What UK artists tried to break through in America but failed?
Take That - Had a huge hit with "Back For Good" but broke up immediately afterwards. Robbie Williams Blur - Always stuck in Oasis' shadow. Nowadays, most Americans remember them only for "Song 2." Five David Gray The Darkness

Westlife (only one Top 20 hit) Sugababes Though he had two big hits, Daniel Bedingfield's career didn't take off as much as sister Natasha's Samantha Mumba

Rita Ora kinda. She's tried and it just hasn't worked out for her (I feel like that "Black Widow" might be her only hit in the US).

Also, S Club 7 only had a Hot 100 hit, the #10-peaking "Never Had A Dream Come True" Sinitta also didn't have luck crossing over.

She's never released anything here. She could do it if they tried.

A few more recent examples:
Olly Murs - He had that minor hit Troublemaker in the U.S. and nothing else. Emeli Sande - The UK's biggest success story of 2012 did not pull an Adele. Labrinth - Hit with Beneath Your Beautiful and faded quicker than Olly. Ellie Goulding - Borderline example; she had a few big hits in America but hasn't established herself as a superstar. Jay Sean and Taio Cruz - Had two big hits (and a flop album) before falling off the face of the earth. JLS - Made barely a blip on the radar. LaRoux - Had Bulletproof and never hit the charts again. Tinie Tempah - Had one U.S. hit and nothing else. The Wanted - Hit with Glad You Came, then 1D came and washed their momentum away.

All Saints ("I Know Where It's At" and "Never Ever" were their only hits here) Gary Barlow ("Love Won't Wait" was to be released in the U.S. but nothing happened) Geri Halliwell ("Mi Chico Latino" was a moderate success as was "Look At Me") Hazell Dean (her hits were limited to the club charts) Jimmy Ray (one top 20 hit called "Are You Jimmy Ray?" Mandy Smith Mel & Kim Richard Traviss (he was to be marketed in the U.S. after he left the group Bad Boys Inc. but nothing happened here) Rick Astley (one big hit in the form of "Never Gonna Give You Up") Sonia (moderate club success) Union J Victoria Beckham (limited radio airplay of "Not Such An Innocent Girl") Take That - Had a huge hit with "Back For Good" but broke up immediately afterwards. Their cover of "It Only Takes A Minute" was remixed for the U.S. market in the hopes of it crossing over, but nothing came of it. Blur - Always stuck in Oasis' shadow. Nowadays, most Americans remember them only for "Song 2." "Girls And Boys" also was a moderate hit. Sinitta also didn't have luck crossing over. Technically she was born here but all of her mainstream success was over in the UK. She had a couple of moderate club hits in the U.S. though.

Rick Astley (one big hit in the form of "Never Gonna Give You Up")
But "Together Forever" also hit #1 and I hear it more often than "Never Gonna...".

Doesn't technically apply, but Nicole Scherzinger couldn't make it here (as a solo act) so she went to Britain. I wish she'd come back (and to have some hits would be nice). I love her. :(

Some of the names mentioned above didn't "break" Britain past one or two hits either, so it's not really an example of a failure to make it in America. It's just a failure to make it.
Robbie Williams is a classic example. He was an absolute superstar in Europe, scoring hit after hit, album after album for a good decade. He TRIED to break the US, but we weren't feeling him here. He made it known that it was an intention of his and promoted singles here, but nope.
Rita Ora is a current example of this. Four UK #1's and only flops on her US resume (and one feature hit carried by Iggy's hot streak). No one can say she isn't hustling for a US breakthrough though- it's starting to reek of desperation.
Emeli Sande is another great example. Perhaps John Newman as well. Both had minor hits in the US with a worldwide smash and fell away.

The granddaddy of them all: Cliff Richard
Numerous hits in the U.K. but only a couple of minor top 40 hits in the U.S. in his over 60 year career.

Literally every grime rapper (Dave, AJ Tracey, Stormzy, Aitch, etc). I guess Skepta has had some success making it onto the likes of Playboi Carti’s and A$AP Rocky’s albums, but he hasn’t had any real chart success.

He actually made the US top 40 eight times, first doing so as early as 1959 but mostly in the late 70s and early 80s. But the only songs from him that seem to get any American replay now are "Devil Woman" and "We Don't Talk Anymore".

The early to mid 2000s were pretty notable for this - Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Atomic Kitten, Steps, S Club 7 to an extent, Blue, Five beyond a couple songs, Will Young, Gareth Gates, solo Spice Girls singles, Robbie Williams, Busted, McFly.. and later JLS, Alexandra Burke, Cheryl, The Saturdays. Such a disconnected decade.
