"Fireproof" is only acting as a promo.
You know that One Direction would never release a ballad as the leader!

Best Song Ever was for their concert film and came out months before any announcement of a new album. It doesn't count .

From Billboard.com: One Direction's Free 'Fireproof' Scores 1.1 Million Downloads
When One Direction announced the title and release date of their fourth album, FOUR (due Nov. 17 on SYCO/Columbia Records), they did so with a twist. To celebrate the occasion on Monday, the pop group gifted their fans with a free download song, "Fireproof," from the upcoming album. The catch? It was only available for 24 hours, and only from OneDirectionMusic.com.
Columbia says that 1.1 million downloads of "Fireproof" -- which is not the lead single from FOUR -- were generated in the 24-hour span, worldwide. It's unusual for an A-list act to give away a track in this way, so there are few comparables. That said, it's worth noting that industry sources say a typical free single of the week in the U.S. iTunes Store generates around 300,000 downloads, on average.
In addition, Twitter reports that there were 1.7 million tweets about "Fireproof" on Sept. 8 through 6 p.m. At its high point, the topic was generating 5,369 tweets per minute. All that chatter helped drive "Fireproof" to No. 1 on the realtime Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 chart, where it spent about eight hours locked in the top slot.
Columbia also notes that FOUR has been doing brisk business with pre-orders via the iTunes Store. It has topped 67 of the merchant's country-specific album lists, according to the label. A year ago, when One Direction's last album, Midnight Memories, became available to pre-order (on Sept. 9, 2013), it led 39 iTunes territories.
All of this buzz could lead to One Direction scoring its fourth consecutive No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, when FOUR is released in November. It would follow their chart-toppers Up All Night, Take Me Home (both released in 2012) and Midnight Memories. Combined, the three titles have sold 5.4 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Horrific album title. Why couldn't they save 'Five' for next year anw? #basicasfuq
That said, Fireproof is amazing and I hope the rest of the album is like that as well.

So without hearing any of the new music besides "Fireproof", do we have any predictions as to how radio will treat them this era? It will be interesting to watch if nothing else. With the recent success of SOML and the growing "mature" sound they are starting to develop, what reaction from radio do you guys think they'll get?

Based on "Fireproof" alone, it's hard to tell how the radio will treat them.
In my opinion, "Fireproof" is more or less an album track than a true hit. It's a good song but if it was a single, radio would have a harder time picking it up

From Billboard: One Direction's 'Four' Offers Fans a 'Window' Into The Group
Much to the delight of Directioners everywhere, One Direction unexpectedly announced the release of their fourth album, aptly titled Four, earlier this month. It's set to hit retailers on Nov. 17, just in time for the holiday season.
It's a "window into how they're feeling and what they're going through. The happiness and the sadness and the ups and downs," 1D's frequent collaborator Julian Bunetta, who serves as a co-Βproducer/co-Βsongwriter on Four, told Billboard. "Everybody wants to not settle. Nobody wants to repeat the formula."
Before the album drops, 1D prepares for the release of its official lead single, "Steal My Girl," on Sept. 29. While the track has yet to even get its first spin, 1D already has fans buzzing with anticipation. They've previously offered up one of the album's other cuts, "Fireproof," as a free download for 24 hours, the day of the album's announcement on Sept. 8. And fans gobbled it up, downloading it 1.1 million times during that short window.
"I think that everybody felt like this was a nice, little change in pace," he said. "It's a nice breather and a nice sort of more sophisticated, artful way of making a pop song for kids from 8 to 80."
Given the song's unexpected, laid Βback vibe, he knows that the fans are looking for music that isn't always the obvious, fullΒ throttle choice like "Best Song Ever" or "Live While We're Young."
"Fans want to be challenged and they want to be led and taken to new places and hear things they haven't heard. And the boys definitely listen to the fans. And they're the ones who are giving me the go Βahead to also keep pushing it and trying things and making bold musical statements," he said. "And it's so freeing because we can just do whatever we want."
However, he noted, don't expect the album to mirror that from start to finish. "'Fireproof' was a color in the One Direction musical rainbow." The album, much like the song, will be "strong melodically and lyrically and it's going to be tastefully done whatever it is, but it's not all the songs have a 'Fireproof' vibe at all," he shared.
Four comes one year after their massive Midnight Memories dropped. It sold 546,000 copies in its first week, giving the group a chart-topping threeΒpeat. And, given the fandom around the group, they just might have another hit on their hands.
The group and team recorded it around the world and it was "an evolving experiment." With another year of musical growth and success behind them, Bunetta shared that the lyrics were important part process this time.
"All the songs on this record, there's a lot of intent lyrically with the message we're trying to convey," he said. "It wasn't just about 'oh this word sounds good;' there's a lot of intent about, and definitely different layers of messages."
In the end, he notes, the band wanted to "push the ball up the hill and make something that's lasting, make a piece of art that can last for a while. And the band are obviously at such a large level, that they didn't want to just phone it in."
With the album's release around the bend, the guys are quite busy. Currently, the band is on their Where We Are tour, which wraps up on October 5 in Miami. Then they will release the concert special, One Direction: Where We Are, to theaters Oct. 11 and 12.

They do seem a bit exhausted...I've been saying it for a while but they need a substantial break. At least 6 months off no writing, no touring, nothing. Just time spent doing whatever they feel like.
I honestly felt like the only one who was on his game at iHeart Radio was Harry. The other 4 were just off for some reason last night.

Very good! From what we've heard so far, it sounds like this could be Midnight Memories but with a smoother edge. I just hope that all 17 or so songs aren't sappy...

They're trying really hard to appeal to the parents of the teenagers they're targeting. I think that has a heavy hand in why they're so successful.
It sounds like it will do quite well but it has too much of the boyband sound (well, obviously) that, for me personally, work against the song's overall sound. I don't really care for songs where the vocals are exchanged between a bunch of people like that.

Sounds like a power ballad for the new generation. I only heard a bit of this but I liked what I heard.

I'm addicted to this song! OMG it's so good! Love the first 2 songs we've heard so far from the new CD. They talked about the new CD last night in Charlotte when I saw them. I see them again tonight for the 2nd show, I wonder if they'll mention the leak.

Okay so my opinion...
Chances are, the song won't receive the massive airplay that "Story Of My Life" had... and that's okay. I like "Fireproof" and "Steal My Girl" for what they are, but I'm still waiting to hear the roaring guitars and the irresistable chorus hooks that are synonymous with One Direction. Their sound is definitely changing and for some people, the new offerings might be a discouragement.

One Direction is like a fine wine, they and their music is getting better with age! They slayed in Charlotte last night. Best concert I've ever seen! The kids and the parents were all dancing and singing along, even a lot of the dads! But 1D's music is appealing to all ages and that's what is making them work so well.

So when do they usually announce their tour dates? I'm trying to plan vacation for 2015 already (where did this year go?!) and I'm going to try going to one of their concerts next year, but since the closest they came to my area on the WWA Tour was Chicago, I'm planning on just making a big trip out of it. For those of you who were around when they announced the WWA tour, when can I expect North American dates to be announced? Also, how much are concert tickets usually? I hear they're pretty pricey.
