Her legacy is going to be forever archived at Dollywood. Is Dollywood unique or could another music star build something similar? Dolly Parton is now worth about half a billion dollars, almost as much as Madonna. She owns all her music, has restaurants and various other businesses, but her crown jewel is Dollywood. Her amusement park started out as a passion project for Dolly that was seen as a gamble. Every year it gets bigger and bigger, this year they are building a 300 room resort for Dollywood. The resort, like all of Dollywood, is themed after her music and the public's perception of "Dolly Parton." Check out the video for the resort featuring her music:

Michael did it with Neverland Ranch, kinda, so it isn't a concept that exclusive to Dolly Parton. Although Michael's was a bit more infamous for... obvious reasons, and didn't last.
To act like Dollywood will be what cements her legacy is rather shortsighted though? It's going to be about her music. Even the park itself is built on that. It's not like it's truly that successful or a marvel of the world outside of the southeastern US either.

I said outside of the southeastern US. Unless she's opened a branch for her adoring fans in the Democratic Republic of Congo I haven't heard about.
$300 million dollar expansion funded by overpriced fried turkey legs or not, people give as much of a s**t about Dollywood as they do VEVO records.

Artists often try different avenues of business to add to their brand. Dollywood is an unusual case. I don't think it could really be duplicated as it exists within a unique set of circumstances. It has all the history and legacy associated with it, and of course Dolly herself. I could see someone with lots of money doing something on that scale, but probably not the same thing. Beyonce, Dr. Dre, Jay Z, and Kanye West are the only ones I could really see doing something like that.

I disagreed with you that Dollywood was that successful (in the sense that it doesn't have a truly massive impact outside of a certain region of the US) or that her legacy will be archived there-- whatever the hell that's even supposed to mean. You then yelled at me for stating a contrary opinion to yours in a subforum called "Your Opinion Please?", yet I am the one who is pressed and ruining this thread. Glory be to God, I have seen the light. I apologize if the fact that I have a different opinion on the matter of f**king Dollywood is upsetting to you, but instead of getting catty with me, you're better off going back to YouTube and doing whatever it is you do there.

"Dollywood - Is it unique"
- As Kunt pointed out, Michael already did the amusement park thing. Meanwhile, other stars have had public attractions made for their legacy (Elvis and Graceland being the very first to come to mind). So separately, the elements of Dollywood aren't really unique, it's just the combination of 'amusement park' and 'open to public' that make Dollywood different.
"or could another music star do it?"
- Like I said, Dolly is not the first person to have a public attraction based on her name or legacy, so it's not a stretch to say that another music star could do it, depending on who that star is. If Graceland added on a park it would be huge. The Hive is ride or die - they would not only support a Bey amusement park, they'd probably build it for her and shoot anyone who dared to say it wasn't the best park of all time. Mariah is quirky enough to make it work, though her park would probably be filled with less roller coasters and more variations on Ferris wheels, unicorn carousels, houses of mirrors that only reflect your good side, and glitter dunking booths. Gaga's star is on the wane but you know what, I would go to a Gaga amusement park just based on her name. I bet that would be one interesting park.
Shakira could pull it off in Colombia, I'm sure.

The closest anyone in country music that did what Dolly Parton did was Conway Twitty. He opened Music Village U.S.A. (a.k.a. Twitty City). It was a ten acre parcel of land that housed him and his family. It was lavishly decorated during Christmas. It was opened in 1982 and sold to Trinity Broadcasting in 1994 following Twitty's death in 1993. I know it isn't an amusement park like Dollywood.

Gaga's star is on the wane but you know what, I would go to a Gaga amusement park just based on her name. I bet that would be one interesting park. Shakira could pull it off in Colombia, I'm sure. Great post, its an actual discussion on the topic. The size of Dollywood is unique among the music world. Few music stars have ever done something that big, if any. Neverland, Graceland and Celine's water park are all tiny next to Dollywood. Comparing Neverland to Dollywood is like comparing a tiny fair to Disneyland. MJ's Neverland was his private theme park in his backyard. Similar, yet on a much smaller scale. Neverland would be more similar to Celine's water park that she has in her backyard in Florida. Dollywood also has a water park. The big difference is that these were built for their own pleasure in their backyards. Dollywood is a real theme park that’s open to the public and its a money making machine. In that regard, its unique. Graceland would be a tad similar too, but also, much smaller. The reason I started this thread is because I love the idea behind Dollywood. I'd love for other legends to try something similar. It's a place where fans can marinate in their favorite artists memorabilia. The biggest problem would be – who has a personality that's unique enough to design a theme park based on it? I liked several of your suggestions, but which one would truly work? Mariah Carey certainly has a unique persona. But, a Mariah theme park wouldn't appeal to the general public. It would have a limited audience due to all the unicorns, rainbows and hearts that would be present throughout the theme park. Lady Gaga is the one that would be perfect for this. She'd probably have so much fun designing the theme park that she'd record custom sounds and music for the rides. At the center could be a museum that archived all her costumes and awards. But, even though she could, she won't because she likely will never reach the level of success that's necessary to justify such a huge project. The only ones that have the money to do something like this would be Celine Dion or Beyonce/JayZ. But, are their personas unique enough to justify building a theme park that's based on them? Not really. Shakira could build something similar in Colombia (or UAE), as you mentioned, but I doubt she'd want to. She's focused on building schools. She'd see a theme park as a distraction. Dubai has the money to help back something of this scale, the fact that she's the most popular artist in the Middle East, half Arabic, and that's she's known for her belly dancing, could justify some type of Shakira project in UAE in the distant future. Whatever the project could be, it would be much cheaper to build in UAE than in the US. The Jackson's could try to recreate Neverland somewhere else on a much bigger scale, that could work. An MJ casino in Vegas would be something that could work. The Casino could have a mini theme park that's modeled after Neverland and the casino could be the permanent home for MJ's Cirque du Soleil show. To put things into perspective, as big as that would be, Dollywood would still be bigger. Celine's water park hasn't gotten as much attention as Neverland. For those of you that haven't seen it yet, here's a pic of it: Neverland: Here's a map of Dollywood. The theme park and the waterpark, so people get an idea of how big it is:

I don't think the concept is unique, and other celebrities have tried similar ventures before.
It does speak volumes about Dolly as a person and businesswoman, though.
Not a lot of artists (particularly in Country music), can say they've been offered (or been successful) with an opportunity like this.

Not that it really matters, but Parton became co-owner of the amusement park in 1986, at which time it was renamed Dollywood. MJ purchased Neverland in 1988.
In any event, it's part of her empire, and a very lucrative one, at that.

At the time it was small, since she bought it they turned it into a Dolly themed park and its more than doubled in size. She also bought more expensive rides once the park started to bring in money. She says that once the park started to make money that she fired everyone that told her it was a bad idea. She's a smart lady. Once she started to make money from her music, instead of going around buying expensive things, she bought the full rights to all her early recordings.

Dolly Parton was quoted by saying that when she gets older, she wanted her songs to support her. I think she was right about that one. Elvis Presley wanted credit of I Will Always Love You if Parton were to sell it to him. She said no. Smart move.
