Which for ANY OTHER ARTIST (outside Miranda, Blake, Luke, FGL, or Aldean) would render the song a track that'd struggle to hit the Top 20, to say nothing of Top 10 or Top 5. That being said, I don't think this one will land anywhere BUT #1 or #2.
Agreed. You people are reading my mind today. Interesting comments about this song being more or not as much Christian music as Jesus Take The Wheel. I may not be very religious but for some reason the music or music video or something about JTTW made that song sound more country than this one so I guess the Jesus phrasing in the song didn't impact as much. I did like that song a lot. I don't know if that makes sense. I guess it just boils down to the feeling a person gets when they hear a song.

I love this a lot. Carrie sounds great, the lyrics are and country radio needs a song with a Christian message. Thank you Carrie.

Does anyone else kind of notice the subtle electronic influence in the beginning of the song, or is it just me? Anywho, I finally got around to listening to this. I'm not a big Carrie fan nor am I religious, but on first listen I thought this was pretty decent. She has a heck of a voice on this song, and the production is pretty unique too. For some reason I can't see this going #1 on the charts, I feel it's going to be too religious for today's world to warrant 8,000+ spins, but I could be wrong. This isn't the type of song I can listen to over and over again, but I definitely thought it was pretty good on first listen.

Although I'm a Christian, I just can't get on board with this song. Carrie sounds beautiful, but there is something about the melody and the chorus that doesn't quite seem to match the rest of the song (the "awkward" description was spot on), and I wouldn't classify it as very "country" sounding (for the record, I don't consider most of what is popular on country radio these days to be very country sounding either).
I will probably go to the top since it's Carrie Underwood, but it's going to sound so strange amongst songs like "Burnin it Down" and "Hope you get Lonely Tonight". I for one don't like the message of said songs, so maybe playing a song like this after one of those will get people thinking...either way, I like the intent that Carrie had with this song, just don't really love the song.

"What We Ain't Got." "Like A Cowboy." "Drink A Beer." "I Hold On" "Kiss You Tonight." "Compass." ALL of these are songs which have substance and are/were played by radio a lot the past 12 months. Perhaps a better phrase would've been "hearing Carrie Underwood on the radio again" would've been better? (I get that you too.) ;)

I like this well enough. She sounds great on it, the production it pretty good, especially the banjo. I just feel like there's something missing from it lyrically. Don't get me wrong it's better than a lot of the stuff that's been big over the last year or so but for a song that seems so personal to her there's not a lot of lyrical details that tie it to her. I'd give this an easy B rating.

I don't see it as sending a message. Maybe 'message' wasn't the right word. Perhaps Christian undertones? Right now there aren't any songs on the country chart that even connect to religion at all. Religion and faith are such big parts of country music and it's nice to have a song that highlights those themes.

It's talking about being baptized for pete's sake.

How many weeks until Carrie (SITW) passes Garth Brooks (PLP) on the charts? :o Week 1. Carrie has a Clear Channel/Cumulus deal. She'll debut higher than Garth Brooks on Billboard.

From tonight's BCU:
Looking ahead to next week’s Country Airplay chart, Carrie Underwood’s “Something in the Water” (19/Arista Nashville) should make a significant splash. Released to radio at midnight ET on Sept. 29 (and iTunes the same day), the song ranked as the format’s most-played title for the day by 4 p.m. ET (when the Billboard Country Update went to press), with 6.5 million impressions in its first 16 hours. The track previews Underwood’s Greatest Hits: Decade #1, due Dec. 9.
That's pretty impressive. I figured it would start out big, but not quite that big.
As for the song, I don't love the lyrics, but her vocals are excellent, as usual. It definitely stands out in today's radio climate, and I hope that doesn't work against it as it gets higher up the charts. I'm predicting that it will keep her top 2 streak alive, but we'll have to see.

I wasn't criticizing you. I just thought you implied that Carrie sat down to write a song to send people a Christian message and I don't agree with that. I think she just wrote a story about what she knows and believes, which I respect, and doubt there was an intentional purpose to preach to people. Personally, I never think country radio or other "needs a song with a Christian message". If I'm wrong about her intent, I'll be irritated that she's trying to send me a message :).

I would have much preferred a cover of Jeffrey Steele's "Something In The Water".

I agree that the song is a story song and a great one. The use of first-person throughout the whole song establishes that and the closeness of the subject matter to Carrie. But I think there can be different story songs. For instance "I Got A Car" is a great story song. It tells a love story and a car's role in it. Is there a mesage? Not a clear one. "Something in the Water" tells the story of a person who finds new life through baptism and a renewed faith in God. I don't care if Carrie wasn't trying to convey a pro-Christian message. The message is still received. The great story that Carrie tells conveys the power of faith and renewal and new strength. With a story as rooted in religion and tradition, it's hard not to hear the message of the song whether Carrie wanted it or not.

Not a Carrie fan here, and I also don't like preachy songs. But my favorite songs of Carrie's have been ballads/inspirational like JTTW and Temporary Home.
This one isn't a stand out lyrically for me but it has a nice sound and will be a nice respite from all the Bro constantly assaulting me on my Country Radio. I like it.

Week 1. Carrie has a Clear Channel/Cumulus deal. She'll debut higher than Garth Brooks on Billboard. Garth did too, though. Yes, Garth did, but that doesn't mean Carrie won't pass him. I agree completely with kml567 here. Garth debuted at #19 with 20.5 million in audience. In week 2, he slid back to #23 and only had 12.7 million. Last Monday, in week 3, he rose back up to #21 but still had only 13.3 million. I can't access tonight's chart at the moment (link isn't working) but Garth is unlikely to be any higher than #21 and 14 million. Carrie is on pace to score nearly 8.5 million impressions in just her first 24 hours at radio. Obviously the iHeartMedia "once an hour" event will end this evening but she'll be ahead of Garth on the Billboard building chart by Thursday already, if not sooner. Any chart watchers care to make early predictions as to where it'll rank this week on the airplay chart? Based on that tidbit from Billboard that someguy posted, it looks like Carrie should have about 8.5 million in audience by the end of the day today on Billboard (which will probably be 9-10 mil on tomorrow morning's Mediabase update). But it's too tough to know how high this will debut yet, mostly because the rest of the week obviously won't shake out like today, since SITW is getting hourly spins at iHeartRadio (formerly Clear Channel) today but it won't get that same amount of spins from Tuesday through Sunday. We'll know a lot more on Wednesday morning. I might take a guess then and try to specifically pinpoint where she'll debut for next week's chart, but for right now all I can say is that top 20 on Billboard looks like a lock.

After listening to this a bunch (you don't want to know the actual number ) I can say this is easily one of my favorite Carrie songs ever. Songs like this are the reason Carrie is my favorite. This is so powerful and is going to be so refreshing to have on country radio.

This is vocally flawless. It is so good to hear actual vocals on full display with all the crap vocalist getting played. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy a lot of the songs on radio but a good many of the artist out now just aren't good vocalist. Carrie sings circles around everyone.

Sorry to any of y'all who don't like the new single. Not only is it Carrie's most touching song since JTTW and Wasted (those are two of my favorite Carrie songs, along with Just A Dream), it is the culmination of all of her talents and deserves to be her signature song. I want Grammys for it as well. s**t almost made me break down like a baby, especially at the end. I am deeply religious and I respect Carrie so much for embracing that.

Like others have said, her vocals can tend toward being too overpowering & shouty at times for me, and I agree with that assessment here. I would have liked her to back off a bit and add more nuance, but overall it's a minor complaint for me as I love the song. I agree with this. But that (backing off) rarely happens with Mark Bright as producer. I've actually come to love Carrie's soft voice more than her infamous belting. It's just so angelic-sounding... wish I could hear more of it.
