I was initially questioning Weird Al's strategy of releasing no music until the day before album release, but if he's looking at an 80k+ debut, what do I know? Impressive, and the tactic of releasing videos through diverse digital platforms was a smart move.

My Facebook and Twitter has been flooded with Weird Al links and posts this week. Definitely more than his last album. As I said as a reply to one of them, I think with 80s and 90s pop culture and nostalgia back in full force right now, the timing couldn't be better for Weird Al to strike.

www.billboard.com/articles/news/6165950/weird-al-mandatory-fun-billboard-200'Weird Al' Yankovic Aiming for First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 ChartBy Keith Caulfield | July 18, 2014 7:54 PM EDT Though, Jason Mraz is nipping at Al's heels with 'Yes!' Comedian and singer "Weird Al" Yankovic is on course for his first No. 1 album, as "Mandatory Fun" could debut atop the Billboard 200 chart next week. Industry forecasters suggest the album, which was released on July 15, might sell over 80,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, July 20. That would also snare Yankovic his best sales week since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991. The Billboard 200's new top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, July 23. As of Friday, the sales projection for "Mandatory Fun" was just ahead of another new album in the race for No. 1: Jason Mraz's "Yes!" The latter set might sell around 75,000 to 80,000. Mraz is also in the hunt for his first No. 1 album. Mraz has previously topped out at No. 2 with his last album, 2012's "Love Is a Four Letter Word." In total, he's collected three top 10 sets. As for Yankovic, he's claimed two top 10 efforts, though his chart history stretches back much farther than Mraz's. Yankovic arrived on the Billboard 200 back in May 1983 with his self-titled album, containing his first Billboard Hot 100 hit, "Ricky" (a spoof of Toni Basil's No. 1 "Mickey"). Mraz, meanwhile, made his Billboard 200 debut 20 years later with "Waiting for My Rocket to Come." Yankovic's highest-charting album so far is his previous set, 2011's "Alpocalypse," which debuted and peaked at No. 9. Also set for sizable debuts on next week's Billboard 200: Rise Against's "The Black Market" (around 60,000), the new "Kidz Bop 26" album (50,000), Bleachers' "Strange Desire" (18,000) and Marsha Ambrosius' "Friends & Lovers" (15,000). On SoundScan's Building chart (below), Mraz and Yankovic are Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking β reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants. Rise Against is No. 3, followed by the Kidz Bop Kids at No. 4 and Sam Smith's "In the Lonely Hour" at No. 5. The "Frozen" soundtrack is No. 6, with Ed Sheeran's "x" and Bleachers at Nos. 7 and 8, respectively. Closing out the Building Chart's top 10 are Trey Songz's "Trigga" at No. 9 and Ambrosius' "Friends & Lovers" at No. 10. NIELSEN SOUNDSCAN BUILDING CHART Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title 1 NEW Jason Mraz "Yes!" 2 NEW "Weird Al" Yankovic "Mandatory Fun" 3 NEW Rise Against "The Black Market" 4 NEW Kidz Bop Kids "Kidz Bop 26" 5 3 Sam Smith "In the Lonely Hour" 6 2 Soundtrack "Frozen" 7 5 Ed Sheeran "x" 8 NEW Bleachers "Strange Desire" 9 4 Trey Songz "Trigga" 10 NEW Marsha Ambrosius "Friends & Lovers" The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

I think I will be embarrassingly upset if Al doesn't get #1 now. After 35 years in the business, a first #1 would be incredible.

Get it Al! This era will be massive success if he also got a top 40 hit on Hot 100.

Who would have thought Weird Al would have an opening week that matches Shakira. And without any traditional promo

Non-traditional promotion, like traditional, will have varying degrees of impact, depending on the act. With Alfred Matthew Yankovic, it's obviously working.

I'm all for Weird Al and what not, but it would be a bit of a defeat for Jason if he got robbed of #1 by Weird Al of all people.

If it was that close and I were Mraz, I'd buy 10,000 CDs. If they're sale priced at $5.99 that's come to $59,990. Big deal.

Except that the people that count up the totals for the week filter that sort of thing out.

Quite frankly I'm surprised Jason sold this much without a hit single. I expected half this total. I'd be pleased if he got it but he could do it with the next album for sure if he came this close this time.

He had a pretty strong preorder period I would imagine. He released 1 song every Monday for the past like 6 weeks or so and by the end they were debuting fairly high on the iTunes chart from preorder automatic downloads

LOL Indeed, Gary. :) Plus, the negative publicity from buying so many units of your own album (y'all know it would come out) wouldn't be worth the trouble.

In that scenario, it still would be a nice gesture but it would not buy a #1 album

Plus it's been reported for most of the week that Weird Al would likely get the #1 so if suddenly Mraz pulled ahead, even legitimately, the result for him might be more mildly negative than positive. People are rooting for Al now. Jason can take it next time (I hope).

He could be 10000 behind and Hits would still have them close right now. It's just click bait.

www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgiCHART PREVIEW: The battle for #1 heated up late last week and over the weekend, as RCA and Atlantic competed to give their respective artists, βWeird Alβ Yankovic and Jason Mraz, a career-first #1 album. Using Amazon Digital as a vehicle, the labels temporarily lowered the price of each new release to $5.99. As of this morning, Mraz is still sale-priced, but Yankovicβs album, which is back to regular price, is on top. At iTunes, itβs currently the reverse, with Mraz in the lead and Yankovic at #3. Will this strategy give Mraz, who was trailing Yankovic by only a few thousand units at midweek, the additional push to reach #1? Or will Yankovic, who has already doubled initial expectations, continue to build? Can either album hit 100k? Keep an eye on our Building Sales Chart for clues. (7/21a) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I doubt 100k.
