We update the Certifications and eligibility during the weekly reports on Roughstock. But it's awesome to see George get yet another Gold and Kacey too.

Adding a couple more that just came out today...
-"Somethin' Bad", Miranda Lambert & Carrie Underwood: Gold -"Follow Your Arrow", Kacey Musgraves: Gold (her tweet about it was even better, too -- total sideswipe at radio) -"Yeah", Joe Nichols: Gold

Love that Kacey Musgraves. Considering the lack of support at country radio (despite one airplay top ten hit), she has one platinum selling single in Merry Go 'Round, a gold single in Follow Your Arrow, and a gold selling CD in Same Trailer Different Park. Go get 'em, Musgraves!

^^^^^Yet another staggering indictment of country radio and the country music industry in general; when folks vote with their wallets by purchasing your music and you win two EXTREMELY PRESTIGIOUS Grammy Awards in the two most prestigious categories in existence yet radio essentially ignores you due to their squeamishness, something's terribly wrong up & down Music Row in Music City.

Marv have to completely agree with you when someone like Kacey wins country album of the year and Country song of the year yet Country Radio hardly plays your music that shows that radio programmers are scared to play female artists who write their own music that aren't Taylor Swift or her type

I personally am not a fan of Kacey's music, but her sales and awards can't be denied! This makes you wonder how many of the great award winning late 80s/90s females would have been rejected by today's radio. Artists like Mary Chapin, Suzy Bogus, Pam Tillis, KT Oslin, Wynonna, Lorrie, Patty Loveless all were major CMA/ACM/Grammy winners at one point. Their music that was "normal" back then would be considered too "extreme" for females today. It's so pathetic how regressive this genre has gotten for women. There will never be a more diverse time in Country I'm afraid like there was from say 1985-2005. Those 20 years were the peak of commercial diversity for women and different styles of Country on mainstream radio. Even Reba. Her song "His Name Was John" which went top 20 would probably not even be allowed to be recorded by a label today and if it was wouldn't chart on radio.

Except the song that gave country/southern ideals the biggest dressing down was the only one of her songs to become a radio hit, and the most innocuous and most conventionally radio-friendly song on her album is stuck in the 30s. I can't explain why there seems to be such a disconnect between her reception from critics/awards bodies/diehard fans and her reception from radio programmers and casual fans, but I think it's a bit more complicated than "they can't handle the truth." There's something about her sound and style - not just her lyrics - that is not winning the requisite support.

It took me awhile to warm up to Kacey, but now I love her. I think there are several different reasons why she hasn't connected with radio, though: 1. She's female (duh ) 2. She's not mainstream to the level of Miranda, Carrie and Taylor. I'm sure that hurts her appeal in the eyes of radio, and God forbid they risk something " controversial"'like FYA. 3. Kacey has that niche singer/songwriter style, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. 4. I read an interesting article awhile back that stated a lot of DJ's at CRS LOVED Kacey and wanted to play her, but some of the bigwigs refused, and it hurt her chances exponentially. I think Kacey had a slight chance to keep the momentum going, but with the release of FYA as a second single, she killed her chances. Everything I've read about Kacey seems to indicate she knows radio isn't in her corner, so she's going to to do wherever she wants. As a female, her (sort of) grassroots success is pretty incredible. If anything, all of this has proven she DOES have tons of support outside of radio, which is something very few artists can claim..

I thought that "Blowin' Smoke" was Kacey's second single not "Follow Your Arrow" which was the third single from Same Trailer, Different Park. Correct. Follow Your Arrow was released as an instant grat/preview track once Merry Go 'Round started to slow, and most people anticipated it was going to be the second single. But then a Billboard article emerged in which all these radio programmers basically said "I could play this in New York, but not in [insert red state market]" and that it wasn't "pushing the envelope - it's where the envelope got mailed to." The initial reaction was that the article was ridiculous--no way professional radio programmers, in 2014, would be that backwards in their thinking--but it was obviously taken seriously enough to derail focus on FYA in favor of Blowin' Smoke. But as Kacey started to get big, that became the song onto which a lot of her fans started to latch (and became more of an anthem for her than Merry Go Round), so it emerged as the obvious third single. The thinking was that with all the buzz around it, all the awards (and awards show performances) and fan support, it would be able to overcome whatever initial reservations radio had. It didn't. And while it's easy to criticize country radio programmers for being backwards--they are--let's not forget that *ABC* censored the word "joint" during her CMAs performance. So it's more that society as a whole is backwards on this issue.

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/digital-and-mobile/6207020/jason-aldean-named-top-digital-male-country-artist-everJason Aldean Named Top Digital Male Country Artist (Ever) By RIAABy Billboard Staff | August 05, 2014 11:45 AM EDT Jason Aldean now owns the distinction of being the most downloaded dude in country music history. On Monday (Aug. 4), the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced that the star has notched over 21.5 million
certified digital song downloads or on-demand streams, making him the top digital male in the genre's history. In a statement, Aldean described the certification as a "huge honor" and thanked fans, his team, and the RIAA. "I love country music," he said, "and I wouldn't want to be doing anything else… there was never a Plan B for me." The milestone arrives a week after Aldean scored his first No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart with new single "Burnin' It Down." In its second week on radio, the track soared 42-1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, giving him his ninth No. 1 and the biggest leap to the summit in the list's history. "Down," co-written by Rodney Clawson, Chris Tompkins, and the Florida Georgia Line guys, is the lead single from Aldean's upcoming sixth album. Aldean's other No. 1s include "Why," "She's Country," "Big Green Tractor," "The Truth," "Don't You Wanna," "Dirt Road Anthem," "Fly Over States," and "Take a Little Ride."

The video for "Drivin' Around Song" has almost 3.5 million views on YouTube too, which is a ton of views for a single that didn't get much mainstream airplay. But honestly, it's all about the marketing. If Broken Bow had released that song as a Jason/Colt duet, it would've probably been an easy top 10. But since it was released by Average Joes as Colt "featuring Jason", it didn't stand much of a chance.

www.musicrow.com/2014/09/nashville-artists-earn-riaa-certifications/The RIAA presented numerous sales awards to Nashville-related artists last month.Taylor Swift’s sales tally kept growing, likely spurred by the excitement surrounding the release of her upcoming album, 1989. Earning digital sales awards (mostly Platinum or multi-Platinum) were her older tracks “Love Story,” “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “Mean,” “Mine,” “Fifteen,” “Back To December,” “Picture To Burn,” “Our Song,” “You Belong with Me,” “Safe & Sound,” “The Story Of Us,” “Crazier,” “Enchanted” and “Everything Has Changed,” featuring Ed Sheeran. Tim McGraw’s “Highway Don’t Care,” featuring Swift and Keith Urban, scored a 2x Platinum single award. Earning Platinum honors were Urban’s “We Were Us” featuring Miranda Lambert, The Band Perry’s “Done,” and Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass.” Jason Aldean, who recently received the RIAA award for Top Male Country artist, received a Gold single for “Burnin’ It Down.” Also earning Gold were Kenny Chesney’s “American Kids” and “Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven,” Colt Ford’s “Drivin’ Around Song,” Florida Georgia Line’s “Dirt,” Dustin Lynch’s “Where It’s At,” Justin Moore’s “Lettin’ The Night Roll,” Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow,” Brad Paisley’s “River Bank,” TobyMac’s “Made To Love,” Chris Tomlin’s “Indescribable” and Matthew West’s “The Motions.” The full list is here: 76.74.24.142/C0BA6DD1-CBDD-ADFF-640D-FF2E63E89351.pdf
