The other day my dad and I were talking about how godawful this song was. I'm glad we can see eye to eye on a few things.

Holy crap, -542 on Alternative :o
9 14 WEEZER Back To The Shack 1096 1638 -542 3.887
I think it's clear payola had a big influence on this.

It's the biggest spin loss I've ever seen that wasn't the result of an attack on the United States.
I didn't dislike the song as much as some do here, but it was still an entitlement-type hit, and they really could have pulled the plug on it a month or two ago. If they had, then "I'm Only Joking" and "Trainwreck 1979" could claim not only to be two of the coolest tracks of the year, but top 10 hits at that.

This and the Priory song got annihilated on their descents. I'm not sure how well the second Weezer single is going to do if radio is willing to drop this one so quickly.

I've seen recurrents lose a ton of spins like that (Pumped Up Kicks after the Connecticut school shooting), but what currents has that happened to? "Bleed American" by Jimmy Eat World after 9/11 maybe?

Payola may very well be a factor. But it's also possible that listeners bought into the buzz at first, but quickly realized how much of a throwaway novelty this song is. It did have strong Rate The Music scores out of the gate - in fact, the scores are still pretty good, but I'm guessing that didn't line up with what average listeners wanted to hear.

"Bleed American" by Jimmy Eat World after 9/11 maybe? "Bodies" by Drowning Pool had a -996 (1570 plays to 574) and fell from 11-37 the week after 9/11 on a survey that no longer exists called The Gavin Report, a similar music chart that had about 77 reporting stations, similar spin totals for #1, though #50 back then had over 400 plays. I wish I knew the R&R/Mediabase slaughter totals for it but I can only assume they were similar. Other songs taking a hit from that event: System of a Down - "Chop Suey!" (16-17 & -31, but recovered) Saliva - "Click Click Boom" (23-27 & -292) Jimmy Eat World - "Bleed American" (20-24 & -288) Bad Ronald - "Let's Begin (Shoot The Sh**)" (49-50 & -14; never had much going for it to begin with, but was finished after that, and so was the band.)

"Bodies" doesn't surprise me at all. It seems like that song is often affiliated with controversy, as I remember when that congresswomen or w/e political position she was in Arizona was shot during a public speech the song was affiliated with that too.

I'd hope the second single could do at least Top 20, since if I recall, 311's "Hey You" also had a massive spin bleed (pretty sure it never had a -500 though), yet "It's Alright" still reached around #16 (albeit with little longevity).

Best case scenario the 2nd single performs in line with "Best Friend" by Foster the People. Though hopefully it flops and Weezer can retire.
