Britney and Whitney.
If Mariah's debut era was an option I'd choose her, though.

Ugh I'm sure if I was older I would appreciate all of them. But I really was old enough to acknowledge Britney's. Britney's debut was pretty amazing though.

I would argue that Daydream was Mariah's peak. Fantasy and One Sweet Day performed stronger than Dreamlover and Hero.

I'd actually say that 1990 was Madonna's peak. This image of her is just so iconic and so powerfully engraved into popular culture. It doesn't matter that technically, other females were outselling her during this period in the US (none of whom still came close to her international success during this period though), or that she had more mania around her during her Like A Virgin days, or that she'd get more critical recognition for her music later. THIS is the image of Madonna, the most powerful and respected female artist ever. The woman who revolutionized the industry and popular culture in so many ways. There's still references to how she looked during this period and what she did. If you show this image to most people, they will know exactly who it is, even if they weren't even close to conception when this was actually occurring. Nothing put forward by any other female artist during this period matches it (no, not even the RN video for Janet). This is the period (1989-1991) where the Legend of Madonna was really solidified. The image that has made it into academic textbooks. Sooooooooo yeah, a write in vote for that haha .

I'd actually consider Daydream to be Mariah's peak era. Either way she wins for me.

I didn't live through it but unquestionably Thriller. My thoughts exactly. A shame I didn't get to experience it as it was happening, since it truly is the most iconic era in pop music history, any way you slice it.

I completely agree with you about 1990 being Madonna's peak….I think it is difficult to determine because she had a hot period that lasted for so long! However, I remember in 1990 she was so insanely talked about, and to think that this was before the internet!

Is BOMT regarded as Britney's peak? I always assumed that was around the Toxic/Everytime era.

I didn't live through it but unquestionably Thriller. Yeah, best selling album of all time (at least in the U.S) 5 #1's, 7 top tens, only 2 album tracks (which are also great songs). So many classics on that album. it gets my vote for sure.

Its hard not to choose Michael. Just an absolute icon and everything came together with that entire era just to be legendary beyond belief. Not sure we will ever see another like him. I actually love all the rest of them too and loved the eras mentioned and others, but again its hard to choose anyone but Michael.

I feel MJ is a no brainer, even if you did not live through that time period, each & every song from that era was a mini era within its self. They all made massive placements in music history.

Daydream was Mariah's peak not that it matters because Musicbox also sold 32 million worldwide, so as usual great job queen. Peak to me is best, not most selling. So Daydreams and Butterfly, that was her peak. JORDIE.
Anyways MJ Thriller>>>>>>

Not that sales don't matter, because they always do, but people do know these artists best by these periods, I checked it by searching google for what people do think their peak is. They do know Britney, UNDOUBTEDLY, best by Baby One More Time, everyone knows the school girl. So shut up about it and except it the way it is. It's their peak, everyone LOVED MJ in the Thriller era and everyone LOVED Britney in the Baby One More Time era, even if they're not your favorites.

Well, since 2005 Kelly Clarkson isn't an option, I'll go w/ Britney. But I kinda saw her peaking more with Oops.. I Did it Again moreso.

Britney's peak is clearly the IAS4U VMA performance - and really that entire era. It's one of the most iconic images in pop culture and I don't think anyone could successfully argue that something she did before, or has done since, is either more well known, or more universally loved and respected. Catholic school girl was iconic, but the snake wins. She literally owned the world for about a three year period, culminating in this era and that is represented perfectly in that performance.

Regardless of erroneous peaks and all. I'm glad this thread was made and google was able to bring up "Thriller" because that whole era. From videos, to music, to iconic to worldwide cult following. Michael's Thriller is a moment in history unlike any other

Probably Michael Jackson and Thriller but Britney was huge when I was a kid so I voted for her for nostalgia.
