Irrelevant point. If a lot of people are hearing a change in sound, 9/10 times there is an actual change of sound happening. :o Not irrelevant at all. There are many, MANY things in life that seem one way on the surface, until someone points out details that most people miss...or (in the case of my detailed and accurate previous post) ignore.

I just feel like if a group of people are hearing a sound change, you can't really DISPROVE that... and if someone doesn't hear it, you can't disprove that either... Their sound has went from grunge-pop/rock to electronic to borderline bubblegum pop... it's not a bad thing, and there may be similarities, but a change of sound has definitely occurred over their career.

I'm guessing "Harder to Breathe" is the "grunge" song? Actually, "Harder to Breathe" was a song they added to the album at the last second due to pressure from the record label. Lol, techincally if Maroon 5 ever sold out or "changed their sound", it was with Harder to Breathe. They literally made that song because they were told to. Yet, everyone thinks that harder rock-vibe was their "original sound" because it was their first single. But, that's not true. Most of the album didn't sound like Harder to Breathe, at all.

Well they also had a jazzy/rock/blues side to them too... not hearing much of that anymore. Let me just put it this way... they're original sound was more... organic? Did I say they "sold out"? No. But their sound has changed over the years...

Finally heard it for the first time on the radio. Been waiting half a year for that moment.

This song is holding up extremely well on ITunes. I like it alot but I didn't think it would stay in the Top 4 for such along time after the video release. I thought this song would be more of a consistent Top 10-15 range after the video release. Maybe "Pulse" jaded me to it's potential. Lol.

I don't see a change in their sound at all, the only reason that the songs might now sound different is the landscape of what is played on pop radio has changed, and thus their sound has changed (Just like Britney has always done pop, but her songs sound different). Thats what this band has been from the beginning pop pop pop, they have always catered to the preteen to early 20's crowd, or basic white suburban Beckys. I never saw them as some credible rock group that broke through the mainstream or something. So for me their sound didn't change, just the trends on pop radio.

Next time you hear "She Will Be Loved", try singing the lyrics to "Love Somebody" over the melody: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIjVuRTm-dcIt works VERY well. Heck, the lyrics of both songs are talking about the same exact thing...a guy who's trying to get a sad girl to notice how much he loves her.

I wouldn't be surprised at this point if this ends up as another #1 Hot 100 hit for them and I'm honestly shocked by its success since Birthday struggled so much despite coming off of one of the biggest hits of all time on top of being released by the biggest name in pop.

So they don't suck because they're gotten more bland over the years, they suck because they've been singing the same songs over and over?

Birthday only struggled because of the length of the video. I still stand by the notion if the video were normal length, it would've been Top 10. It had the airplay, it had the sales at the right moment.

It just seems strange that you're arguing against those who say their sound has changed as if it's a bad thing. You obviously enjoy it and that's cool. Personally, I like their old sound and yes, I do hear a difference. I always very much enjoy It Was Always You - and for the record, I think Sugar is the best of the three singles from this album so far.

Having similarities with other song doesn't mean both songs are the same. This has a feel good sound that Birthday doesn't have at all, it's way catchier. And the same with the video, maybe the concept is the same but the execution is very different, Sugar video has a nice vibe, Birthday video is creepy as hell (and not in a sexy way like Animals)
I think predict a number one at hot 100 is quite difficult, Animals seemed destined to that fate and peaked at three, at any moment a monster hit can appear and end blocking a song that seemed a sure shot at number one

This reminds me of Katy Perry's "Birthday" so so much.

Mediocre, generic, etc. I still love this bop. It succeeds in spite of itself.

'Birthday' didn't perform well because it just wasn't a good song. 'Sugar' at least has less cringeworthy lyrics.

It had the airplay, it had the sales at the right moment. You are so right. I will never get over the tragedy that was Birthday. That video is responsible for mass casualties. Not only did it ruin the song for me personally, it ruined its chances with streaming and the public just turned against it. Even though Sugar and Birthday are extremely similar, people are claiming one song is better than the other, when in reality its not quality but public opinion that is better for Sugar. And the Birthday lyric video gives us a sad glimpse at what could have been. It was cute and original and Katy was still sexy somehow. There's a reason the lyric video got more views.

This is more instant that Birthday. The falsetto chorus worked against that and drowned out the hook, that's not as much the case here. Still, I'm surprised it's this high on iTunes already, but sometimes some songs take off better and some don't.
