The day has finally come for Teyana Taylor. Six years after making her debut, the Harlem singer has announced a title and release date for her first album. The project, entitled VII, will arrive October 21 via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam. “Don’t Sleep. #VII #Oct.21 #ItsTime,” tweeted Teyana. She explained the title, adding, “(S.E.V.E.N: 7 is the year of completion) Is everything is finally falling into place, God Is Great.” Earlier in the week, a blonde Teyana shot a video for the first single “Maybe” featuring Pusha T and Yo Gotti, and is readying “Do Not Disturb” as the potential follow-up. The 23-year-old was previously signed to Pharrell’s Star Trak/Interscope label, where she released her debut single “Google Me,” but her album From a Planet Called Harlem never saw a commercial release. After parting ways with the label in 2012, she released her mixtape The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor and signed a deal with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music. In the meantime, she has appeared on the G.O.O.D. Music compilation Cruel Summer and West’s Grammy-winning album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. She will also join August Alsina on his upcoming “Testimony Live” tour, which kicks off August 14 in Seattle. Listen to a teaser of her new song “Request” below. http://instagr.am/p/rKeWBXosDq First single: Maybe.

"Maybe" is everything and made me excited for her music. Glad a video is coming for it.

Not! She has better selfies on instagram that would make a better album cover.

Album leaked.
It is really great. I'm surprised. She can have a lot of urban hits with this.

I was kind of surprised to see her at #4 on iTunes, good for her.
The album is fantastic.

Def Jam did a terrible job with this stocking this. Apparently, the only retailer carrying it is FYE for $12.99/$14.99; it doesn't exist in Walmart's database; went to Best Buy's site and it's on back-order; went to Amazon and it said they have 16 clean copies left and the explicit is in stock but requires an additional 1-2 days to process before shipping (standard edition only). Mess!

She has ZERO visibility. She will be lucky to crack 100k total. I had no idea she is from Harlem though. Maybe I'll see her around my hood.

The album is so good!!! Definitely not the sound I was expecting from her. You can really tell that Brandy and Lauryn Hill taught her how to sing. The production sounds like a wet dream for a R&B fan who grew up in the 90s. I'm shocked that there's NO uptempo tracks on the album. I am also shocked that considering how well-connected she is, that there aren't a lot more high profile collaborators/producers on the album. If I were her, my first single would have been written by Ester Dean, produced by Kanye, with a feature from Chris Brown and Kanye. But I do admire her kind of taking the approach of (sort of) doing it on her own merit.

Her sound is really cool. It's like her vocals are clearly influenced by neo soul artists but the production is very current, with some 90s R&B influence.

The album is definitely good and I'm shocked by it. I see her influences with Brandy, Lauryn Hill and some vocal styling from Beyonce. I would throw Janet in the mix as well. I love that it feels so 90s inspired, but it is refreshing to me. It takes me back to real R&B music. Anyway, my immediate favorite is "Just Different" (the vocal layering during the verses is excellent). I also love "Do Not Disturb Me" which reminds me of a slow jam version of "Drunk in Love" and "In the Air" (which I think could work as a single if she throws a bridge and rapper on it). I hope she can get a solo hit though. I like that she gave us the full versions of "Outta My League" and "Put Your Love On" especially the former because I was a bit heated once it ended once I started to get into it. This is such a difference from her "first" single "Google Me" and I'm happy that she took her time to make this album, you can hear the quality. I wish her the best and hopefully her label picks up the pace so she can be successful (or at lest semi-successful).

Janet was a direct influence for this project because she wanted to bring back "sexy R&B", which I think she succeeded with flying colors. Maybe has been a slow burn but I hope the single with CB sticks and blows up at radio so the public can be made aware of this great project (and it can be properly stocked).

It's kind of crazy to me that virtual no-names like Tinashe, Jhene and Sevyn all had proper album rollouts and Teyana, who at the very least is a name in the industry, was basically paid dirt even with a pretty good label.
I guess that's the difference a hit can make. I wish they would have tried to establish her at radio more but I can see that she wanted to get the album out.

Request is FIre! What sucks is that even though MAYBE is climbing urban, I don't see Def Jam doing much more after this single when the album arrives DOA. I'm also surprised that there were no uptempos on the album with her dancing ability

Feud and CB aside, why are comparisons being drawn between her and Rih? I think I answered my own question but it's continuously disappointing that a two-to-three person paradigm reinforced by diehards does not allow the capacity for other black women to make a name for themselves and thrive. I love her album, I think she's gorgeous from head to toe and there is no one among the current crop of R&B singers whose lower register possesses such authority and wisdom.

"Just Different" and "Do Not Disturb" are my favorites. I hope the latter can become the big Urban hit "Maybe" wasn't.
