It's hard to believe that "Shotgun Rider" is the #1 country song on iTunes right now. It seems there's usually a song with more cross-genre appeal on the charts that ends up being #1. This is actually only at #36 on the all-genre chart, which is usually good enough to be at least top 5 on iTunes country but rarely #1. I guess it's just timing and the CMA performance a few weeks ago has given this song a lasting boost of digital momentum. This will definitely bode well for Tim's chart run, and he may be able to get four weeks at #1. See I thought that #36 was pretty high for all-genre. Aside from the genre-bending tunes like those from Carrie or FGL, I thought most normal country songs would be lower. Could be wrong since I haven't been doing this for that long. Regardless, I agree with all your points and I'm glad this song is still holding strong with listeners, both over the airwaves and digitally.

I guess this is decent for a song that doesn't really have any potential for multi-format appeal (no pop or rock elements, etc.), but in the past the #1 country seller has been a bit higher. I guess the four big digital hits recently have been "Burnin' It Down," which lingered in the top 10 all-genre for the better part of its chart run, "Dirt," which spent most of its chart run in the top 20, "Leave the Night On," which spent a lot of time in the top 30, and "Something in the Water," which was in the top 30 for quite a while and just recently fell a bit lower. Before those, we had big hits from Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum, and Dierks Bentley representing country nicely on the iTunes chart, and Maddie & Tae's debut single was doing really well at first, too.
I guess there's just a bit of a "hangover" now since there aren't really any big pop-sounding hits too high up the chart at the moment, but there are big digital hits from the usual suspects (Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, and Jason Aldean) as well as great sellers from Lee Brice, Thomas Rhett, and Sam Hunt that are making their way up the charts. Carrie Underwood and Blake Shelton can also expect boosts this week as Carrie releases a Greatest Hits record and Blake Shelton performs his song on his reality TV show, so I definitely expect the bar for the #1 country song to be raised later this month.

Tim has never been interested in securing airplay at other formats in spite of the airplay records for 'Over And Over' at top 40 radio in 2003; as the most-played artist of the decade (2000-09) on US radio, multi-format airplay is the least of his concerns.

Not discouraging exactly, but just dated and awkward. If this were a woman singing to her supposed true love guy, hard to envision it being acceptable for her to call her him her shotgun rider just riding around for life in her passenger seat and never driving, never riding in his car - just always the passenger in hers. It reinforces it in the lyrics because Tim is singing how he can't imagine life without {fill in the lyric} with this particular woman. Which makes it seem that whatever you put into that lyric, is something that is viewed as going on and on and on in their relationship. Not just I can't imagine being in a relationship with some other girl in my passenger seat, but I can't imagine being in a relationship with you without you in my passenger seat because that is so much part of how I live. Maybe they should just Ueber it and avoid the whole shotgun rider thing

I definitely would like to give my endorsement for either Overrated or Diamond Rings and Old Barstools as the next single. Both are fantastic, would sound great on radio, and are exactly the type of songs Tim should be singing these days (and not Southern Girl or Looking For That Girl). Overrated would probably be another #1, although it sounds slightly similar to Shotgun Rider, so they might want to wait for the 4th single for that one.

I know, it's hard to believe this era has blown through three singles already, but it has!

Very happy to see Tim holding his own this far into his career; "Meanwhile..." and this single here is definitely the kind of radio output I'm expecting from him now. As far as the fourth single goes, I'm just hoping that we don't get another dud next.

Luckily the album is really good, so I don't think there are many duds left to choose from.

Given the abundance of great songs on this wonderful CD, his next two singles from it should both be downright wonderful as well as huge smashes barring a wholesale whiff on the singles which wind up getting chosen.

This song is okay, but I really can't see myself getting into it.

Just looked it up and Shotgun Rider debuted the same week as People Loving People (#51 vs. #19). Look who has the bigger hit now?

I think most here would have predicted Tim would have the bigger hit anyway. "People Loving People" flaming out did not surprise me, and neither does "Shotgun Rider" spending multiple weeks atop the chart.

"Shotgun Rider" has retained its hold for #1 on MB this week making it four weeks in a row at #1. Given the "freeze" of the past two weeks, it's no surprise that it remains #1. It's the longest stay at #1 for tim since "Live Like You Were Dyin'" in 2004. Previous longest stint was 3 weeks for "One Of Those Nights" and "Felt Good On My Lips."

You cannot make this stuff up. All Access now has an article congratulating Big Machine's promotional department and staff on "Shotgun Rider" being Mediabase's #1 song this week. This less than an hour after All Access pulled down their article congratulating Arista for getting Perfect Storm" to #1. All Access

Obviously congrats are in order to Tim pulling an impressive 4-week number one, even all things considered.
I just hope they intercepted that sweet treat delivery in time...

The label just sent out PR info for this. #1 for both charts this week. It's his longest stay at #1 since "Live Like You Were Dying." It's also now Gold.

Tim's 4th week in the penthouse was indeed a squeaker---72 points, or approximately 15 or so spins.
I pointed out on the Carriefans board that most tunes which rise to #1 at any time during the month of December very frequently spend multiple weeks (4+) at #1, and that includes some of the format's very biggest hits of the past 15 years.
An off-the-top-of-my-head list included My Next Thirty Years, Breathe, There Goes My Life, Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning?), Something Like That, Some Beach & Need You Now among them.

Looks like they were counting their chickens before they hatched! Brad is #1 on Billboard, although I did see a "thanks for 4 weeks at #1" ad from Big Machine in tonight's Billboard update. I'm sure they were mostly referencing Tim's 4-week stay at #1 on Mediabase but usually they would only have the ad in the Aircheck chart then and not in the BCU too.

Yeah, though you know the labels consider a #1 on either major country chart a #1 even though most non-industry folks think Billboard is the only one that is of merit (not folks here because, well, we're all more 'aware'). It'll be interesting to see what he goes with next. I think he's got at least 2 more singles on "Sundown Heaven Town" but think "Overrated" is the most-likely bet to be a big hit.

To be fair, Need You Now hit number one early in the month. Reba's song spent the "cheater" weeks at the top during the freeze :)

This tune as well as 'Close Your Eyes' will both lose their bullets tomorrow morning, signaling an end to two great chart runs.
I wouldn't be surprised if both tunes fall out of the top ten next week.

I expect this to go recurrent a week from tomorrow, but this has been a great success for Tim. With this, "Meanwhile..." and the new single, I'm wondering if Tim may again find himself nominated for Male Vocalist at the ACMs. I know he's past the awards stage of his career, but I could see a way that he gets in there this year.

What has been Shotgun Rider's recent update, has he been immensely dropping in AI/Spins like how Girl In A Country Song dropped? Edit: It dropped 1-5 wow. I thought his audience approval for the song would have kept it going for a bit longer I'm not sure what you're getting at here. "Shotgun Rider" isn't falling any faster than any other recent #1's. In fact it's falling a bit slower, I'd say. Tim's only down about 6 million in audience over the last 7 days on Mediabase. That's not falling very fast, at all.
