Rob's third solo album, reportedly titled The Great Unknown, is currently slated for release next year. No word yet on the release of a lead single.

I loved his first solo album in 2005. I liked the 2nd one, but I never quite got into it in the same way as his first. I will give this new one a chance next year.

I'm a huge MB20 fan and I loved LNM. I hope he does something like 'Her Diamonds' but with a popier beat.

Really excited about this. His second album took a while to grow on me but it's among my favorites now. I'll welcome any new Rob material, whether it be solo or Matchbox.

MB20 is still listed on Atlantic's roster but Rob's not listed as a solo artist. He's still associated with Emblem Music as far as I know.

Also, I think he is still with Atlantic Records. I think someone would have written something up if he had parted ways with them. He's also worked with this guy, Dan Finnerty. The Dan Band from The Hangover. LOL! I wonder what they came up with. Would love to hear it. /photo/1 www.thedanband.com/

Kyle - thanks for the list. I hadn't seen some of the song titles before. I have a few more things from twitter you can add to your list. No problem, I'm stoked for the album too, Matchbox Twenty was something I grew up on, so I'm a huge fan of Rob. I added some of the stuff to my post.

All info from Rob's tweets.
A while back he said that the album will come out during the first quarter of 2015. I hope that holds up because that would probably mean a lead single in Jan-Feb 2015. :) It would be too much for Atlantic Records to try to get Rob some exposure on the Grammys next year. It would fit in nicely with a first quarter release. Trivia - Rob won three Grammys for Smooth in 1999. That's the only year Rob has appeared on the Grammys. Really tragic (and surprising) for someone who has sold around 27 million albums worldwide (with and without band) in 18 years.
Recorded vocals and piano yesterday....more today!

Rob is one of those artists who earned so much goodwill with me over the years that I'll always check for him. I'd always be happy to have angsty late 90s/early 00s Rob back, but I'd also rather have creative uptempo pop than "Someday"/"Overjoyed" soccer mom material so the descriptions have some promise.

I'm definitely looking forward to this. I've really enjoyed both of his solo albums, as well as all four MB20 releases. I doubt it will see all that much in terms of commercial success, but I'm expecting it to be very good.

I really wish Rob could make some sort of comeback to the world (the last song by him that got a lot of airplay on the radio in my area I think was either Someday or How Far We've Come), but I don't know if he can. Hoping for the best

Great picture of Rob and Adam Shankman from today. Rob has been in the studio in NYC recording vocals and apparently Adam listened to some new songs today. He's a friend of Rob's but he says some of the best work of his career. Love hearing that! New song title, The Great Unknown. http://instagram.com/p/uq-0yioJ6Q #

More info for those following along. Again, Rob per twitter.... Hopefully, first single by February 2015 (yeah!) Will participate in a Cyndi Lauper fund raiser concert Dec 6th at the Beacon in NYC for her True Colors Fund. truecolorsfund.org/homefortheholidays/Another song title - Even Stars Fade Update - Rob said at the end of the interview with him and Taylor Kitsch that the single will be out in February/album in May. I was opening for the album in March or April but May will work, too. :) www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hInHzcvyhg&list=UUDmwNmSkgpY9sw0aT-P3N6AAnother new song title - this one co-written with Ryan Tedder. "Trust Me"

I guess I'm the only active poster in this thread right now but I know there are some lurkers so I'm going to go ahead and bump this great news!
I was just watching The Band's The Last Waltz on AXSTV (concert TV station in the US) and I saw the first ad running for this. I can't wait. It's Matchbox Twenty's first live TV concert performances since taping a show in Atlanta in maybe 2000.
AXSTV Matchbox Twenty LIVE North Tour Premiers Sunday 2/15/15 at 8pmET
Rob said his single will be out in February. I hope he gets a little promotion for his single at least.

Thanks Kyle. Here's maybe a better version of The Great Unknown. I have to say this is BY FAR my favorite of the four new songs he has played so far. Rob's voice is just so made for the flow and tone of this song. I also think the lyrics are very simple but so very eloquent in this one. Rob has said the record has an 80s feel to it. I'm going to say when the music is added that this will have a very Phil Collins - Genesis vibe to it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1SG6wSipzQ

It looks like Rob more or less said this weekend...first single beginning of summer and the album sometime during the summer. Dang it.
Well, the push back means one of these two things - this will be priority release for Atlantic Records near the end of summer and they want time for a proper set up (like using a song in a big budget movie) or this album is not a priority and Atlantic has pushed it back so they can work on Ed Sheeran, Kid Rock, etc., that are out now or have a confirmed release date. Actually, there's probably a middle option here and that's where Rob is.

This is interesting. The CEO of United Entertainment Group (also teaches marketing at Columbia University) posted this picture of him and Rob yesterday on twitter. Caption - "Rob Thomas will be big news this Spring. Get ready!"
/photo/1
I have no idea what that might mean - probably nothing - but wouldn't if be great if they were about ready to tie one of his new songs into a national ad campaign of some kind. I know neither Rob or Matchbox Twenty have done that and I think I read once that Rob was actually opposed to song placement in ads (has put some of his music on sports and TV shows) but when radio play starts drying up a clever artist will look for other avenues to get their music heard.
We'll see what happens!
