Shouldn't we get new Hot AC, country, rhythmic and alt (we know it's BANKS - but where's the confirmation) selections before we get a new pop On the Verge song?
Musically, I feel like this makes far more sense as a Hot AC On the Verge selection, but he's marketable and an "it" guy among other high-profile artists, so I could see them wanting to give it the pop exposure.

The next On The Verge selection should be made public next week, if their existing schedule is any indication. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets it. I hope not. They should give it to Big Data, Milky Chance, or Vance Joy. I don't saying they should give it to this, but why they should give it to song that are selling way less than this right now that compete exactly for the same market? Specially when this song is way riskier than those three

Specially when this song is way riskier than those three Frankly, it all comes down to the real point of this program. If the point is to give exposure to songs that wouldn't otherwise receive it, then this (or any of the aforementioned songs) is a horrible choice. Hozier is one of the most buzzworthy names in music, and his song obviously has recognition with the masses. The others were also massive alternative hits (and quickly becoming big at Hot AC) and so are also entering the pop world in a position of advantage. If they can't get airplay on their own... But if the point is for iHeartRadio to pick risk-free songs that will 100% sell and gain lasting airplay once the program ends, then it's a great choice. Based on the songs they've chosen recently (Habits, Rather Be, Jealous, etc), which either come from established artists or already had ridiculously prime opportunities to succeed, it seems they're going the second route.

But all that songs were inside top 40 when they got the deal.
One thing is give a song an oportunity if the channel likes it, and other very different is make a song a top 20 success out of the blue. With the exception of Dangerous the rest of the songs are charting on billboard hot 100, but right now only Take me to church in on the top 50 pop.
One can argue that Rather be became a hit due to the deal (and it's probably true), but the song was inside the top 50 for a good while, so at least it was able to make the chart by itself.
take me to church was a risky move three months ago, but now it's a song that was number one on AAA, it's top 5 on alternative, climbing on Hot AC and selling really really well, so the risks even with the lyrics and the video are a lot less, and i think it has a chance to become a decent hit, with or without deal

My point was that the notion of choosing a song that isn't "risky" *seems* counter intuitive for a program that is supposed to be finding true diamonds in the rough. But you're absolutely right that iHeartRadio has thus far seemed to go with "safe" choices (The Big Bang is the exception, and that ended up not really working out once the program ended).

Anyway, till now, Rather be and Habits deals were a big success (Jealous probably ends being a success too). Rather be is a great song, but it wasn't really working till the deal, and the song exploded on itunes after that (wich means people really liked the song when they had the oportunity to hear it). Habits was way more popular that it's pop chart run indicates, so the deal simply put things in its place.
Chosing a song that it's doing nothing it's risky specially if the song is not something special or if it doesn't react to the gains on expossure which is basically what happened with the big bang. If the deal doesn't make the song explode but it's a great song from an unknown artist at least it's a risky choice but if they chose something generical from a typical pop artist and it doesn't work it's a big faliure

More proof that impact week adds don't tell the full story...
The add count looked horrible given all the buzz, but it's getting monstrous updates regardless.

This was just bubbling under the top 50 waiting to explode. I still think this is one of the riskier (musically, lyrically and even the video) songs to cross to pop, but it's selling really well, and i'm think pop radio is ready to eat it

So happy to see this taking off. Kind of surprised it's doing better than both Riptide and Stolen Dance, but maybe they'll catch up at some point. Either way, I would love to see this be a pop smash.

In the hot ac chart, both Stolen Dance and Riptide are doing better than Take me to church. In fact Stolen dance started to climb like a future hit, but in the last days slowed a lot. Riptide is climbing at a good pace. On the other hand, Take me to church received a good amount of airplay even before it was known that it was going to be released to pop. Anyway, i won't be surprised if Riptide and Stolen dance end broken the top 50 mark, but i suppose they will need some time.

Frankly, i didn't expect to reach top 40 it would be so easy for this song (no matter how well this is doing on itunes)

Featured in a new Beats by Dre/LeBron James ad:
It's already helping the song on iTunes. It's currently #10.

Top 40 on CHR! 4 and heading to #1 on alternative, top 30 HAC. That would be a catastrophe. Regardless, I think the Foo Fighters will beat them there and alternative will avoid seeing its worst #1 since "Use Somebody"

WOW, "Church" now up to #4 on iTunes!! Beats commercials can certainly give a song a major boost, especially since they display the artist's info in the ad. We saw this last year with the Colin Kaepernick commercial featuring Aloe Blacc's song "The Man." That ad also sent the song surging inside the top 5. Hopefully Beats will continue to give this ad massive promotion.

This is definitely not a song I would see as a commercial plug for Beats, for an athlete nonetheless. But whatevs, anything to get this song the success it deserves. It's a great song.

Frankly i find very ironic this post given the fact that Stolen dance is the current number one. And nobody questions Use somebody quality outside of this forum. I can think at least ten alt number ones way worse than Use somebody, some of them very very popular (hello, ho hey)
