www.billboard.com/articles/news/6143254/frozen-pharrell-williams-lead-mid-year-soundscan-charts-2014'Frozen,' Pharrell Williams Lead Mid-Year SoundScan ChartsBy Keith Caulfield | July 02, 2014 3:59 PM EDT Beyonce, Katy Perry also have big showings at 2014's half-way point. With the year half over, the soundtrack to Disney's "Frozen" and Pharrell Williams' "Happy" lead as the year's biggest-selling album and digital song in the U.S., respectively, selling 2.7 million and 5.6 million according to Nielsen SoundScan. Through the sales week that ended on June 29, the mid-way point of SoundScan's tracking year, "Frozen" is the only album to have sold more than a million copies. The next biggest seller is Beyonce's self-titled set, with 702,000. A year ago at this point, the top-selling album was Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience," with 2.04 million. 2014 is only the third year -- and third in a row -- in SoundScan's history (dating back to 1991), where only one album has sold more than a million at the year's mid-way point. The last time a soundtrack led the mid-year album sales chart was in 2006, when another Disney album, "High School Musical," had sold 2.6 million. It ended up as that year's top-selling album, with 3.7 million. Since 2011, the album that led in sales at the mid-way point ultimately finished as the year's top seller. Adele's "21" was tops in both 2011 and 2012, while Timberlake's "20/20" closed out 2013 as the year's best. So, there's a pretty decent chance that "Frozen" -- especially considering its wide lead over all other albums -- will complete 2014 as the year's biggest album. ("Frozen's" cumulative sales have also jumped past the 3 million mark, as its total sum, through the week ending June 29, rose to 3.03 million. The album was released in November of 2013.) So far in 2014, just five albums have sold at least 500,000 copies. A year ago at this point, there were 11. Eleven of 2014's top-selling albums were released this year, while another seven dropped in 2013. Two sets among the top 20 were issued in 2012: Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" and Florida Georgia Line's "Here's to the Good Times." Eric Church's "The Outsiders" is the year's third largest selling album, with 642,000 sold. It also tops the mid-year country albums list. It became his second No. 1 on the weekly Billboard 200 chart when it debuted atop the tally earlier this year, selling 288,000 in its first week. It followed his first No. 1, 2011's "Chief." Lorde's "Pure Heroine" is No. 4 on the mid-year chart, with 641,000 sold. To date, the set has shifted 1.33 million since its release in September of 2013. The album has never left the weekly top 40 chart on the Billboard 200 in its so-far 38 weeks on the list. It debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the chart dated Oct. 19, 2013. Coldplay's recent release, "Ghost Stories," rounds out the top five sellers, with 589,000 sold. It's also the year's top-selling rock set. Notably, there are no independently-distributed albums among the year's top 10 (or even top 20) sellers. A year ago at this point, there were three indie sets in the top 10: Mumford & Sons' "Babel," the Lumineers' self-titled album and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "The Heist." That, however, was a huge jump from the year previous, where no indie sets were among the mid-year best-seller chart in 2012. Animated hits rule both the mid-year albums and digital songs sales charts, as Pharrell's "Happy" (from "Despicable Me 2") is 2014's top-selling song so far. The Academy Award-nominated tune has shifted 5.6 million downloads this year. It's the only song that has sold more than 5 million. One more cut has eclipsed the 4 million mark: Katy Perry's "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, with 4 million even. "Happy" is only the fourth song to have reached the 5 million mark in a calendar year's first six months. Last year, one song did it (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop"), while in 2012, both Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know," featuring Kimbra, and fun.'s "We Are Young," featuring Janelle Monae, managed the feat. In total, 12 songs have sold at least 2 million downloads this year (versus 13 last year), while 38 have sold a million (down from 51 a year ago). Two acts have both a top 10 selling song and album this year: Pharrell Williams and Katy Perry. (Though, an honorable mention should go to Idina Menzel, who sees her "Frozen" soundtrack song "Let It Go" rank as the year's fifth biggest seller.) In 2013, there were six shared acts, while in 2012, there were two. Both digital song sales and album sales volume are down, year-to-date. 120.9 million albums have been sold in 2014 -- down 15 percent versus the 142 million sold a year ago. In terms of digital song sales, 593.6 million have been sold, down 13 percent compared to the 682.2 million last year at the mid-way point.

It ain't even close for No. 1 album of the year thus far. And "Happy" has a strong lead, as well.

^I'm doubtful about The Black Keys now.
13 albums sold 1 million copies or more in 2013.
They way album sales are right now, we should see a decrease for 2014.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-extra-12-facts-about-the-first-six-months-235342239.htmlChart Watch Extra: 12 Facts About The First Six Months in MusicBy Paul Grein, Yahoo! Chart Watch The biggest hits did extremely well in the first half of 2014. Pharrell Williams's “Happy” sold more copies in the first six months (5,633,000) than any other song in digital history. The Frozen soundtrack sold 2,696,000 copies in the first six months, more than last year’s best-selling album, Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience, sold in the entire year (2,427,000). But below the highest level, music sales were down. Both digital song sales and album sales were down by double digits in the first half of 2014, compared to the same period last year. Album sales were down by 15%. Digital songs were down by 13%. Here are 12 facts about the first six months in popular music, drawn from Nielsen SoundScan sales data. 1. In the last eight years, only one album has sold more copies in the first half of the year than Frozen just did. That was Adele's 21, which sold 3,668,000 copies in the first half of 2012. (That was its second year of release, and included its post-Grammys sales surge. 21 sold 2,517,000 copies in the first six months of 2011, its first year of release.) 2. Frozen sold more copies in the first half than the next four best-selling albums from that period combined. They were: Beyonce's Beyonce (702K), Eric Church's The Outsiders (642K), Lorde's Pure Heroine (641K) and Coldplay's Ghost Stories (589K). Those five albums were the only albums that sold 500K or more copies in the first half. That constitutes a new low for the Nielsen SoundScan era. The previous low was 11, which was reached two years ago. (There was a mini-rebound last year, when 15 albums sold 500K or more copies in the first half.) 3. This marks the fourth year in a row that the best-selling song of the first six months sold more than the champ from the same period in the previous year. Here’s the progression: Train’s "Hey, Soul Sister" sold 3,319,000 copies in the first half of 2010. "E.T." by Katy Perry featuring Kanye West sold 4,120,000 copies in the first half of 2011. “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye featuring Kimbra sold 5,501,000 copies in the first half of 2012. “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz sold 5,558,000 copies in the first half of 2013. 4. But overall, song statistics were down. Four songs sold 3M or more copies in the first half, down from seven in the same period last year. Twelve sold 2M or more, down from 13. Thirty-eight sold 1M or more, down from 51. The rest of the top five songs were: #2, “Dark Horse” by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J (4,004,000); #3, John Legend's “All Of Me” (3,854,000); #4, “Talk Dirty” by Jason Derulo featuring 2 Chainz (3,657,000); and #5, Idina Menzel's Let It Go” (2,854,000). 5. Movie music did extremely well in the first half. Movie music accounted for both the #1 album and the #1 song (and two songs in the top five) for the first half of the year. Williams wrote the Oscar-nominated “Happy” for Despicable Me 2. The Oscar-winning “Let It Go,” of course, originated in Frozen. 6. Frozen is the third soundtrack from a theatrically-released movie in the Nielsen SoundScan era to wind up as the #1 album of the first six months. Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard was the best-seller for the first half of 1993. Titanic was the best-seller for the first half of 1998. In addition, the soundtrack to The Disney Channel’s High School Musical was the best-seller for the first half of 2006. (All three of these soundtracks went on to be the #1 album for the entire year.) 7. Iggy Azalea is the only artist with two songs that each sold 2M or more copies in the first half. The Aussie female rapper’s “Fancy” (featuring Charli XCX) sold 2,533,000 copies in the first half, to finish #7. Ariana Grande's “Problem,” on which she is featured, sold 2,163,000, to finish #11. Five other artists had two songs that each topped 1 million sales in the first half: Katy Perry (“Dark Horse” and “Roar”), Jason Derulo (“Talk Dirty” and “Wiggle”), Lorde (“Team” and “Royals”), Imagine Dragons (“Radioactive” and “Demons”), and Luke Bryan (“Play It Again” and Florida Georgia Line's “This Is How We Roll,” on which he was featured). 8. Twelve songs sold 2M or more copies in the first six months. I’ve already given you the top five and the two Azalea hits. Here are the five others. #6, “Turn Down For What” by DJ Snake & Lil Jon (2,573,000); #8, Bastille's “Pompeii” (2,321,000); #9, Aloe Blacc’s “The Man” (2,263,000); #10, “Timber” by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha (2,189,000); #12, “Say Something” by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera (2,110,000). 9. For the first time, two Now compilations ranked among the top 10 albums of the first half. Now 49 was #6 (482K). Now 50 was #9 (452K). As album sales decline, old, dependable franchises like Now and Grammy Nominees (the latest installment finished #19 for the first half) gain ground. Here are the other albums that ranked from #6 to #12 for the first half. #7, Luke Bryan's Crash My Party (455K); #8, Katy Perry's Prism (453K); #10, Pharrell Williams' GIRL (452K); #11, Imagine Dragons's Night Visions (424K); #12, Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (419K). 10. Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams are the only artists with both an album and a single in the mid-year top 10. (Honorable mention goes to Idina Menzel, who performs two songs on the Frozen soundtrack—one in tandem with Kristen Bell.) 11. Eric Church’s The Outsiders was the top-selling album that was released in 2014. Frozen and Beyonce were both released in the waning weeks of 2013. Only five of the top 12 albums of the first half were released in 2014. (The others are Coldplay's Ghost Stories, the two Now volumes andPharrell Williams's GIRL.) Six of the 12 albums were released in 2013. One (the Imagine Dragons's inexhaustible album) was released in 2012. 12. Mid-year champs invariably rank high on the year-end charts. In 14 of the past 21 years, the best-selling album for the first six months wound up as the best-seller for the entire year. In every year since 1993, the best-seller for the first six months wound up in the year-end top five. P.S. If you’re surprised at how weak album sales are these days, don’t even ask about music videos. Just two music videos sold 50K or more copies in the first half: Metallica's Metallica: Through The Never (82K) and P!nk's The Truth About Love Tour: Live From Melbourne (52K).

Can these albums sell 1 million by the end of 2014? 2 Beyonce "Beyonce" 702,000 3 Eric Church "The Outsiders" 642,000 4 Lorde "Pure Heroine" 641,000 5 Coldplay "Ghost Stories" 589,000 13 Brantley Gilbert "Just As I Am" 412,000 18 The Black Keys "Turn Blue" 328,000 20 Miranda Lambert "Platinum" 305,000 Are any of them selling well at all in current weeks? Erich Church could/should get there as he's likely to have another single or two and exposure via the CMAs in November. I can't really see anyone else getting there, tbh. Weekly sales are just too low.

Frozen has a 2 million copy lead over #2. When was the last time #1 had such a huge lead? I'm assuming Adele, both times.

^^I chose the ones above because they will have future singles out in the next 6 months. Plus any extra Christmas sales...
But, you are right about the low weekly sales.
That will hurt Beyonce (#82 last week). Lorde's Tennis Court has not blown up.
Lets see:
Miranda sold 29k this week. Maybe
Brantley sold 21k. Maybe
Coldplay sold 18k. Maybe
Black Beys sold 10k. No
Eric Church sold 7k. No

Wow at some 2012 albums (Imagine Dragons, Florida Georgia Line, Bruno Mars). Making it in the top 20 mid year chart.

My End Of Year Album Prediction
1. Frozen Cast "Frozen" 3,056,912 2. Adele "25" 1,243,483 3. Taylor Swift "Album 5" 980,236 4. Coldplay "Ghost Stories" 950,462 5. Maroon 5 "V" 886,930 6. Beyonce "Beyonce" 902,456 7. 5 Seconds Of Summer "5 Seconds Of Summer" 868,450 8. Eric Church "The Outsiders" 856,943 9. Ed Sheeran "X" 808,768 10. Ariana Grande "My Everything" 802,852
Right below the top 10
11. Lorde "Pure Heroine" 796,418 12. Sam Smith "In The Lonely Hour" 780,212
Oh, and Madonna's new album is going to flop again (like the last 2 did).
WTF at all of the 5's this year, 2015 is next year.
Also, there's 5 5's :O

I don't get where they get off classifying that and Waka Waka as Latin songs. Also, they classify Born To Die as a rock album, but not Ultraviolence? And Team is a rock song? Ok...

I don't get where they get off classifying that and Waka Waka as Latin songs. Also, they classify Born To Die as a rock album, but not Ultraviolence? And Team is a rock song? Ok... Hips Don't Lie likely qualifies because it had a Spanish version (called Será Será), and the reason it's still doing well may have to do with the World Cup. It was the opening song for the 2006 ceremony and is getting sales along with Waka Waka (Which has a Spanish version under the subtitle Esto Es África and was the opening song of 2010's World Cup) on nostalgic basis. A song is classified Rock if Rock stations are adding it or its getting streams on online radio geared to rock. Though I do agree Team has basically no elements of rock music, this was the situation it was in. Meanwhile, only "West Coast" got adds in rock airplay that resulted in a charting, and I think the overall album doesn't get classified as such unless a majority of singles go to one genre? I'm honestly not sure in this case.

Wow at some 2012 albums (Imagine Dragons, Florida Georgia Line, Bruno Mars). Making it in the top 20 mid year chart. Amazing. Some 2013 albums have already ended promotion such as Eminem and Lady GaGa.

^After Christmas, the box set's sales fell hard. It has only sold 115,000 in 2014. I was looking at my thread Billboard Top Country Albums and Singles and this is what I have about the Garth Brooks box set: January 11, 2014: Blame It All On My Roots-Garth Brooks-Pearl-90,000 You mean it only sold another 25,000 copies since January?
