This one rivals Sam Hunt for the most "pop sounding" song on the charts but that might be reason enough for it to rise. Her EP is pretty solid though with strong songwriting and Kudos to Black River for getting someone other than Craig Morgan and Kellie Pickler inside the Top 40 but the real work begins now.

I thought it was worth noting in this thread (along with the Christmas songs thread) that Kelsea just released her rendition of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" to radio as it is streaming on Play Mpe. Its also available on iTunes. Christmas Songs Thread

This lost a ton of audience this week (1.4 million). Kelsea also lost 56 spins and moves from #36 to #37. I think Black River is not nearly done with this song though and I expect this to pick back up after the new year.
Gloriana's "Trouble" also lost a ton of audience (1.7 million). That one seems to be in more danger but its still relatively early. January will tell more about these songs futures.

That one seems to be in more danger but its still relatively early. January will tell more about these songs futures. Both of them rely heavily on Cumulus, more so than most other songs outside the top 30, and it appears that Cumulus dropped them in rotation this week, likely in favor of some Christmas golds. The slash in airplay was much more noticeable for these two songs, though, because a higher percentage of their airplay comes solely from Cumulus stations. Most of Kelsea's airplay loss appears to have come from Westwood One's Hot Country station, where this song was essentially reduced from 10+ spins per week to 0 this week (W1 never does this unless a song has peaked, but this is clearly because they had to drop a few songs temporarily to fit Christmas music into their playlists).

Very, very impressive six spot jump to get this in the top 30 of Billboard. I believe this is Black River's first top 30 female hit.

First time hearing this, and I quite like it. Sounds pretty radio friendly with a minor hip hop feel to the instrumentation. Seems like Black River has already done a solid job of getting it this far, hope they can keep her momentum going. Lord knows it would be refreshing to have a few female voices on the radio every now and then. I also can't buy that the 18-34 Male demographic would oppose hearing this song. It's catchy and not all too much different than something a male might record.

Just got a chance to listen to her ep. Kinda reminds me of my reaction to Sam Hunts album....stellar songs, but is it really country? Anyhow, The First Time is a smash waiting to happen.

It's now Top 30 on Mediabase as well, at #28.

With her album due to come out May 19th, that should be about perfect timing for when this should hopefully be in the Top 20. Sales for this song are also starting to become pretty decent for its airplay levels.

Okay, I've just got to post this. This is a minute long promotional video of Sabres Unpucked sponsored by Black River and owner Terry Pegula (Sabres and Black River Entertainment). Kelsea and John performed on Thursday night for the event and got into the hockey spirit. :)
I couldn't make it this year but I was there last year and the event is a ton of fun.

Gonna make a ballsy prediction...I think she could be the new girl. 8 more adds this week, getting countdown spins for the first time this weekend, and a fully supportive boss willing to pour money into his label to make a star. I'm saying her spot his will at least be top 15 when the album drops, and from there she will move on to the breezy fun summer track Dibs, www.youtube.com/embed/ZjteVLiVJOMI don't know, just got a good feeling abou this one.

As someone who doesn't mind when more contemporary pop sounds are mixed in with some country elements and lyrics (see Sam Hunt), I really like Kelsea. "Love Me Like You Mean It" has been a jam of mine since I first heard it and I'm glad that she's had thus far and I definitely think Black River will stick with this one for a while (see Craig Morgan) so I think this could definitely have a shot at top 15 and maybe even top 10.

This is really pleasant. Although when I first heard it I thought it was more of a pop song with a bit of country twang. Glad to see it doing well and would be great to have another female country artist doing well in the airplay charts. Her tone really reminds me of someone, but I can't put my finger on who.

Top 20 is looking quite good right now and I couldn't be happier. I don't think a top 10 is out of question for Kelsea

Top 20 is looking quite good right now and I couldn't be happier. I don't think a top 10 is out of question for Kelsea Top 20 is pretty much guaranteed right now. I'm still iffy on the notion this could go top 10 simply because it's a new female artist and Black River hasn't gotten a single that far but its certainly not out of the question. "Love Me Like You Mean It" is up 1.2 million in audience so far this week on MB. The past three weeks or so has really been great for this song as its up over 5 million in audience since February 16th. Kelsea and Black River have also gotten 17 new stations the past three chart weeks and "Love Me Like You Mean It" sits inside the top 25 on both MB and Billboard. In order to achieve a top 10 on either chart, Kelsea has to multiply her audience by at least, 2 and 1/2, and that's a tall task yet. Black River has never gotten a song higher than top 15 with "This Ole Boy" and "Wake Up Lovin' You", but unlike Craig's songs, Kelsea's is much younger (22 Billboard weeks) and is much hotter with its audience gains than both those songs at this point on the chart. This chart run has definitely gone as planned for Black River and word is the official music video is being released in the next two weeks.

Given that radio knows how much money this label has (The Pegula's own it after all), perhaps they're finally realizing the label will not succumb to the fate that fell on Bigger Picture, HitShop and RPMe. Black River is a label that is a passion play for the Pegula family, just like the pro sports teams and like Broken Bow was/is for Benny Brown. What's ironic is that Craig Morgan may be usurped again by a new younger artist with radio and perhaps sales like he was at BBR.

I think Craig Morgan's radio days were probably coming to an end anyway. He may still score a hit here and there, but he doesn't sell very well. And he's also in his 50's now and, well, that's just how it is with radio...the older you get, the more you struggle when it comes to airplay.

I briefly met him at the Sabres event last year and he's such a lively, enthusiastic guy with a passion for his artists. I really think they have a fantastic radio team setup and the resources like you mentioned. They are essentially the way Broken Bow was in 2003/2004.

Another great thing going for this song is the sales have adjusted accordingly with the increase in audience. It's currently #24 on the iTunes Country chart. And unlike RaeLynn's recent song "God Made Girls", this one isn't polarizing. I would love to see this one make it to the top 10, and help to break out a new female country artist.

Depends on the fan you ask. This one's "way less country" to some.

Gordon Kerr is Kim Pegula’s brother ( Link). they are very committed to the labels success and have a great promo staff. They are going to be around for awhile. I think Kelsea has a shot at top 20 w/ a peak of 14 or so. It has a way to go but its had a steady ride with no real set backs.

I think she is going to be huge...The First Time and Dibs are huge hits waiting to happen. She came along at the right time where country radio is excepting to more sounds than traditional country music. Hopefully Black River has her under a big deal, because i think she has the potential to be on a major.

She is so good and I also agree she will be big. I listened to her acoustic version of "Love me like you mean it" and i was sold on who she was and her presence she could hold one day in the genre. Im not sold however on the pop production but this is miles better than some of the trash on the charts.. :0

I'm glad this is really hitting a stride on the charts and selling well, too. I hope it can make it to the Top 10 as well. We need some more women to start emerging as actual stars at country radio, instead of this continued process of letting female artists get one 'hit' and then letting their follow-ups flounder. Her EP is very strong and I have a fairly good feeling about her chances of scoring a follow-up hit.

^ It's up another 457k in audience today as well, which brings its total over 1.6 million in gains this week. Kelsea will be at #24 or #25 on Sunday, depending on whether Brad will pass her. Black River's radio promotion department is large enough to handle John's single "On Your Lips" as well, but I'll be interested to see if this single will be affected at all by "On Your Lips". The label is all in on John's music too, so it should be interesting. Her sales, which have been brought up already by dm2081, have increased nicely as it has moved up the charts and sits at #130 on the all-genre chart, which is well ahead of the 5 songs in front of her on the rolling chart.

She got the coveted "Taylor Swift Tweet" today:
Video also came out over the weekend. Nothing special, but it's cute/charming, and it really hammers home the idea that she's going after youth listeners (as if her songs + promo work with Radio Disney didn't already make that clear).

Anybody see how her sales went after the Taylor tweet? Huge for Kelsey, wounded up having perfect timing with her video. USA Today among others wrote strories about her, just because of that tweet. Amazing the reach Taylor has.
