Godsmack - "Something Different"

Looks to be the second single from 1000HP. It's now under cool new music.

This was easily the best song on the album when it came out, so I'm glad they chose this one. This is much better than 1000hp, though I didn't hate that song like many on here did. I give this song a solid 7.5/10.

I do see the grunge influenced riffs and overall sound, but I think it brings something different to the table, not like "1000hp" which was trite and hella generic.

Yeah, because pop and indie acts make so much better quality music. Some of that stuff isn't even "generic", it's just awful. I'll take old rock bands any day. :)

Nope, I like a good 60-65% of what's on Active, and the ones I don't particularly like I don't see as "garbage".

These numbers were routine for me regarding active as well until about 2010. Used to always like about 2/3 of the active chart and about 3/4 of the alternative chart. The big difference is the alt numbers remained the same for me while the active ones fell to about 1/3

Well, I think alternative would benefit from playing active stuff that makes sense. Play Seether (probably the last "post-grunge" band aside from maybe Shinedown with anything 'alternative' about them) a bit more, as well as stuff from bands like Chevelle, and rotate in stuff like Young Guns, Royal Blood (I don't like them, but they are certainly 'alternative', besides, their presence would help out songs like "I'm Only Joking"), Islander, Volbeat, etc.

IMO, a typical alternative top 40 should include

20-25/40 pure alternative/alt-first bands/songs (current trend stuff)
10-15/40 veteran alternative acts that MAKE SENSE and are by definition still alternative (Chevelle, Seether, Linkin Park, Jimmy Eat World, AFI, Depeche Mode, U2) & active crossovers that MAKE SENSE (Young Guns, Royal Blood, You Me At Six, A Day To Remember, Islander, etc)

^^^ The combination that results in 35/40 is determined by the fluctuating quality of either group at any given time

5/40 the really big pop and active hits that might not really be alternative, but are so popular on their main format that they'll probably appeal to a good number of alt listeners, and where they peak on alt is dependent on how they are received by the alt majority (Magic!, Echosmith, American Authors, Pretty Reckless, Volbeat, Nothing More, Starset, etc).

Stay away from the Nickelbacks, Pop Evils, TOADs, A7Xs, Slipknots, Five Finger Death Punches of the world, because none of these bands have anything 'alternative' about them (The metal bands used to, but their sound has become so 'mainstream hard-rock' in order to fit in on active radio that they've all for the most part lost whatever little alternative definition they had. They CAN be part of the aforementioned 5/40 group if applicable though (examples: Hail To The King, Shepherd Of Fire).

So yeah, this is close, but there are a couple too many "C" songs, and we just don't need that. Like there's no reason Adelitas Way or Sixx: A.M. should be on alternative, replace those two with the 2 best poissible songs from the A or B categories, as they still have room.

That brings us to the back to the 2005-2010 problems where bands like Godsmack and Saliva who don't belong rob bands like Interpol and Cold War Kids of spins. In today's chart, you'd have to include songs like "Messed Up World", "1000HP", "Drown", "Edge Of A Revolution", "Wrong Side Of Heaven", and "Beautiful" to fill your quota. Kepp the purely active stuff mostly on active, I think even you'd have to see with the above 2011 example or how close it resembles my proposed breakdown, that's the optimal alternative chart.

I'll give Shadows in the Dark my sympathy in disagreeing with me because I get that he listens to the radio alot and doesn't have an active station in his market, and if he did I'm sure he wouldn't care nearly as much about alternative. Still though Shadowscorp, I'm sure you'd be more than happy to settle for the idea I proposed if it meant moving away from what it is now haha.

Ok, so fine, 7/10 is good enough. I'd take those other 3 and split them so 1 is core and 2 are new.
