Although i didn't care much for it, i'm sad "Cold One" didn't do better. I'm sure this will catapult him back into top ten territory. If "Talladega" can't then nothing on that album will IMO

And written by Eric's BFF Marty Smith, so there's no bias at all. ;) (I'm a huge NASCAR fan and loathe 'Dega with every fiber of my being.)

I'm not surprised by this choice at all. I'm a little surprised that they didn't give "Cold One" a couple more weeks to see if it could stabalize, but this is probably a smart choice. With Christmas coming, it makes sense for them to want to have as big a hit as possible during prime shopping season.

I am not a NASCAR fan at all (it's actually the only sport I am not a fan of) but this song is the best on his current CD. This will be a huge hit and I could see it selling really well too. I wish it was released instead of "Cold One" because I think it would be the perfect time to be peaking right now (just as summer is ending as described in the song) but this is still going to be huge. It's my second fav Church song only behind "Springsteen."

Gee didn't see that one coming.
- No one ever
Excellent song. Production, melody, vocals, lyrics, all spot on. Arguably the top song of the year.

Amazing song, definitely a song of the year candidate for me. I'm not a NASCAR fan either, but I still connect to the story in the song. I think this will become the second biggest hit of his career, with Springsteen being first. If this doesn't go to #1 then country radio will have let everyone down.

How will you determine if this song is the second biggest hit of his career? Well there's sales. Springsteen went 2x platinum. Drink in my Hand and Smoke a Little Smoke went platinum. I think Talladega will sell better than those two, not Springsteen. Also airplay wise, this feels like it could be a multi-week #1. Lastly, this could become a big hit in the NASCAR community. That's a huge market and it could essentially become the signature song of the sport. This is a great song and it deserves all the success it will get.

How will you determine if this song is the second biggest hit of his career? Mostly by being subjective and just using my opinion. Sales are definitely a big factor, but also where he plays this song in his setlist 5 years from now. Usually bigger songs get played more at the end.

This is a no brainer to be a single, and the only question was what order in the sequence of singles it would arrive.
Personally, it ranks near the bottom of this album (bottom spot being claimed by the weird talking medley ) for me-I think it sounds like an obvious radio song since it has a singable radio hook but I enjoy the more unique songs on the album much more. Cold One was a gamble, but I love its unique production and clever lyrics. A Man Who Was Gonna Die Young is my favorite but is unlikely to be a single-even less radio friendly than the last single off of Chief; Loves Me Like Jesus Does (also my favorite off that album).

Very excited for this, he can make a great video and it'll likely be the song of the Chase if they do things right.
Also, it's just a really good song.

This song will be at least a Top 5. It'll most-likely be a #1 single and a Platinum one (or better) at that.

This might be stupid, but in the ad for "Talladega" in this week's Country Aircheck it says "here's to turn it up, slowin' down." I always thought it was "turnin' up." It makes more sense grammatically and it fits with "slowin' down": same tense. It certainly sounds like he's saying "turnin'" and the lyric pages say "turnin'". Just thought it was interesting.

^You are not alone zjames. I thought the same thing As for "Talladega," I also fall into the category of not being a Nascar fan. It's the one sport you will never, ever catch me watching. That said, I found the movie "Talladega Nights" absolutely hilarious (off topic, I know lol) and find this song great. It's going to be a huge hit for Eric.

Cars going around in circles for 3+ hours (and sometimes turning right on road courses) doesn't appeal to you?!!? Haha, I love Nascar, but I can see why it doesn't appeal to most, (Ricky Bobby was hilarious), good thing about this song is it fits both fans and those who aren't, a road trip with friends and growing up is what this is about. Love it.

It bugs me too, haha. Probably just a mistake on EMI's part. Anyway, this is at radio now, according to that ad, and it already got 10 early adds on today's Mediabase report. I really think that this will be a huge hit for Eric. I've been to a few Nascar races but they don't interest me much. I much prefer dirt track sprint car racing as I find it more exciting. But like Kentucky25 said, this song isn't really about Talladega, but rather about reflecting on growing up and good times with friends. I think this song will appeal to a lot of people whether they like Nascar or not. But being extra popular among the Nascar crowd (as I'm sure this will be) should be a huge added bonus.

This song has a Chesney-ish feel to it. Radio will eat it up! Eric may not like going mainstream but he sure is with this and it'll be his biggest hit. Maybe get an ACM nomination for Song/Single of the year!

This song hits so close to home for me.
So I'm almost 18 and just started my senior year of high school. A few of my best friends left for college in the past few weeks, and we cherished the hell out of our last summer. It really was "the summer before the real world started" for us. We spent so much time together, went to some concerts, and went to a couple NASCAR races.
We took two road trips to Pocono Raceway (not quite Talladega, but still) and just had some great times. The races were super exciting, but it's really about the people you share the experience with, as Eric conveys in the song. Those were some of my favorite memories.
Even with the great times we had, there was definitely an unspoken understanding. I know I wasn't the only one "thinking as that checkered flag was waving." We all "sure wanted to stay in" that moment, that state of mind. The fact that "time rolls on" creeped into all our minds. Maybe it was the "cars that go real fast" or how quickly the Pennsylvania "sun was breaking" that made us think about how quickly all the moments seem to go by. "Like those cars my thoughts kept rolling over" about what the future holds. I know my friends were doing the same thing. But the time will keep moving as quick as those cars.
"Sure would like to stay in Talladega" is one of my favorite lyrics. It completely relates to my life right now. It's not about staying in a great place. It's about wishing to stay in a certain state of mind with the people you care about and cherishing the moments.
I can't wait to hear this song on the radio "when the winds blow cold". It'll bring back some great, important memories and get me thinking all over again.

This is as safe as it gets. Reminds me of something Chesney would record.

Reminds me of something Chesney would record. Yes, Chesney might've recorded it but Church has also recorded songs like this in the past ("I Love Your Love The Most" "Drink In My Hand" and obviously "Springsteen").
