Official: "Sugar" debuts at No. 8 on the Hot 100 this week. It's tied for Maroon 5's 2nd-best debut after "Payphone" which debuted at No. 3 in 2012, and "Moves Like Jagger" which also debuted at No. 8 in 2011.

Thank God I don't listen to radio; I would hate to hear this bland offering routinely. It's like a slightly lesser "Birthday", and that track was awful. lol

When "Animals" debuted streaming was a factor for the calculation of the "Hot 100" correct??? I feel like that song was WAY bigger when it first came out. The video for "Sugar" is really that big???

Streaming has been a part of the Hot 100 for quite a while so it was included when "Animals" debuted. YouTube was added to the Hot 100 in February 2013
I have no idea how the Animals video performed when it was first released by Sugar is already at 54 million views in just over a week

It's just unfortunate to me that the blander and more pop-safe (and Adam-centric) they've become, the more success they've seen.

Did you even watch the Sugar video? It's the least Adam-centric video they've made in a long time. Way less Adam-centric than the "She Will Be Loved" video. And, that song was made during the "good old days" when Maroon 5 played actual instruments instead of ipods, and the other band members weren't kept in cages against their will by Adam. [/sarcasm] BTW, Animals is "only" at around 100 million views after several months. Sugar is already halfway there after a couple days. So, yeah, blowing Animals away.

If you don't think that video--and all its views--has everything to do with Adam's ego and the idea that him ( not Maroon 5) crashing your wedding is the BEST. THING. EVER., then I think we're done.

Forreal!!! The band is essentially Adam's backup. Nothing more, and no one even recognized who they were until Adam walked in, so that in itself is enough!

...the "Sugar" video is the most Adam-centric video ever. Actually, Sugar video is on par with Harder to Breathe and Sunday Morning in terms of the amount of screen time and attention given the rest of the band. They're in almost every shot that Adam is in and then some. Even people in the comment section of the video have remarked about how the rest of the band is getting more screen time usual. Of course Adam is one of the driving forces behind the views. Adam is the lead singer. And a lot of people like him. This has been the case since album 1. This has been the case for almost EVERY BAND EVER. And clearly, since the video blew up, the notion of Maroon 5 crashing a wedding would indeed be the BEST. THING. EVER. for lots of folks out there. It's not about ego (since Adam didn't direct the video, anyways). It's about knowing your audience and putting something out that will interest them.

I didn't particularly like this song when it was called "Birthday" or "Last Friday Night," but it's nice to hear something so bright on the radio in the middle of the winter doldrums. Strictly lyrically, however, this is possibly their worst single ever. So cliche-ridden that it literally might have been written in five minutes.

Doesn't always have to be rocket science. Sometimes you just want to sing a simple song that makes you (and other people) feel good. You know...because you're happy, happy, happy, happy, happy...[/smash hit]
BTW, Maroon 5 just released this:

Damn, so much negativity for such a feel good song. Let the light in, people. Fun people will get this track. Negative nellies won't e.g. some of y'all. That was such a lovely fan video. :) M5 fans are adorbable. Also, these big updates and the high placement on iTunes are too much. Bona fide smash in the making :-'(

I agree with the folks saying it sounds like last Friday night or birthday guitar riff. Thank you.

This is leaving "Birthday" in the dust and that is a real kii since they're the same song and same video. Maroon 5 have become corny and homogenized. They used to have an identity with their first and second albums, but now they're pretty much the male/band version of Katy Perry and the rest of the girls. And btw this music video reeks of staged.

@ the video. It is definitely all staged. One of the "brides" lives near me. She isn't married in real life. LMFAO
