The line goes "My beard a rustling, cold towel. And a dirty hat pulled low across my face". And yes she does sing that line. While I'm not 100% certain I have the right lyric either , I'm fairly certain its not "cold towel" . LOL And ugh! I usually don't mind a female singing from a males perspective but that particular line about facial hair always throws me.... "Cold towel" is the lyric and Kimberly does say it in the studio version. AZ Lyrics

No. No its not. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A7iuQF_tAcHeres the line Tammy Wynette did. Still tells the story and no need in the narrator breaking out the "Nair". The shadows creak in the autumn winds That make me draw inside myself in silence Cross legged night I sit and watch The endless chase of leaves across my yard And layin' down my hair brush I lean back within my window seat and find That you're moving on the back roads by the rivers of my mem'ry Ever smiling ever gentle on my mind

Okay no I'm confused. I looked at another site and it said the lyric was "Cold Cowl". But Kimberly says "Cold Towel", or maybe Kimberly was trying to say "Cowl" and it came out like "Towel". But then Glen says "Pile" in that video. I can't believe this stupid lyric is bothering me that much but it is.

I was surprised at how fast the tempo was for the studio version (thanks for posting that Fanofctrymusic), but I still enjoyed it more than the live version. Would be shocked to see it do well in Radio however. I understand releasing it since that documentary/movie is coming out, but still don't think it's strong enough for radio. As for TBT, I am still hoping that Kim Perry goes solo someday and ditches her goofy looking bros. She's the true star of that outfit and can sing sing sing. Just sayin' Neil and Reid are crushed!

I actually heard this on the radio twice this morning . Not a bad cover at all , though I didn't really notice it being much faster (if at all) then the original. Two slight complaints would be her voice sounds really filtered (for lack of a better word) and she almost sounds out of breath here and there. Granted , it was an AM station so that may explain the filtered sound. In any case , I hope this can become a sizable hit as it was always my favorite Glen Campbell song.

The preview pic from an online sheet music company shows the lyric as "roughning coal pile."

I see we are still hashing out the lyrics. Here they are:
Lyrics for Gentle On My Mind By Glen Campbell
It's knowin' that your door is always open
And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleepin' bag
Rolled up and stashed behind your couch
And it's knowin' I'm not shackled
By forgotten words and bonds
And the ink stains that have dried upon some line
That keeps you in the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
That keeps you ever gentle on my mind
It's not clingin' to the rocks and ivy
Planted on their columns now that bind me
Or something that somebody said because
They thought we fit together walkin'
It's just knowing that the world
Will not be cursing or forgiving
When I walk along some railroad track and find
That you're movin' on the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
And for hours you're just gentle on my mind
Though the wheat fields and the clothes lines
And the junkyards and the highways come between us
And some other woman's cryin' to her mother
'Cause she turned and I was gone
I still might run in silence
Tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me till I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see
You walkin' on the back roads
By the rivers flowin' gentle on my mind
I dip my cup of soup back from a gurglin' cracklin' cauldron
In some train yard
My beard a rustlin' coal pile
And a dirty hat pulled low across my face
Through cupped hands 'round a tin can
I pretend to hold you to my breast and find
That you're waitin' from the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
Ever smilin', ever gentle on my mind

Well Kimberly still says "Towel" in the remake. Or "Cowl" if I heard her wrong. But it seems that's not the correct lyric. So why is it different? Just a massive mystery.

I have to say, much prefer roughening coal pile to rustlin' coal pile.
The one sounds sort of scruffy, a bit shabby-genteel. The other sounds like something is living and wriggling around in his beard. :o

I think this is a phenomenal cut for them. Probably one of my favorite performances by Kimberly. I love the rhythm and the quaintness of the track. Very different from any recent release.

This is easily my favorite from Band Perry since their debut album. Love the source material, love the plucky, vintage meets modern performance. I have no clue what radio will do with it - it's the Band Perry so hopefully at least top 20, but it's nice to see a song of real substance released.

I'll be curious if this gets treated anything close to a real single. It has a good sound, but for me it's a little too fast and has almost no emotion.

When I first heard this I wasn't sure how it would work on the radio. I've been hearing this quite a bit lately and I have to say, it's such a welcome reprieve (for a song at least) from the louder more in your face production and instrumentation of many of the songs out there right now.
Even though it's a special release for them, it's one of my favorite songs they've put out.

This week was their first offical add week and it did OK. If it's more than a Top 20 hit, I'd be surprised.

It's doing extremely well early in smalltown, small market radio, which makes sense given the traditional nature of the song. If the majors come through (which is the risk here in my opinion) this could be a welcome surprise biggie. As a listener, it's a refreshing change on my radio; and as a radio music director, our listeners are calling early with the same sentiments to express. Hope this one pans out.

I absolutely LOVE this version and it certainly ranks as one of the very best cover versions of any song regardless of genre that I've ever heard, and I'm not about to quibble about whether or not tempo-wise it is or is not faster than the orginal--the song itself is a standout, and Kimberly definitely appears to really enjoying herself in interpreting the lyrics.
I would certainly love for it to be a smash, but given the huge percentage of top 40 PDs who who have also been assigned to program their local country stations within the same cluster in recent years courtesy of their bean-counting conglomerate owners, the prospect of many of them failing to add this song solely because the original was released in 1967 when I was in the 10th grade would lead many of them to feel that millions of today's country listeners won't like it or really appreciate it.
This is an extremely reverential homage to Glen's impeccable original as well as to John Hartford's top-notch songwriting chops, and there's no doubt in my mind that the band members took extensive steps and care to treat it with respect and appreciation, and on that account I'd give them an A+.
However, I also vividly remember as do many of you Martina's equally reverential and similarly impeccable cover version of another towering country classic entitled 'Rose Garden', which infuriated the hell out of me because it barely made the top 20 even though she undoubtedly took great pains as did TBP with this flawless rendition to treat that country standard with equal reverence, yet the format's musical gatekeepers shunned it for no remotely intelligent reason.
Ideally, this would rise to #1 next year and become an enormous hit; I do have my fingers crossed that such will be the case.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with remakes; Brooks & Dunn took a 1973 top 10 hit at top 40 radio, remade it, and wound up with 1996's #1 country single of the year with 'My Maria', and Reba's cover version of the two week top 40 charttopper 'The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia' by Vicki Lawrence (also from 1973) was a top 15 country hit for her in 1992.
It would be a shame if 'Gentle On My Mind' didn't become a smash for one of my very favorite country artists, but given the underwhelming product currently passing as 'country' music currently on the air, color me apprehensive.

So this song is getting "lots of major market early airplay" and "doing extremely well early in smalltown, small market radio"? Well then, those medium market laggards need to get with the program! ;) In seriousness, I agree with drock89, kw9461 slowmo & Marv about how refreshing this cover is as a single on country radio, and I think that it does a far better job of showcasing what makes the Band Perry a distinctive country talent than the big rockers that they favored on Pioneer. I would love for this to break out in a way that inspired a "reverse- Pioneer" on their next album...I think the band has talked about its upcoming album focusing on tempo, fun & live energy, but a mid-course change in direction (as happened on their previous album) that at least aims for energy from a rootsier production and vocal approach would be most welcome. In the meantime, I'm really pleased that they still have a performance like this in them (not that they would have lost the ability, but I'm glad that The Band Perry still has the will for and interest in something like this).

TBP is just as comfortable and happy sitting in the floor in a circle, just the three of them playing acoustically and singing, as they are on stage with a full band rocking a packed house. They can play many kinds of music and play them well, and they enjoy every minute of it.

Really wish this EP was available as a CD since i dislike buying digitally. The Glen Campbell song I'm Not Gonna Miss You is just phenomonal to say the least. this cover sounds fantastic to me and really balances out their softer side with their rockin side

"Gentle on My Mind" isn't in the top 1500 on iTunes. I realize that this is more of a traditional release and the single isn't even receiving much airplay quite yet, but shouldn't The Band Perry be a name with enough recognition that it'd be getting more sales at this point? I'm not sure how well this single will do on radio. It'll be an interesting experiment, but I'd be surprised to see this make the top 10 on the charts.

Most people probably don't even know it's a single yet, kind of similar to Zac Brown Band with "All Alright". This song certainly won't be a big digital seller, but in enough weeks it will probably crack the top 50 on iTunes Country chart.

I don't think this will do much (Top 20 at best) , but this is very refreshing and a nice change of pace for The Band Perry. They put their personal touch on the track.

Ain't no way this song will be a big hit on "Country Radio". They don't like playing Real Country songs. Hell they don't even know what that is anymore.
