Judge Orders Casey Kasem's Family to Ignore Each Other
By Maria Elena Fernandez
Radio icon Casey Kasem's health took a turn for the worse late Wednesday, and so did the battle in his family over visitation rights.
The 82-year-old radio star's blood pressure plummeted, prompting doctors Wednesday night to call in the family. But a few hours later, his wife, Jean Kasem, 59, was escorted out of St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington, by security after causing a scene with her loud sobbing, two sources close to the family told NBC News. Kasem was told she could stay if she calmed down, but she did not.
On Thursday, Jean Kasem and her lawyers asked Kitsap Superior Court Judge Jennifer Forbes to issue an order granting Jean Kasem visitation rights. Forbes complied, ordering that "time with Mr. Kasem shall be shared by both sides of the family, coordinated via a neutral third party," according to the document obtained by NBC News. The judge also ordered that at all times, while on hospital property, "neither side will communicate with the other."
Because "at such time it appears that Mr. Kasem may be in his final hours, both sides should be allowed to visit Mr. Kasem at the same time," Forbes concluded.
A hospital spokesperson on Thursday issued a statement saying Casey Kasem is in critical condition and being treated for bed sores and is receiving blood pressure support medication.
"He is alert, appears comfortable at this time," according to the statement.
For nearly a year, Jean Kasem has shut out her husband's three children from another marriage and other relatives from visiting him or talking to him on the phone. Although Jean Kasem hasn't explained why she has taken such drastic actions, she has accused his children of wanting his $80 million fortune.
On May 6, she removed him from a facility in Santa Monica, California, and took him to Washington to stay at a friend's house. His daughter Kerri Kasem, who has been appointed conservator over his health care, had him hospitalized Sunday.
On Thursday, Kasem's younger brother, Mouner, said it breaks his heart to know that Casey Kasem "did not get the care he deserves for the man that he is. It's been really hard seeing him the way he is."

Deejay Casey Kasem in critical condition at Washington state hospital
Reuters) - Radio personality Casey Kasem, who is at the center of a legal battle between family members over his care, was in critical condition at a Washington state hospital with an infected bed sore, a hospital spokesman said.
Kasem, 82, was brought to the emergency room at St Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington, on Sunday suffering from the infection and was admitted that day, hospital spokesman Scott Thompson said in a written statement.
"Mr. Kasem is receiving wound care, intravenous antibiotic therapy, blood pressure support medication as well as treatment for his pain," Thompson said. "Mr. Kasem is alert, appears comfortable at this time."
Thompson said the hospital was releasing details about Kasem's condition to counter what he called "misinformation" that had been published in the media. He did not elaborate on that misinformation.
Danny Deraney, a spokesman for Kasem's three children from his first marriage, said that the deejay's daughters, Kerri and Julie, were at their father's side and that his son, Mike, was en route to Washington.
Kasem, most famous for his weekly top 40 countdown radio show and as the voice of Shaggy on the "Scooby-Doo" cartoons, suffers from Lewy body disease, a form of dementia with symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease and hallucinations.
Kasem's children from a first marriage and his wife, Jean Kasem, have been locked in a legal tussle over his care and visitation rights.
Las week a judge ordered that Kerri Kasem be granted daily visits with the ailing radio personality during that legal battle, which escalated earlier in May when she and her sister filed court papers saying that they didn't know his whereabouts.
Several days later, sheriff's deputies in Kitsap County located him and Jean Kasem there. Further proceedings in the case are scheduled for late June.

This is so heartbreaking.
At the time when this man needs his family the most, they're fighting and making it all about them.
I would say I hope he can make it through this, but I doubt he would have little quality of life if he did.
Just a terrible situation, screw that family.
Godspeed, Casey. <3

Casey Kasem's Daughter Blasts His Wife: 'She Tortured Him'
Casey Kasem's daughter Kerri says her father has suffered torment at the hands of his wife, Jean, and that his health is declining.
"She tortured him," Kerri Kasem tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Among her accusations: putting Ensure into Casey Kasem's feeding tube and not providing him with pain medication he desperately needed.
Casey Kasem is hospitalized in Gig Harbor, Wash., and while St. Joseph's Hospital spokesman Scott Thompson says Mr. Kasem's condition is stable, Kerri Kasem expects the worst, and blames her stepmother Jean, who has battled the family for about a year in court and in the press.
"I only hope that we can put our differences aside so when my dad opens his eyes and takes his last breath we're all there with him," says Kerri Kasem, whowon a legal victory Friday, with her health conservatorship of her father upheld.
Jean Kasem's attorney Joel Paget tells THR, "[Kerri Kasem's] details are mixed with mostly fiction and some facts. Jean provided the best of care for her husband. The action now turns to California," where there will be a hearing Monday on Mr. Kasem's conservatorship. A June 20 court date is also slated.
Kerri Kasem says Jean Kasem misled the public about events to date on what her mother Linda Naylor calls "the Mr. Toad's wild ride that Jean took Casey on." Jean Kasem has described the trip -- which led Kerri Casem to file a missing persons report for her father May 14 – as a family vacation from Los Angeles to Washington State.
But Kerri Kasem says they went to Las Vegas, Arizona, back to Las Vegas, and then to Washington. She says the trip began when Jean Kasem took her father out of Berkley East Hospital in Santa Monica because she and her sister had visited him after not being allowed to see him for five months.
"Jean took him from the place where he was safe, did not have any bedsores or infections, took him to the Vdara Hotel in Las Vegas, took him to Arizona, couldn't find a hideout, went back to Las Vegas, then found a friend who her parents knew back in the '60s in Guam and took him to Washington."
She says during that time, her father developed painful bedsores.
"When they arrived to Washington they had an ambulance take him to the house. The ambulance driver was so worried he called adult protective services on them," says Kerri Kasem.
She goes on to allege her father did "not have medication" and was "being fed through his feeding tube with Ensure." She says he "was in excruciating pain" when he arrived at the hospital in Washington, and that a doctor told her the DJ had a large ulcer and painful muscle contractures.
"My dad was moaning and crying, and for three weeks didn't have any pain medication. She tortured him for two and a half weeks," Kerri Kasem says. "This woman has hastened my father's death."
Kerri Kasem also denies Jean Kasem's accusations that she has borrowed money from Casey Kasem and wants to give his money to Scientology.
"I have studied many religions. She's going for the most controversial one and hoping it sticks," Kerri Kasem says. "I've never asked for money, never filed for the estate, only health care so we could see my dad."
But Kerri Kasem says that if her father does die soon, she intends for the entire family to be there.
"My dad is going to die with dignity and not in pain and with all his family around him, and if that means with Jean and Liberty, that means Jean and Liberty. If they want to be there with all of us they are very welcome. Because I know my dad would want that."

While I wish the best for Casey Kasem, there is another thread here about him. Can a moderator merge the two threads? Thanks.

The court battle is just about over, even if it isn't once he dies who gets health care becomes moot. The intent of this thread is to focus on Casey's impending death. Not necessarily the weird court feud..

So the wife got the health care back yesterday over a disagreement about starting end-of-life measures.
Daughter per consultation with the doctors: He can't process food and water anymore, causes too much pain, doctor recommended end-of-life measures
Wife: "Don't let them kill my husband". Even though he can't speak or move any more, through his eye movement, she can tell that he wants her to handle health care. Kids are so desperate for money they want to speed up the process to collect on the 2 million dollar life insurance policy of which each of the 4 kids (including Liberty) gets an equal share.
Courts: Feeding tube and liquids commence immediately, end-of-life-measures suspended pending an evaluation by a court appointed attorney at the end of the week.
Daughter: He might not make it to Friday.

This is a heartbreaking story that should never have never gone public. But things definitely got crazy and took some weird turns. I hope that he's not suffering.

This is a very unfortunate and tragic situation. IHeart radio is saluting the career of Casey Kasem with random AT40 shows playing 24/7 Not sure if the randomness is permanent or not I don't think it's available in Canada. I have a bunch of old AT40 shows with Casey. I will probably listen to some of them over the next while.

I'll never forget the day my grandfather died. I locked myself in my room and listened to Casey's American Top 20 program as an escape from the whole situation. That weekly show was a big part of my teenage years and what led me to develop an interest in radio and music in the first place.
It's a real shame that his life has to end this way. Feeding tubes and infected bed sores are no way to live; that's not "life" if you ask me. I think we all know the right thing to do is let him out of his misery and let him move on.

The court decided today to resume comfort care. The means food and water have been discontinued. Casey Kasem is surrounded by his first 3 kids, brother and sister in law as well as a close friends. Casey's kids extended a public invitation for Jean and Liberty to join them for Casey's final moments.

Official documentation is now showing that Jean stole equipment from the Los Angeles hospital and ignored warnings from multiple physicians and nurses about how dangerous it would be to take Casey from the hospital. Kerri is also alleging that Jean traveled through several different states with Casey in an attempt to avoid being found before arriving in Washington. I haven't seen any official proof that that part is true yet though. Losing Casey Kasem will suck, and I'll probably make a long post about what AT40 meant to me once he goes. However, assuming that it's true that fluids were filling his lungs, that he couldn't digest food and that he can't communicate in any form, it seems pretty obvious to me that discontinuing food and hydration was the right thing to do. We don't need a repeat of the Terri Schiavo incident, and there's no way in hell that Casey would want that either.

Casey Kasem's Daughter on Her Stepmother: 'I Want This Evil Woman in Jail'
Ailing DJ Casey Kasem's daughter, Kerri Kasem, continued her battle with stepmother Jean Kasem over her father's health care.
"I want this evil woman in jail for what she has done to this family," she said, while her private investigator Logan Clarke explained: "I've been hired to get Jean Kasem arrested," and said that the Santa Monica police "assured me they're going to investigate" her for elder abuse. Police sources had no comment.
PHOTOS Casey Kasem Through the Years
In May, Jean Kasem took Casey Kasem from a Santa Monica hospital to Washington State, where he is now at St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor.
"His doctor said he's dying from sepsis developed at some point since his transition from Santa Monica. Most likely he would've lived a year, a year-and-a-half [in Santa Monica]. Now it's a matter of days, weeks, or hours," alleged Clarke.
Jean Kasem did not reply to emails from The Hollywood Reporter, but in a June 9 court declaration, she wrote, "I have spared no expense to ensure that [Casey] receives state-of-the-art medical treatment and 24 hour-a-day care," noting that on Jan. 14, a judge found that she was providing "excellent" care for her husband. On May 7, LAPD found "no evidence of elder abuse," and on May 14, a Kitsap County, Wash. sheriff's officer "did not have any concerns about Casey's wellbeing [sic]."
"Jean put Casey in an SUV with a Mexican caretaker — no doctor, no nurse — she got in another SUV, and drove in this bizarre caravan," says Clarke. Kerri Kasem says Jean Kasem moved Casey five times to prevent her and her family from visiting him, then fled California when Kerri found him. "The whole Vegas, Nevada, Washington trip was a continuation of evading the daughters," says Clarke. "The guy driving the car is Jean's boyfriend of several years."
STORY Casey Kasem's Daughter Can Withhold Fluids, Food, Medication From Ailing Father, Judge Rules
Kerri Kasem's attorney Amy McEvoy wrote on March 19, "Mrs. Kasem has been lying to Mr. Kasem for at least two years, telling him that they are divorced. What possible motive could Mrs. Kasem have for such cruelty? Perhaps the younger gentleman that is staying at the Malibu house and driving Mr. Kasem's car could answer that question for us."
"She did not give him 24/7 medical care," says Clarke, "Not even close. I have proof. I have doctor notes that repeatedly say, 'Wife keeps saying she is coming to visit Mr. Kasem but never shows up.’ At one hospital they discharged him, and she didn’t even come to pick him up or even call for nine days! The Santa Monica doctor told Jean 'It could be fatal' to remove his feeding tube. It was surgically implanted. She hung up on him."
But Dr. Donald Sharman, who treated Mr. Kasem on May 13, 17, and 24 at the Silverdale, Wash. home to which Jean Kasem took him, observed Mr. Kasem's "steady improvement" under his care, and wrote that "moving Mr. Kasem to the hospital was detrimental to his health." Jean Kasem's attorney Steven Haney says that Kerri Kasem "ordered the hospital to cease all care for Casey, guaranteeing that he will die a slow agonizing death."
STORY Casey Kasem's Wife Lashes Out at His Daughter: 'Everybody is … Watching Her Kill My Husband'
But on June 9, Dr. Juan C. Iregui, a palliative medicine specialist, said it's worse than futile to keep giving Mr. Kasem artificial nutrition and hydration, which increase throat and lung secretions and risk "tube feedings regurgitation [and] suffocation." Added Iregui, "It will at best prolong the dying process for him and add suffering to an already terribly uncomfortable dying process with wounds, contracture, and pain." Iregui recommended Casey be taken to a hospice, "where a patient can experience a natural and comfortable dying process surrounded by his family."
Haney accuses Kerri Kasem of wanting to cash in on her father's death. "Kerri was cut off in 2007 after she accumulated hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans," says Haney. "Casey and Jean's fear is that any money going to the Scientologist kids would end up in the 'Church.' Instead, he gave Kerri and her two siblings and Liberty [Jean and Casey's daughter] a $2,000,000 insurance policy."
"Absolute lies," says Kerri Kasem. "This will be part of my defamation suit. I never took loans from my Dad and he never 'cut me off.' We have an irrevocable trust that was set up 30 years ago. I have never gone a week without either seeing my Dad or talking to him on the phone until Jean blocked me, my brother and my sister Julie."
"The kids did not come around from 2007 when they were cut off," says Haney. "They showed up in 2013 when they heard Casey was dying — a final desperate effort to hook into his $80,000,000 estate. Kerri, along with her Scientologist friends, picketed in front of Jeannie's house, Jeannie received death threats, someone went through their trash." Clarke denies that finding Casey Kasem required trespassing or lawbreaking. "I can find anyone, no matter where they are," says Clarke.
STORY Casey Kasem's Daughter Denies Stepmother's Porn, Scientology Accusations
"All of this conduct is consistent with what the Scientologists do with members who try to escape the restrictions," says Haney.
"If you look at the protest pictures, every single person in that picture is one of Casey's dear friends or a family member," says Kerri Kasem spokesman Danny Deraney. "They were all blocked access to Casey by Jean Kasem. The only way they could see him is at Kerri or Julie's house. Julie, Mike and Kerri saw their dad every week and talked to him on the phone every single day until she ripped his phone out of the room. Jean would fire any caretaker if they allowed him to talk to his children."
On June 9, Jean Kasem accused Kerri Kasem of wanting "to somehow capture her lost inheritance," and demanded "an immediate and thorough investigation" of her stepdaughter's efforts.
In a series of Mar. 4 emails submitted to the court, Kerri's sister Julie Kasem told Jean Kasem, "I feel so sad for dad that his wishes to see his children are being denied." Jean Kasem, angry because Julie Kasem did not tell her how she found out where Casey was, replied, "I'm just protecting him like I once protected you."

Following months of legal family wrangling over his care and access to seeing him, ALL ACCESS is deeply saddened to report that the legendary CASEY KASEM, who was literally the voice of a generation as host and co-creator of the AMERICAN TOP 40 syndicated radio show, has died on FATHER's DAY (6/15) at age 82 after complications from Lewy Body Dementia, a degenerative condition similar to Parkinson's Disease. KERRI KASEM @kerrikasem Tweeted the sad news: "Early this Father’s Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends. Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken. Thank you for all your love, support and prayers. The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our Dad. With love, Kerri, Mike and Julie." All the message boards I read are on top of this thing. Has not hit mainstream media yet but Mike and Kerri Kasem Facebook and Twitter pages have posted the above message.
Whether you grew up after the Casey Kasem AT40 era or during or before, Casey Kasem is either directly or indirectly the reason we are all here on message boards such as this obsessing over chart position. The first national countdown show came from Casey Kasem and Don Bustany back in 1970 and popularized top 40 radio
For the Kasem family unfortunately, the fighting is not over, I have been reading that wrangling over control of his body is next

ah...here it is abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/casey-kasem-dead-82/story?id=24016102Casey Kasem has died. ABC News confirmed that the radio personality died today in a California hospital. He was 82. Born Kemal Amin Kasem in Detroit, the disc jockey began his career in nearby Flint before becoming an announcer on Armed Forces Radio Korea Network in 1952. Upon his return, he went on to work at radio stations in California, Ohio and New York before launching "American Top 40" in 1970. He hosted that show until 1988, and then a revived version from 1998 until 2004, when Ryan Seacrest took over. From 1988 until 1998, Kasem hosted a show called "Casey's Top 40." "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars," was how he ended every program. "I just didn't want to say goodbye. Every station I was at, I never said goodbye," he later explained to the New York Times of his famous sign-off. "I don't know why." Kasem, who was married twice and has four children, also had a colorful TV career, which included doing the voice for Shaggy on "Scooby-Doo" as well as voice-overs for many commercials. A devout vegan, he supported animal rights and environmental causes, as well as political organizations that spoke to him. Originally of Lebanese origin, Kasem felt it was important to improve Arab-Jewish relations. In recent years, the radio personality's health declined and in 2013, his daughter Kerri said he was suffering from a form of dementia. Around that time, his three oldest children and brother launched a claim that his wife Jean was not letting them see their father. A court denied a petition his daughter Julie launched to take care of her father in October 2013, but just last month, Kerri was granted conservatorship amid a battle with Kasem's second wife, her stepmother, Jean.

In my life (so far) It's rare that a man (that I DON'T know personally) could enter my life through the radio & leave such a LASTING impression that from now & all of time, I will truly call him friend!
Casey was & will ALWAYS be that to me. By his legions of fans I know I'm not alone in feeling that way. It's a very sad day indeed but, know that the truly great ones live on in your heart, mind, soul & the very SAME place you first met...the radio.
For me Casey will always be here saying "Until next week when once again We'll countdown the 40 biggest hits on the Pop Chart...
I'll be waiting next week & EVERY week that follows. Casey Kasem "a forever friend"
