"Sweet Little Somethin" already debuted on Billboard Airplay chart this week. Is it the next single? Seems like an obvious smash.

"Sweet Little Somethin" already debuted on Billboard Airplay chart this week. Is it the next single? Seems like an obvious smash. Hard to say. It could be but I don't think a chart appearance by SLS necessarily means it's the new single. A Tim McGraw album track just debuted tonight as well, and it's definitely not his new single, as "Shotgun Rider" was released just a couple of weeks ago and climbed up from #41 to #31 on tonight's Billboard chart. Plus, "Burnin' It Down" looks to be about 3-4 weeks away from topping the charts. I just checked AllAccess and it looks like all of the plays of "Sweet Little Somethin'" are from iHeartRadio stations. The bulk of the spins and audience comes from WUBL in Atlanta, where "Sweet Little Somethin'" got 33 spins and nearly 500k in audience this past week. Some of Tim McGraw's new album tracks got airplay on iHeartRadio stations as part of an album launch party. I also heard that Bobby Bones is hosting a Kenny Chesney album launch party tomorrow night. KNIX (iHeartMedia's Phoenix station) is airing it at 8pm. The difference between the Aldean track and the ones by Tim and Kenny is that Aldean's album isn't out yet, but I'm assuming that some iHeartRadio stations were simply jumping on it because it's available online. It used to be pretty common for the superstars to chart a few album tracks right around the time of the album's release, so I think that's just what we're seeing here--some stations really excited about new Aldean music. SLS could wind up being his next single, but I don't think its chart appearance means anything one way or the other.

Whoa! Curious to see if his album sells as expected. So far this era though, Jason's performance in single sales has been very impressive. HDD

I know the iTunes pre-orders have been strong; the label must know brick & mortar orders have been heavier than for Night Train, too, or they wouldn't release a projection like this. Pretty amazing.

I have a question.
Singles sales are calculated differently than album sales, correct?
For example, if 100 people buy the album, is that also 100 sales of the song "Burnin' it Down?" If not, then I believe iTunes calculating strategies may be flawed. I pre-ordered the album, so every time one of those new singles is released, iTunes automatically downloads it. So then "Gonna Know We Were Here" debuts at #12 on the Billboard chart. Are all those sales strictly single purchases or are some including pre-orders like my own purchase?
Either way, I think it shows that these new digital sales charts could be extremely flawed (with non-singles debuting at #12? Give me a break).

Either way, I think it shows that these new digital sales charts could be extremely flawed (with non-singles debuting at #12? Give me a break). I think the way it works is that when you pre-order the album (and subsequently download 2 or 3 songs with it), the songs that are already available are downloaded and it counts as a download for each song. So if 1,000 people pre-ordered the album, then each of the songs available before the album is released will have 1,000 downloads. Once the album is released, everyone that has pre-ordered the album is essentially using the "Complete My Album" feature on iTunes and downloading the rest of the album at the discounted price (since you've already paid for some of it when downloading the songs). Now instead of the Complete My Album counting for 1 whole album sale plus each track you purchased before counting as an individual sale, the Complete My Album feature actually subtracts sales from the previously downloaded songs. So those 1,000 preorders would have counted for 1,000 downloads for the pre-released songs, but when the album is released, the album sales would be 1,000 and the single sales would be 0 (unless people bought the individual tracks without pre-ordering or using the Complete My Album feature). This is how its been explained to me before, which may or may not be 100% true. But I think it makes the most sense because I do know that a purchase of an album does not count towards both single and album sales for each song on the record. Hopefully someone else will offer some more clarity on this, but I think that's the way it works

Either way, I think it shows that these new digital sales charts could be extremely flawed (with non-singles debuting at #12? Give me a break). I believe the way it works is as follows: When the individual tracks are made available & downloaded on an album pre-order, those count as individual track sales. When the album is finally released, the sales are converted to album sales and the individual track sales are reversed. Pre-orders can be cancelled before the album is released, which I think is why they count the tracks actually downloaded as individual sales up until the album release date. I know it was this way a while back and assume it's the same now. This is supported by the fact that you pay for the individual track sales on a pre-order when they are downloaded, but don't pay for the album until it is actually released, at which time you pay the balance owing after the single download hits.

So since you both said essentially the same thing (thanks for the responses!) as soon as Old Boots, New Dirt is released, all those pre-order album sales that downloaded songs like Gonna Know We Were Here are converted from single sales to album sales? That part makes perfect sense. But now Gonna Know We Were Here still has a BB peak of 12, even though some of its sales were for the album and not the song itself? Something smells corporate to me.

@nickv1025 Practical Example for your query below. And, as long as it is allowed, the corporate suits will take abuse with high profile releases; because the achieved chart peak of the individual downloads cannot be taken back; I mean, the chart rewritten or post-corrected. Excerpt from a past Billboard Hot 100 Spotlight. Week 11/20/12 when Taylor Swift was removed from the Singles Download Chart and subsequently fell off the Hot 100's Top 10:

Honestly, this is the only song that's going to be able to challenge "Play It Again" for song of the year, IMO. The sales are just rediculous, and it will get at least 2 weeks on top of Airplay chart. This song has been huge for him, and he might solidify it all by having his best album sales week when the album comes out.

beat me to it sooner. Listening now, will comment while listening
1. Just Getting Started: really like it. I'm a fan of this kind of guitar sound 2. Show You Off: meh not bad. Sounds a little more classic, like a song off of 'Wide Open' 3. Burnin it down: skip... not a fan although it grew on me a little bit 4. Tryin' to Love Me: like this one, reminds me of 'Country Boys World'. check it out 5. Sweet Little Somethin: love the guitar in this one. decent song 6. Laid Back: pretty good, a little up tempo 7. Tonight Looks Good on You: not too bad, a little slow down 8. Too Fast: meh not bad 9. If My Truck Could Talk: this is a cool one, definitely getting back to classic sound 10: Old Boots New Dirt: i don't mind it. this is the first title track in a few albums for Jason though that probably won't see much airtime 11: I Took it With Me: hidden gem i think. Im feeling this one 12: Don't Change Gone: this album definitely seems like (other than Burnin it Down) it will appeal to fans who like his more traditional country stuff) this song is one of em 13: Miss That Girl: not anything special 14: Gonna Know we Were Here: might seem a bit odd but this is my favourite from this album. Love the old school Rock n Roll power chords. been learning it on the guitar. pretty cool 15: Two Night Town: Lyrical performance is great. Will be cool to see live
overall its got a good feel but i'll give it a week or two to sink in
Turns out Jason will perform next summer at the Craven Country Jamboree here in Sasky. Really excited to see some of this stuff live

'Play It Again' is going to be 'song of the year'?
Exactly where will that take place since it will barely crack the top 10 in airplay @ Mediabase on their year-end cart when the 2014 chart year ends six weeks from Saturday on Nov. 15th.

It might not be In terms of airplay, but don't tell me that you honestly think "Beat of the Music" or "We Are Tonight" are bigger hits. No song can match Play It Again in terms of sales so far, it spent the most weeks at #1 (tied with Stay) and spent many weeks atop Hot Country Songs. It's also become on of his closing songs in his concert, which is pretty big considering his star status. The song was just clearly more popular so far than other country songs. Some of are close and in the discussion though, like This is How We Roll and Burnin It Down.

Congrats to Jason for a #8 debut for Tonight Looks Good on You. It's a real testament to the accuracy of the Hot Country chart. Other artists clearly didn't put enough thought or effort into their songs, some of them only slowly approaching the top 10 after weeks and weeks. If only they were Jason Aldean. Your sarcasm in these threads is getting ridiculous! I completely understand voicing your opinion of a song, an artist, or even being frustrated with the lack of "traditional" country on current radio stations, but continuously bringing this sarcasm and attitude in all these threads is getting tiresome to read! I'm really excited to see what Jason's album sales are. I know they're being forecast at 400k+ but I'm willing to bet it'll be more. Who knew this song would be so big for him? I definitely didn't think so the first time I heard it. It'll be exciting to see what they follow this up with...I'd love to see Two Night Town be a single at some point.

That's a reasonable request, and I apologize.
