This seems like it's been around forever, and I've moved on from the song, but that doesn't change the fact that this song is still great and I really hope it goes top 5 at least!!! It already is top 5, and will probably be #1 in about 3 weeks.

This song has really gotten me thinking about the bro-country movement and the different responses it has received. I find it interesting that there appear to be four schools of thought into which anyone who has any sort of opinion about bro-country can be classified.
Anti-bro country 1. Feminist wing - These people are primarily against bro-country due to the lyrics that objectify women and glorify partying, sex, alcohol, drugs, etc. These people wouldn't mind pop country if the lyrics were less offensive. Examples include most critics, a lot of the older female artists, the people who write editorials for BCU, The Tennessean, and most of the people whose anti-bro country comments I have read on this board. 2. Traditionalist wing - These people are primarily against bro country due to the generally modern, pop sound of the music. These people wouldn't mind bro country so much if a fiddle or banjo were audible. Examples include the suits behind the CMA and ACM award shows, Saving Country Music, Country Perspective, Farce the Music, and other non-professional critics, as well as possibly a lot of the older male artists (although while older artists like Toby Keith and Trace Adkins have had their share of traditional party songs, I do think George Strait or Alan Jackson would also raise some eyebrows at some of the lyrics of these songs).
Pro-bro country 3. Party wing - These people are primarily looking for fun, lively, upbeat music that they can "jam out" to. They probably have mostly harmless intentions and are really just looking for music that will be popular with listeners and draw in new fans from larger audiences. This faction probably encompasses most people who support bro-country, including Country Aircheck, country radio, CMT, most bro-country singers and songwriters, and most fans. 4. Small town pride wing - See Brantley Gilbert and Justin Moore fan bases. These people probably carried over from the generation of songs about small-town pride. A lot of these shamelessly "crude" country songs probably motivate them to fly a rebel flag down the streets of a large city. (I have actually seen comments on Brantley Gilbert videos seriously supporting this idea.)
Anyway, this list was in no way meant to offend or stereotype anyone. I just thought it was interesting that just about every comment I read can probably fit into one of these quadrants.
Regarding Maddie & Tae more specifically, I have checked out their EP and no song quite struck me as super radio-friendly like "Girl in a Country Song." I guess "Your Side of Town" could be a single although I think it'd be wisest for Dot to release a new song next (which they'll probably end up doing).

With me, lyrics are the main issue. Everything is the same... I don't mind a little bro country, but with everyone doing it at the same time... It's annoying and overdone

I saw them in concert last night, and they sound FANTASTIC live. They're very personable, too. They sang Sierra and Fly, in addition to GIACS, so I wonder if one of those is being looked at as their next single.

I'm not sure where else to post this, so I guess it can be here. The song is fantastic and I wish the best for this duo to be around for a very long time. It's a breath of fresh air in a genre that really needs it.
To the point of the post though, I've been driving a lot recently and I have six stations programmed in my car. Don't judge me on these, but it will all make sense in a minute:
XM 58 (The Highway - today's country) XM 57 (Y2Kountry - country songs from 2000-2009) XM 56 (Prime Country - country songs mostly 1989-1999 with some a little earlier) XM 15 (The Pulse - Hot AC) XM 9 (90's pop) XM 83 (ESPN Sports Radio)
It's a good mix for me as it hits country music when I was growing up, some lighter pop today (which might as well be current country), and pop music from 20 years ago. I usually just jump between the three country stations between songs and I started to notice something on The Highway. I wasn't hearing a female being played. Country music has obviously skewed away from the female singer recently, but how far? Plus, with me changing the channel I was probably just missing out on a song here and there, but exactly what were the numbers? So I listened, and listened, and listened. Cole Swindell began to guest host for one of their promotions. So i listened and listened and listened. I listened literally for FOUR HOURS until Day Drinking came on. I guess that counts, so I listened longer. THREE HOURS later Jana Kramer came on for a song.
That's ridiculous, and that's coming from someone who prefers male artists only because it's easier to sing to. But you know what isn't fair? Having perhaps the most popular and influential country station in the world playing two songs by female leads in 7 hours. That bias is out there and it's REAL. It's time to really turn the page on what The Highway is playing, which is generic up and coming male artists who sound mostly the same about the same or similar topics. It's amazing how it's able to stand up as a thing in this day and age.

^ I've always noticed that The Highway barely plays female artists. The only one's in current rotation I can think of is "Maddie & Tae's "Girl In A Country Song", Carrie's "Something In The Water", and Clare Dunn's "Cowboy Side Of You". I've been home bound the past few days because of the serious lake affect storm hammering the Buffalo area so I haven't listened to The Highways for a while. I don't know how often they spin "God Made Girls" or "Love Me Like You Mean It" but I know they've never played "Love" by Jana Kramer, though "Why Ya Wanna" they still play once in a while.
It's gotten to the point where I'm at a loss for words. I mean it makes some sense if you look at the MB and Billboard charts - there's very few to choose from. But my God it's shameful that its gotten to this point.

"Somethin' Bad" isn't charting anymore so that one I ignored. The Sara song is actually the duet version with Will Chase. And that Haley & Michaels remake (which is not a must listen IMO) is only played as a highway find song, which means it get spun not too many times. Plus Haley & Michaels is a guy/girl duo. The fact that we have fingers to spare on our hands after counting these up is unfortunate.

The novelty of this song seems to be wearing off with listeners. "Girl in a Country Song" is down in the 120's on iTunes despite being #2 in airplay. I still think Maddie & Tae will manage a Billboard #1 single here but their song won't be Gold for still some time and I don't see this having much staying power at radio. Maddie & Tae will join Sam Hunt as the only two acts this year to achieve a debut #1 on Billboard, although Sam Hunt's "Leave the Night On" was in the top 50 on iTunes when it peaked and newcomer Cole Swindell couldn't get his debut single to #1 on Billboard even though he was on the cusp of top 20 the week the song peaked. This might have something to do with Maddie & Tae's album not being out yet, of course. Dot sure better have another big hit in store for these girls or they could end up making less money off an album released in spring 2015 with a single not doing as much than they would have with a #2 single right around the holiday season.

It only fell when the EP came out, and now there are 2 versions (they're basically the same; the EP version is 4 seconds longer) charting on iTunes. The "single" version is at #21 on iTunes country right now, and the EP version is at #65. GIACS will probably pass the Gold mark by Christmas or the end of the year at the latest (it's at about 410k right now). I share your concerns about the album not being out yet, but I'm assuming that's because the girls didn't have it ready yet, not because BMLG/Dot was always planning to hold it off until scoring a 2nd big hit. The 2nd single will definitely be critical to their chances of success, but I think these girls are developing a rapidly-growing fan-base, and I think radio really likes them as well.

Has it not already been certified gold? I'm pretty sure I remember seeing on their FB page that it had been.

This is Gold. I was going by the "old" definition of Gold that just meant 500,000 copies sold digitally, but the new qualifications factor in streams and sales, so "Girl in a Country Song" has been certified Gold even though it's only sold 390,000 on iTunes as of November 19.

I hope YSOT isnt the next single. It is just so boring and unoriginal. A boy bashing tempo just like "trouble" which is dying in the 40s.
If it is attitude they want they should release "boomerang".

Blah, I hope they go with After The Storm Blows Through. I don't know why they'd go with something that's not currently on their EP, with no clues as to when their full album will be released. I was kinda hoping they'd go with Sierra, but Your Side of Town sounds more radio friendly. They've definitely got stronger material in their arsenal, but I think it would be wise to play it safe and establish Maddie & Tae more before putting something like After The Storm Blows Through out. A LOT of people are already not taking them that seriously due to GIACS, so putting something that's accessible like YSOT should help a bit in that regard.

If they're going with something else off the EP for single #2, then "Your Side of Town" is the best option. I don't think "Sierra" or "Fly" would be particularly wise choices for radio.

I'm hoping they do something similar to what Meghan Trainor has done, and release a second single from an album that's not on their EP, and have the album ready to go for when the second single is entering the top 20.

A few weeks ago, they tweeted that their album would be out in the Spring. First, welcome to Pulse Music Board, brian69. Second, the timing would be perfect for Maddie & Tae to release their second single in January once Girl In A Country Song hits #1 in December.

I created the account the other night, so I could clarify that GIACS had already gone gold. Obviously, someone beat me to it. I was also wondering if the Spring album release might set up nicely for a January single from the album.

I have not been more excited about a song hitting #1 in the longest time. I am so happy this became the hit it deserved to be and for a new female act to take off at radio. I hope M&T can keep up the success with their 2nd single and full-length album next spring!
