 20 it will be his 50th top 20 hit. Out of those 50 songs only about 10 could be put in that category.
How forever feels, No shoes, When the sun goes down, Anything but mine, Summertime, Beer in mexico, shiftwork, I'm alive, Pirate flag, and When i see this bar are the only one's with true beach/island references. Everybody wants to go to heaven and Out last night could be thrown in there based on instrumental I suppose.
That's 20-25% of his catalog of released singles. How about we now compare that with nostalgia?
Don't happen twice, Young, The good stuff, A lot of things different, There goes my life, I go back, Keg in the closet, Never wanted nothin more, Don't blink, Down the road, The boys of fall, Somewhere with you, and now American kids gives us 13.
So with an extra category you still only get to 50%.
Take someone like Keith Urban who has never really done it for me, I would never be tempted to go in his thread and post something that all he ever sings about is being in love or breaking up, despite that being my perception. Kenny's feel good island/beach vibe is apart of his music. Asking for that to go away is to suggest Toby shouldn't be so political.
So I'm asking nicely, can we move on from this obsession we have of generalizing everyone's music down to one unfair category?

I didn't say you did, but you said it was cliche, and my point was that it is a lot less cliche than bro-country. Yes, there are hundreds of songs about growing up, but this one at least is trying to be intelligent.

I like the lyrics. But I can't apply the word intelligent to them.
