Their first album had some great songs on it.Seems like all they care about is putting out pop hits. And yes they get favoritism from radio.

I've always thought that their "switch" with MLJ was really exaggerated. They may have opted for cleaner productions, but generally their style is the same as it has always been. That combined with Adam's voice, which whether you like or not is distinctive, has always put them in their own lane as far as recognition is concerned. Some people act like their recent run of singles is like a string of Jessie J's Dominos, where a large amount of people actually think it's a different act doing the song.
I have never ever heard anyone, outside of this particular song on some forums, say that a Maroon 5 song sounds like ________. They've always sounded like Maroon 5, whether they were popular at the time or not.

They always have sounded like Maroon 5, yes. In my opinion the slight funk sound has went from being musical to being forced, and the song writing has transformed from an organic to a formulaic process for them. I know there will never be another Songs About Jane, but basically since the Voice, it's almost as if they have transformed into their own hit-making machine that is about that rather than the music. I'm not against hits. But I'd rather it be about the quality of the song than the brand.

Their first album had some great songs on it.Seems like all they care about is putting out pop hits. And yes they get favoritism from radio. They have aimed for pop hits consistently in their career. They are just smarter about it now have their songs produced by hitmakers. Even if MLJ didn't blow up, I believe this would be the exact same fifth record they would have put out. Maybe minor production changes and more guitar, but same type of record nonetheless.

Maroon5 was about ready to become just another band until The Voice and Adam's profile skyrocketed. You know, I'm a constant critic of this "band" but really it's just Adam. I don't watch The Voice so he hasn't wooed me with his great personality they are constantly telling me about in my weekly Entertainment Weekly magazine. IMO, it's all about being a celebrity with him rather than making great music (at least now - it may not have started off that way). I mean any guy that does acne commercials and then fronts a rock and roll band is a joke to me regardless of how nice he might be. That's really the bottom line why this group can't even buy a Grammy with all their success in recent years. A lot of other people must also think Adam is a sell-out. I hate using that word but with this guy I think it's appropriate. Anyway, their music is catchy and I can even stand Adam's recorded voice. It is distinctive which is important. I don't think he can sing nearly as well live, though. They buy songs now rather than writing them themselves and they allow the band to be shown in the dark behind Adam. Do the guys in the band have no shame? If it's just a song that Adam works on then leave the band out entirely instead of throwing more egg in their face.

I didn't say I hate the guy. I just don't like him. Hate is a big word that I don't like or use.
BTW, I've been a member of this board for 12 years. Yikes! Where has the time gone. Anyway, I post what I want to. I read the first couple posts above and thought I would respond with my thoughts on this "band." Sorry if you didn't personally like what I posted. Try their fan board if all you want to do is read people fawning for Adam and how gorgeous he is.

Cause that's a hilarious amount of vitriol for someone you've presumably never met.

I think the fan was probably just responding to the tone of the comments. it's seems the criticism was more about Adam Levine personally as there was a lot in there about his personality and his ego and his hogging the spotlight. That's not really a critique of the music.
I think Maroon 5 does sound different from when they first started out. Songs About Jane was a really good album and seemed more personal. But I think bands and their music always evolve. Levine is not the same person he was then but I think they've always been a pop band. Now they get more hits.
If there are complaints about Levine getting too much of the spotlight from the band, I haven't heard about it. Not everyone wants to be a star whose every move and personal life is watched. Maybe they're grateful that they have a little anonymity so they can have more privacy in their life. That doesn't make them a sell out. But if they break up over this or Levine decides he wants more of a solo career, well they wouldn't be the first band to do that.

I think "sell-out" is appropriate, and I have nothing against Maroon5 and Adam Levine. I like a fair bit of their music. However, it was Adam himself that said he'd never ever do exactly what he is doing right now. He said he wouldn't be standing up there trying to make hits at 40 and that he thought it was pathetic for bands to stay on the scene too long trying to be relevant.
Well....
And I've been on here 12 years also. I discovered Maroon5 before they hit it big following personal charts and loved Songs About Jane. They aren't that same band now even if they do have a good sound.

Try their fan board if all you want to do is read people fawning for Adam and how gorgeous he is. Don't post stuff in public forums if you don't want people to respond. Maybe try creating a blog and turning comments off. And, no one said anything about him being gorgeous. YOU did, tho. Maybe there truly is a thin line between love and hate...? Lol. I've been a member for 10 years. Yay.

Not sure about anyone else, but the only reason I posted how long I've been on here is because I only just started posting again after a few *years* hiatus, and didnt want people to think I was trolling.
