Huge numbers for Tom Petty. Who knew he could still sell that well?

Wow, crazy that this will be his first #1 album.
Over the years, he's had 2 #2 albums, a #3, a #4, 2 #5s, a #7, #8, #9, and a #10.
If he ever gets a #6 album after this, he'll have had an album peak in every spot of the top 10.

As far as the week's generic post-grunge albums, Adelitas Way is a hell of a lot better, although that's like preferring getting trash rammed up your ass to rubbing your dick in broken glass.

YOUR NEW RELEASES: Happy Hump Day, classic rockers! Y’all must be way stoked, because Tom Petty will score his very first #1 album debut next week—and Eric Clapton’s J.J. Cale tribute set (guest-starring Petty, Willie Nelson and Mark Knopfler, among others) is also amping up at retail. Pass the legal marijuana! Meanwhile, Island's social star Shawn Mendes is making real noise on behalf of the young'uns. Here are this week’s key debuts: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (Reprise) 100-110k Eric Clapton (Bushbranch/Surfdog) 50-55k Shawn Mendes (Island) 45-50k Theory of a Deadman (Roadrunner) 25-28k Jenny Lewis (Warner Bros.) 15-18k PARTYNEXTDOOR (Warner Bros.) 14-17k Guardians of the Galaxy (Hollywood) 12-15k
Can't get enough Petty? Check out this Rolling Stone profile, in which he says, among other things, "If they had tried to offer my generation someone that had won a game show ... you would've been laughed out of the room." (7/30a)

I think it says a lot about who is still buying records that some of the strongest debuts of this year have been from people who were in their prime 30+ years ago.

Surely Tom Petty is getting a boost from Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" (aka "I Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty)
All seriousness, it's impressive how these older acts manage to not only sell but generate buzz. I mean, there's no meaningful airplay, iTunes exposure or video for this album, but it's still moving like freaking hotcakes.

It must have had some kind of buzz (maybe older people buzz) because enough people voted for it that it made Rolling Stone list of 10 best albums so far and that was before the album had even come out. He had released 5 songs from the album that apparently people really liked.

That's sort of what I meant - people were talking about this even though it wasn't getting what the new age of pop music fans would consider "buzz." But this absolutely felt like an on the radar release - it wasn't just some old guy going through the motions (as is sometimes the case when you see a veteran's album randomly pop up on the HITS DD update).

www.billboard.com/articles/news/6194316/tom-petty-first-number-1-billboard-200Tom Petty Set for First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield | July 30, 2014 6:23 PM EDT Veteran rock act Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are aiming for their first No. 1 album, as Hypnotic Eye could debut atop the Billboard 200 chart next week. Industry forecasters suggest the set -- which was released on July 29 through Reprise/Warner Bros. Records -- may sell around 100,000 copies in the week ending Aug. 3. The Billboard 200's new top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, Aug. 6. Though Petty has claimed 21 charting albums on the Billboard 200 -- with 11 of them hitting the top 10 -- he's never visited the top slot. The closest he got was a pair of No. 2 albums: 2010's Mojo debuted and peaked at No. 2, while 1979's Damn the Torpedoes spent seven weeks in the runner-up slot in early 1980. (It was stuck behind Pink Floyd's The Wall.) After Petty, watch for Eric Clapton's tribute to JJ Cale, The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale, to debut possibly in the top five with around 50,000. After that, perhaps Shawn Mendes' four-song self-titled EP may enter with around 45,000.

YOUR TOP 15: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers will score their first #1 album ever on next week’s chart, while Eric Clapton's J.J. Cale tribute album appears headed for a Top 5 bow—and both releases are prompting scores of classic-rock fans to make an extra stop at the dispensary. Here’s how it looks headed into the weekend: 1. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (Reprise) 100-110k 2. 5 Seconds of Summer (Capitol) 55-60k 3. Eric Clapton (Bushbranch/Surfdog) 50-55k 4. Shawn Mendes (Island) 43-48k 5. Frozen (Walt Disney) 30-35k 6. Sam Smith (Capitol) 28-32k 7. Theory of a Deadman (Roadrunner) 25-28k 8. Kidz Bop Kids (Razor & Tie) 20-22k 9. Ed Sheeran (Atlantic) 20-22k 10. Now 50 (NOW) 19-21k 11. Weird Al Yankovic (RCA) 17-19k 12. Jenny Lewis (Warner Bros.) 15-17k 13. PARTYNEXTDOOR (OVO/Warner Bros.) 15-17k 14. Brantley Gilbert (Valory) 14-16k 15. *NSYNC (RCA) 12-14k 16. Trey Songz (Atlantic) 12-14k 17. Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack (Hollywood) 12-14k In other breaking news, the CIA has admitted to spying on the computers of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Finding no actual intelligence, they surfed for porn for a while, checked Vine and then played some online solitaire. (7/31p)

NSYNC? They released an album? ??? It's a digital-only compilation with no new material. It was news to the group: Lance Bass @lancebass I love when the record label doesn't even tell you they are releasing a new 'NSYNC album tomorrow! #TheyCare7:04 PM - 28 Jul 2014

That "Essential" album has more non-hits than hits- should have just kept it at one disc. Cyndi Lauper's was one disc upon its initial U.S. release.

The NSYNC disc is sold out on Amazon and was pretty high up on iTunes. 14,000 of a surprise album no one knew about is pretty impressive. Shows the power of social media and the love for the band.
Nice to see Petty with a chance at 110k now! Love Sheeran still in the top 10. I need his second single to really take off though.. cmon!
