YOUR TOP 15: RCA's "Weird Al" Yankovic is pulling ahead in the battle for #1 on next week's chart with Mandatory Fun, his 14th batch of hit parodies, which is currently #1 at iTunes. That's not to say it's a done deal; with only a few thousand separating Yankovic from challenger Jason Mraz, the top of the chart is still up for grabs. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend: 1. “Weird Al” Yankovic (RCA) 80-85k 2. Jason Mraz (Atlantic) 73-78k 3. Rise Against (DGC) 58-63k 4. Kidz Bop Kids (Razor & Tie) 45-50k 5. Frozen (Walt Disney) 33-38k 6. Sam Smith (Capitol) 33-38k 7. Ed Sheeran (Atlantic) 24-27k 8. Now 50 (NOW) 21-24k 9. Trey Songz (Atlantic) 20-23k 10. Bleachers (RCA) 17-19k 11. Miranda Lambert (RCA Nashville) 16-18k 12. Jason Derulo (Warner Bros.) 14-16k 13. Brantley Gilbert (Valory) 14-16k 14. Lana Del Rey (Interscope) 14-16k 15. Marsha Ambrosius (RCA) 14-16k 16. Sia (Monkey Puzzle/RCA) 14-16k 17. Morrissey (Harvest) 14-16k (7/17p)

Was hoping to see Bleachers in the mix there - I wonder how much an iTunes stream last week would've helped.

Yankovic's promotion this week is spot-on, and both videos he's released are getting a positive response. If he keeps that streak going over the next couple of days, the #1 might be his. If not, I think the week belongs to Kidz Bop.

All s**tty (relative to the artist) with the exception of Weird Al. I believe Mraz and Rise Against did like 100K and 85K on their last albums.

Was hoping to see Bleachers in the mix there - I wonder how much an iTunes stream last week would've helped. I Wanna Get Better was obviously a force at alt, but the buzz for the overall project seems far more concentrated with other musicians (so many popular acts were pushing Bleachers when it first started) than actual fans or influential media. I barely even remembered this album came out this week. The live performances I've seen really haven't gotten the act over either. Antonoff is obviously a talented musician, but he's just not a frontman -- and I'm talking as much about his lack of presence and control as a vocalist as I am his forgettable look and style.

This will be Weird Al's third consecutive top 10 album after first getting there in 2006, and his first ever top 5:
"Weird Al" Yankovic - #139 "Weird Al" Yankovic in 3-D - #17 Dare to Be Stupid - #50 Polka Party! - #177 Even Worse - #27 Off the Deep End - #17 Alapalooza - #46 Bad Hair Day - #14 Running With Scissors - #16 Poodle Hat - #17 Straight Outta Lynwood - #10 Alpocalypse - #9 Mandatory Fun - #3? #2? #1?
His albums are certified for 8 million copies sold, according to the RIAA. 4 Gold, 6 Platinum.

One to look out for:
The subsequent week brings Capitol’s 5 Seconds of Summer, which is looking mighty big—with 140k in preorders, the forecast is currently 200k+.

While the numbers are not eventful, at least it looks like it will be a close race.

Weird Al getting a #1 record would pretty much sum up how this year's release schedule has been.

Hope Jason takes the #1, even if it is at much lower numbers than his last album.

Wow, would be awesome to see Weird Al get a #1 album. Either way, Top 5 is a lock, and he has never done that before, so that is awesome!

HITS:
OUR NEW RELEASES: The race has narrowed to two. Jason Mraz and “Weird Al” Yankovic are locked in a head-to-head battle for the top spot on next week's album chart—one armed with an axe and the other with an accordion. Neither artist has previously had a #1 album, but only one has worn a fat suit in a video. Here are this week's key debuts:
Jason Mraz (Atlantic) 70-75k “Weird Al” Yankovic (RCA) 70-75k Rise Against (DGC) 50-55k Kidz Bop Kids (Razor & Tie) 45-50k Bleachers (RCA) 17-19k Marsha Ambrosius (RCA) 14-16k Morrissey (Harvest) 13-15k
On a personal note, those of us in the editorial sector owe “Weird Al” a debt for his grammatically ardent spoof of “Blurred Lines,” seen above. “Word Crimes” is already casting a spell online, having earned more than (not “over”) 2.4 million views. #nerds (7/16a)
