I love Cool now as much as I did when it first came out. I loved it then because I was still shipping from Gwen and Tony Kanal. Do I need to Discipline(TM by Janet Jackson) you for shipping real people?

Supposedly Gwen filmed the video in Los Angeles over the weekend. My hope is they are probably working around The Voice's schedule to find a night where she can perform the song on the show and then put it on iTunes immediately afterwards.

It's definitely great that she can take advantage of the Voice to promote her single (and hopefully era) but I hope she's wary of putting all of eggs in that basket. Shakira and Usher both depended on The Voice and in the end it had an abysmal effect for either one of them.

Without the Voice, Shakira probably wouldn't have sold a quarter of the copies of her album that she did. As far as Usher, the material is just exceptionally weak.

Exposure on TV is going to help music if it doesn't resonate with the public. Those are great examples + throw in Ga/Xtina DWUW duet - had very little impact and they were counting on that version to revive the song, etc. A performance won't hurt, but zero guarantee that it's going to shoot to top of iTunes.

I'm so excited for this! Gwen was pretty much the first artist I was a huge supporter of here. I played both of her albums into the ground, especially the second.

TSE is precisely half a good album. LAMB is an entirely good album. TSE had her only tracks I disliked though with Yummy (sorry this one is just a mess for me), Don't Get it Twisted (ditto as Yummy), and the dreadful, abominable, crime on music that is Orange County Girl.

Since I was bored and excited thinking about this, decided to rank her solo catalog with grades and brief reasons why:
24. Orange County Girl: F (the desperate lyrics to create an "anthem", the weird nearly spoken and monotonous chorus, the cringe worthy my girls/boys say "la la la" bit. No. Just no Gwen.)
23. Breakin Up: D (Literally can never remember how this goes until I hear it again. It's in one ear, out the other.)
22. Don't Get It Twisted: D (Annoys the heck out of me. Not as much as OCG though and at least I can remember it unlike Breakin Up, so it's the lesser of those 3 evils.)
21. Yummy: C- (Interesting, but it's just too all over the place and those lyrics...oy.) 20. Harajuku Girls: C (The only song that could be called "filler" on LAMB. Not awful, but mainly it just goes on too long and not exactly the best idea to build lyrics around.)
19. Now That You Got It: C (It is kinda catchy, but also really really repetitive. Not much else to say about it really.)
18. Wind it Up: B- (I can appreciate her doing something different, and while I do think it works in some parts (mainly the infectious verses) it probably doesn't work on the whole. And it was 1000% the wrong choice as lead single.)
17. Serious: B (Took me awhile to click with this song, but eventually became one I stopped skipping and grew to like over the years.)
16. Long Way to Go: B+ (This more experimental track works much better than say something like Yummy on TSE. Probably cause Andre 3000 was still on top of his game at the time. Though the MLK bits have always struck me as a bit too odd.)
15. Crash: B+ (Yet another catchy dance pop LAMB track. I never did really get why they tried it as a single though...)
14. U Started It: B+ (Love how mellow and laid back this is to listen to, and it almost has a cool Christmas vibe with those bells.)
13. Hollaback Girl: B+ (Yeah I know some will scoff at this being so low, but bottom line is it's a novelty song and like any novelty song I really have to be in the mood to hear it or else it will just annoy me. When I'm in the mood though, it's super fun.)
12. The Real Thing: B+ (This one is subtle. You don't realize what an earworm it is until "don't go away..." won't go away in your head.)
11. Wonderful Life: B+ (Good, mellow song with a melancholy vibe to close out an uneven album. But at least she left us on a high note before her near decade long hiatus!)
10. Rich Girl: B+ (Super catchy, though perhaps can border on grating at times. Verses are actually my fav parts along with Eve's bits.)
9. Fluorescent: A- (Always liked this one more than most seem to. Definitely one of my favs from TSE and love the 80's vibe.)
8. Danger Zone: A- (Slick and unique. Ahead of its time too like a lot of LAMB.)
7. 4 in the Morning: A- (Really good TSE track, though my one slight gripe is that she sings the chorus so quick it's almost like a rap, and it can be jarring in the context of a ballad.)
6. Luxurious: A- (This song is somehow both ghetto urban and flaming gay at the same time and that's why I love it.)
5. The Sweet Escape: A (At one time it may have made a run for my #1 in her catalog. However years of radio literally abusing it to no end has definitely caused a bit of wear and tear for me.)
4. Early Winter: A (The underrated hidden gem of TSE and her solo career. Gorgeous ballad and should have been released for all the world to hear.)
3. Bubble Pop Electric: A+ (UH OH! In the backseat!<3<3<3)
2. What You Waiting For: A+ (Pretty much the epitome of what a dance pop song should be. And if it were any catchier it would probably be illegal.)
1. Cool: A+ (She took a tad of her No Doubt sound mixed it with her own sound, simple but poignant lyrics, and lush melodic synths and flourishes to make something truly special. A joy of a pop song.)

Harajuku Girls would be pretty close to the exact opposite of filler for me, but, as I mentioned on another thread, I have a pretty specific definition of filler. I agree on most of the other comments though except, at the time, I did enjoy Yummy and Don't Get it Twisted.

It's funny how differently a lot of people view Gwen's solo tracks in hindsight. I joined Pulse around the time "What You Waiting For?" came out and the initial reaction was not positive. A few years later dance pop became big and a lot of people started to appreciate "WYWF?" more as "ahead of its time" or "underrated". The video for this song was also hugely influential as we began to see more abstract and stylistic videos break through from Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Both the song and the video remain one of my favorite things she has ever done. Good job Gwen and Linda Perry!

What You Waiting For? is my official hype song. I loved it and the PERFECT! video that accompanied it. The extended version especially with Jimmy Iovine revealing studio sessions before it was known all who she had worked with with the random phone calls.

WYWF literally BOGGLES my mind why it wasn't a SMASH (or even moderate hit). I still remember hearing it for the first time, driving around the Bronx feeling like I was a superstar while I listened to it. Meanwhile I was 1. In the passenger seat 2. next to my dad 3. getting picked up from high school 4. with my ghetto ass Jansport backpack full of textbooks.
THE POWER

I'm glad I was always a supporter of WYWF Loved it since I heard it and got super upset at its flopping. None has mentioned her feature role in Moby's South Side. I love that one too! I do think her TSE ballads are awesome

I mean I can get why some would like Yummy. For me it's like a failed experiment though. And like I said, Harajuku Girls just mainly goes on too long for me and I usually end up skipping it before its over hence my comments on it being the closest to "filler" on LAMB. Sorry, but I stand firm on my opinions of Breakin Up and Don't Get it Twisted though. I can't remember anything about Breakin Up as I type this, despite the fact I force listened to it more than a few times.
