According to Billboard's latest update, RIAA has just certified 19 Chesney songs gold, platinum or multi-platinum. Not sure what these include, but I'd imagine Get Along is one of them in the Gold category. Forgive me for veering off a little, but the Eagles Hotel California, however, was updated (last time in 2001), went from 16x multi-platinum to 26x. Wow. Wonder what the closest country song is.

I believe the Eagles reference was for the album Hotel California, not the song. In a related note, the Eagles’ mid-1970s greatest hits album was also updated and has now surpassed Michael Jackson’s Thriller to become the best-selling album of all time.

Yep -- didn't look closely enough -- was album (thanks for correction), while still remarkable, the greatest hits hits album is really impressive at 38x. Looks like Garth Brooks leads country artists with Double Live at 21x. Not 100 percent, but maybe FGL's Cruise gets top honors for country song at 10X multi-platinum (although in my book that's an asterisk b/c of the cross-over remix).

Not specifically country related, but I learned something about RIAA certifications I thought was interesting. I’m currently listening to an episode of American Top 40 from 1970 on Sirius/XM’s 70s station. Casey Kasem was talking about gold certification in conjunction with a Credence Clearwater Revival song on the chart (I don’t think platinum certification existed back then). For singles at that time 1,000,000 units sold was the threshold for gold. Album certifications, however, were based on dollar sales (specifically $1,000,000) rather than units sold. I know that the box office charts for movies are based on dollar ticket sales rather than number of tickets sold, but I didn’t know that at one time that was also the case for album certification.

That is interesting, wonder when the change was made to units sold. According to Wikipedia the requirement of 500,000 units sold for a gold album was added in 1975. The wording of the article suggests that the requirement was in addition to the $1,000,000 in sales (which was based on wholesale price, not retail) as opposed to a replacement for the dollar sales requirement. I don’t know if that’s true or poor wording by the author. The platinum level was added in 1976, and in 1989, due to declining single sales, the thresholds for single certifications were cut in half to equal the thresholds for albums (500,000 for gold and 1,000,000 for platinum). Multi-platinum status was introduced in 1984 and diamond in 1999.
