I had really low expectations for this song after reading all the bitching in this thread. I totally disagree - I love the energy, and will be rooting for this one to succeed. Same here. I am not a Lady A fan-have only liked songs here and there like Run To You, Hello World and American Honey. I never understood the success of Bartender, kind of meh for me since it sounded like a lot of other Lady A melodies and the vocals weren't great. This one is no masterpiece, especially lyrically obviously; but I like the sound and it is a good energetic one to bop my head to.

After hearing this song, I guess it's safe to say that I'm not a fan of this band anymore. In my opinion, the lyrics are superficial, the melody is generic, and its just overall forgettable. I haven't loved any singles since "American Honey" (before that I loved everything), kind of liked a few singles from "We Owned the Night" era, and the only song I liked on Golden was an album cut ("It Ain't Pretty").
Maybe I'm alone in this, but it seems like Lady Antebellum is trying so hard to be cool and appeal to the younger fans (especially with Downtown and Bartender), and given that their catalog was so strong in the past ("Hello World" is an example of how good they can be), its hard for me to like such shallow offerings. Don't get me wrong, a laid-back song is good every now and then, but when it's all you are offering, then it gets very old, very fast.

Not feeling this one, and I didn't care much for "Bartender" either, so I'm a little skeptical about how this album will sound now. I loved Golden (their best album to date, imo), but I'm fairly disappointed with the first two offerings from 747.

I haven't listened to this yet, but I see "Hello World" getting brought up a lot as an example of how good these guys used to be, and in my opinion, that's one of their least-strongest offerings. "Hello World" seems rather trite and superficial to me. It just feels like they were trying way too hard to be poetic and profound on that one.
The Golden album showcased a great balance of nostalgic ballads and midtempos (Goodbye Town, Nothin' Like The First Time, Long Teenage Goodbye, All For Love) and carefree fun songs (Downtown), as well as a few strong songs that dealt with heartbreak (Better Off Now, It Ain't Pretty). For me it was easily their strongest album after a very disappointing Own The Night album.
I would certainly use "Love Don't Live Here" as an example of the strong material they had in their early days, but definitely not "Hello World".

"747" is definitely NOT "Golden." To me it's more of an amalgam of their first two albums without their trademark 'sweeping epic ballad' like "Need You Now," "Heart Of The World" or even "Hello World" or "I Run To You."

It's likely because UMG had Eric Church going for adds today, Dierks goes for adds on the 6th, and Eric Paslay on the 13th. You will hardly ever see a Capitol artist and an MCA, Mercury, or EMI artist going for adds on the same day unless the situation is unavoidable. It's the same with other labels too. Sony won't send a Kenny Chesney single and a Jake Owen single for adds on the same day, Warner won't send a Blake Shelton single for adds the same day as a Brett Eldredge single, etc. The 20th does seem a little far away (when it comes to the typical 'gap' between the 1st single falling off the chart and the 2nd single going for adds) but I am sure that "Freestyle" will get sent to radio soon, probably on the 6th, and of course "Bartender" will still be getting a lot of airplay over the next few weeks.

I feel like Lady A is quickly turning into what Rascal Flatts have become. Good songs, but no real meaning behind any of the material. Funny you say that...I've listened to this song three times and each time I keep thinking that it sounds like an album track from Rascal Flatts. I was just going to post the same thing. This sounds like a RF b-side. I listened tothe whole album on the way to work tonight and I did like the sound of the album. I loved 747. I listened through the last album once and never listened to it again but I will give this a few spins.

Wow, interesting. I couldn't imagine Lady A singing either of those songs, though. IMO, Kimberly brought the spunk to BDT that no one else could.

I never cared for how heavy-handed the message of that song was. Their first album still takes the cake for me. I won't list all of my favorites, but Things People Say is as good as it gets. This song isn't earth changing, but I do like it on first listen. It definitely sounds like a song Rascal Flatts would cut, though the production here is far superior to anything RF has done in years. I'm not all that excited about the album on first listen, but at least they've chosen wisely with the 2 singles. What mystifies is that after the success of Compass, absolutely nothing on 747 sounds remotely close to that song.

I'm not feeling this song at all. I get that they're probably just trying to capitalize with what's "in" on country radio right now (I assume) but I think "747" would've been a better choice heading into the fall.

I've been a dwindling Lady A fan since their "Need You Now" album was nowhere as great as their debut. "Own The Night" was terrible other than a couple songs, and "Golden" was an all-around snoozefest that I couldn't listen to more than two or three times before giving up. However, this new album is fantastic. Still doesn't touch the sound that their first album had, but its their best effort since, in my opinion. There are still some flaws in it ("Damn, You Seventeen" - I wish they'd give up on this high school nostalgia thing already), but also some of the best offerings I've heard since their first album ("Lie With Me", "She Is").
I didn't mind this song much before listening to the full album, but now I'm extremely puzzled as to why this is a single. It actually kind of reminds me of something Rascal Flatts would sing today (which is nowhere close to being a complement). I still don't hate this, but there were so many better options for the second single - namely "She Is" and "Lie With Me", but also "Long Stretch of Love", "Sounded Good at the Time", "747", or "Falling For You".
I just hope this does well enough that there will be a 3rd (and 4th) single from this great album.

Saw Friday where estimate wk 1 album sales was 67k to 72k. That is bad, even worse than Golden.

Everyone's album sales have gone south. Blake also had a significant drop in sales (only pulling out 90k....less than half of his previous album). We saw the same thing happen to Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw, etc. People don't buy albums anymore as more people stream music for free now.
BTW, I'm really disappointed with "Freestyle" after the wonderful "Bartender". It does sound like a bad Rascal Flatts album cut. I'm hoping they pick another single.

Heard this today for the first time... and I'm speechless. How on earth has "Freestyle" been pulled as the follow up single to "Bartender". It is just a total mess; and I'm really curious to see how radio reacts to it. Went through the whole album in like 20 minutes; that basically says it all. So sorry to say that, but this offering will not elevate them to the next level.

I'm surprised at how quickly this has grown on me. I was pretty underwhelmed by it when I first heard it, but I hope this becomes a big hit now. It's been stuck in my head for a few days and I like it more every time I listen to it.

I still quite like this. I'm surprised by the Rascal Flatts comparisons in this thread. I still hear more Little Big Town, especially in the chorus and verse. Though I'm thinking more melodically and vocally though I do guess production seems more RF than LBT. He sounds surprisingly good. He does have a nice tone.

I'm surprised that this hasn't made the charts yet. I know it's still a week away from adds date, but I would've thought that a new Lady Antebellum single following a #1 hit would have charted before it officially went for adds. It is #1 in New & Active thought with 571k, so I do expect it to debut next week.
It still is probably my least favourite Lady A single, but I do get why they released it, especially in this current climate.

Thanks for passing along. Maybe the video is entertaining for those who know who the guy is but I have no clue who he is and found the video to be completely unfunny. I do still like the song though.

What the hell did I just watch? That has to be one of the dumbest videos I've ever seen. What was Lady A thinking? There's a reason I usually chose to not watch music videos, and this is the perfect example right here.

Yeah that was a terrible video, and i can't imagine it doing anything for them really. I don't have high expectations for this song, and I fear another flame out might be coming, much like "Goodbye Town".

That man is Nathan Barnatt playing his character Keith Apicary. Apparently he's popular on YouTube and has been in music videos for Kimberly Cole and Flo Rida. He was on the cover of L.A. Weekly in 2012. He's been in some stuff on Comedy Central. That's all from Wikipedia by the way, I didn't know who that was either. This is a weird choice for a music video. If you don't know who the man/character is, the video is just painfully unfunny. I agree with dm2081 in not thinking this will be very successful. I think the song is decent, but I think it will peak somewhere around the lower teens, upper Top 10. "Lie With Me", "She Is", and "Sounded Good At The Time" all seemed like better choices to follow-up "Bartender".

If they wanted something upbeat still I would have released 747. It's not a ballad, but still has that signature Lady A sound to it. I really hope it becomes a single at some point. Lay With Me would be another good choice too.

I heard this for the first time yesterday. I honestly couldn't even tell that was Charles because the phrasing's so different. I thought they'd let Dave sing lead for a change!
Not a bad song though. Clearly an attempt at loosening up their sound.

This sure isn't acting like a top 10 single right now. Sales are embarrassingly low for a band as popular as Lady Antebellum (not even in the top 1500 on iTunes all-genre) and now airplay is starting to flounder, too. "Freestyle" has only gained 192 spins and 1.253 million audience impressions during the past Mediabase tracking week. I could see this peaking as low as just outside the top 20 and as high as #15, but top 10 would be a shocker. I haven't heard any tracks on Lady A's album other than the two singles, but right now this is looking similar to the Golden era. Just when it seemed Lady A had found their fan base on iTunes again after the success of "Bartender," their next single just totally flies under the radar. It's quite possible this was just a bad single choice...I don't know. I can say that "Freestyle" still has fewer Spotify plays than "Lie with Me," so maybe Capitol just chose the next single too quickly and should have waited until after the album's release to evaluate all the choices (same deal as "Small Town Throwdown" and "Dust").
