Yeah if you're looking for something like Joy or Explosions, you won't find anything like it on the regular edition. Scream It Out is relatively slower to others too, but it's still done as a stadium anthem.
One thing I definitely would not say is that it's not cohesive. Sonically, this is definitely her most cohesive album by default since the previous ones (especially Halcyon and HD) found her jumping back and forth between EDM flavors and sparse ballads. By refining the former into a more Pop direction and doing beat driven midtempos instead of the latter definitely makes it hold well as a unit. I'm excited to hear the Deluxe tracks today.

I think Halcyon and Lights tell a better "story" than this (Halcyon Days not so much). There are threads that you can come and go and connect sonically (bouncy pop songs, DJ Mustard-esque bangers, the choir-y backup vocals), but I haven't quite found what makes this tick yet. Giving it another listen now. The Intro into Aftertaste is going to be epic live, and I have faith she can translate these big anthems live. Halcyon was thick, and she slayed its songs live. Also Codes>>>

The snippets of the deluxe tracks are great. I Do What I Love is new for her, very brash. "...and if you're crying about your lover cause your lover is a dick, this'll get you over it"

My thoughts... - The Intro into Aftertaste was really something... then the song itself was just OK
- Something In The Way You Move / Keep On Dancin' - amazing pair
- On My Mind is one her weaker singles for me - I guess I can see why it was chosen, pretty inoffensive and catchy enough
- Around U is real highlight and a nice breather between OMM and...
- Codes / Holding On For Life... the former sounds too much like OMM and the latter is just average
- Love Me Like You Do is still incredible
- I like the slight change in production you get on Don't Need Nobody, but unsure how much I'll come back to it
- Don't Panic should be a single - getting CHVRCHES vibes from the verse and it carries really well into We Can't Move to This
- Army is decent in an epic/stadium/ballad/encore sort of way, but it doesn't reflect the album well as a second single - if that's been confirmed
- I've been into Lost and Found since it was released - great melody, love her lower register... am I allowed to say it reminds me a little of Mumford & Sons? One of my favourites.
- Bit indifferent to Devotion and Scream It Out
Besides the odd jump from L&F to Devotion, it's well sequenced and very cohesive, much more so than her previous albums. I'm of the opinion that journalists aren't quite sure how to review this - those reviewing it as they would a production line pop album are claiming "she doesn't have the songs" and I don't agree with that, there are some great songs here (Keep On Dancin' Around U, Don't Panic) and they are clearly Ellie's songs, curated for this album. I don't think it's a complete success and some of the material is a little dull (I think that about all her albums), but there's plenty here to love and it feels like a natural step for her. Edit: On the Deluxe - I Do What I Love is hilarious, Heal is gorgeous and Winner is... well, a winner.

Judging from the snippets 'Paradise', 'Scream it Out' and 'The Greatest' will be my favorites.
Also, lol at 'I Love What I Do'. :'(

This album sounds like one long song with a few mixups thrown in, and those tend to be the strongest cuts. 'Keep on Dancin', 'Don't Need Nobody' (!!!), 'Don't Panic', 'Devotion' (this came out of f**king nowhere???), and the bonus tracks are all really strong.
Edit: 'Don't Need Nobody' is my favorite. I keep coming back to it.

I love all the songs from the album, except The Greatest(so far). Don't Need Nobody absolutely the best!

Don't Need Nobody is great too. 23 songs is a lot to take in, so can't generate a developed consensus yet, but so far so good

Why does "Around U" remind me so much of "This Love" from The Veronicas?!

I have reached my breaking point with NY Targets. Unless you show up at 9 AM, you will NOT get a Target exclusive of pretty much any popular CD, except...5 Seconds of Summer. I was denied Target versions of Janet, Ellie, and Hozier. I am going to talk to my friend who works for the corporate HQ. Her division actually arranges these exclusives. I need to know why the NY stores get about 5 copies of these exclusive CDs. It's ridiculous. That said, I am really excited to dive into this tonight. I will have to scour the net for the Target-only tracks. Fortunately, there are only 2.

Lost and Found was produced and written by Max Martin and others. I now understand why it has slayed me since I listened to it for the first time

With the split in production it's clearly Greg Kurstin > Max Martin & Co. for me right now. The tribal nature of his productions just seem to work better for Ellie IMO.

Greg works really good with Ellie, they have the majority of the album. Max Martin'songs I would rank them as LMLYD>LaF>OMM>Army Still not into Army, not sure why it's the second single. There are so much better options

I think my favorites on first listen were Codes, Holding On for Life, Don't Need Nobody, Don't Panic, Army, Paradise, and the singles.

Is it just me or is this album really back-loaded? I'm still digging in, but can't seem to stop replaying the back half!

So even though I said I was indifferent to it, I have been listening to Devotion quite a lot... I lie.
Lost & Found is probably my favourite.
Overall agree on the Greg Kurstin thing, that whole tribal-electro thing is very much Ellie's thing.

"Codes" is easily the highlight of the new tracks for me, but I do think the ones we already heard probably edged it out. That said, while I like "Army," I really don't think it should be the second single. It just doesn't sound like a radio hit to me.

I wish the reviews for this were better because it is a really good album. The bonus tracks are better than some of the standard songs so I'm glad I paid the extra money. Does anyone have the Target version? If so, how are the bonus tracks?

@ her trolling EVERYONE by putting one of the best songs (not to mention one that could be a signature song for her) on the TARGET DELUXE. Two Years Ago is making my heart break. I wanted more of this on the standard but at least she gave it to us in some form.

I'm 8 songs in and I can say that she definitely delivered based on just those alone. On My Mind is my least favorite so far and even that's grown on me. Keep On Dancin' is so trippy, I could picture Britney Spears dabbling into something like that.

Okay, this album is probably my favorite one from her; I didn't expect her to release something stronger than her debut. My least favorite song on the album is probably "I Do What I Love" but I don't dislike it. I get why they're going with "Army" with that stadium anthem but there are much better songs on the album though Army is still a good song.
