^No, there was a major backlash. I had a bunch of friends bitching on Facebook about having an unwanted album on their iTunes.
Apple actually gave out instructions on how to get the album off of consumer's iTunes!

Also I have read only one review where the album has got more than 3 stars.
This has been, without a doubt, a bad move for them regarding their projects in the future.

Any sort of backlash I've seen has been directed at Apple for automatically putting the album in everybody's iCloud instead of having you have to go to iTunes to actively redeem it. I honestly don't think it has hurt U2 or their brand in the least. And any publicity is good publicity.
Like I said, the band and their label don't care about the sales of this album or else they wouldn't have signed a deal that gave it away for free for a month.

At this point, it would take a major, major scandal to tarnish U2's image/brand.

Even with the popularity of Frozen, can't see Menzel's album opening with as much as 200K. I'm surprised she didn't rework some of the Frozen songs for the album.

If it was promoted and priced properly they could do it

It'd be interesting to know how many units were sold of other product. Just because a few whiners complained about the instant download, will hardly tarnish U2. If anything, it generated MORE publicity. I listened to it, didn't like it and banished it to cloud, which took just a few seconds. Oh, and I have everything from BOY to BOMB - so I know U2.

Kanye's numbers seem low and while I can totally see it, he's one of the few artists who can get away with being a complete and utter asshole yet still be recognized for being a reliably good artist. With that said, he'll need some strong support and good reviews or something to back his new album up before it comes out.
I'm also surprised Garth Brooks' numbers are so low. I know he's been away from music for more than a decade but country fans are pretty reliable when buying albums. Isn't this new one a big deal?

^Not when your first single sucks.
Please remember these figures are not set in stone. Some will surprise, some will disappoint...
AND...
HITS told us 400k for both Lady GaGa and Katy Perry last year. Both came in under 300k...

It was the non fans of U2 who complained. Bill Werde formerly of Billboard tweeted all about the backlash on Twitter for days. I think labels learned not to download directly into people's iTunes. Send an email and let the iTunes user click download.

I mean, Sharon Osbourne's letter to the band alone was featured on five different news sources I watch.

It's totally possible for Taylor. She's just as popular as she ever was, and her marketing team is gonna put out a bunch of promo / itunes singles or some other for of expensive marketing campaign. She's entering fully into pop now, I'm predicting a huge push for this.

I think Taylor can do it, but it may take some clever marketing/pricing on the part of Big Machine to seal the deal Which doesn't seem like they're doing this time around. Rumor has it that there won't be any promo singles either? sigh.

Nice prediction for Taylor -1 Million. If Taylor does get 1 Million for a third time, this will be awesome. The lowest I could see this opening is 800K-850K. Taylor has the hype for her new album and "Shake It Off" is one of Taylor's biggest singles of her career. If They promote the album right,Magazine covers,Promo appearances etc. Taylor could open very strong.
Not on the list althrough is Rihanna,Whatever happened to the supposed album she was going to release this fall. This might be Rihanna's longest break ever in her career.

They're underestimating Wayne I think. This is the last installment of Tha Carter series, so there's built in hype to this. Not expecting opening numbers like last time, but I won't be surprised if he broke 700k with this.
Taylor is a wait and see situation. They're obviously going to push it hard, but at the same time, fact is that she is not promoting to a part of the audience that bought her previous albums.
FGL is too low. If Luke Bryan opened with over 500k last year (and it wasn't even Q4 yet I think), they should be able to at least do over 400k. They're one of the hottest breakthroughs of the last few years and have major momentum, along with a big audience, going into this.
Lowballing Garth too, he could put up big numbers since he appeals to an older audience, one that he has been courting publicly again as he has stepped back into the limelight.
Everything else is about right. I love Kanye, but his celebrity and profile shouldn't be confused with the public actually liking him. He's been in the news for pretty much everything but his work for the past year, and his dates didn't sell well. If he's able to get a big single though, that's all he's going to need to guarantee a success on the album front imo. 500k seems fine for Kendrick.

But historically in the digital age pop listeners buy more singles than albums. Outside of sales being down and country not backing taylors new song the natural decline will make it tough. DHeing her lastly era some were turned off by her constant need to use her failed relationships as a marketing tool I noticed a little backlash from that. We are never getting back together is a better song. I really don't see 1m for taylor...I think she will come close like 800k/900k which is still amazing. I want her to sell 2.3 million in 5 weeks and snatch that #1 female album Susan Boyle style at the 11th hour.

Garth's numbers seem accurate since he's not using iTunes.
I feel like Wayne has lost a lot of momentum. His current single can't even break the Top 50 on the Urban airplay charts, and there just seems to be much less hype for TC5 then there was for TC4.
Wasn't expecting that Kendrick prediction, but I could see it happening.
Didn't even know Kanye and Foo Fighters had an album coming out.
I'm not sold on Taylor opening with a million this time. She's still incredibly popular obviously, but this album isn't being marketed to the country audience, so I'm sure some sales will be lost.
FGL and Jason seem accurate.
Don't know what to think with 1D. They still sell well, but their new single has had fairly low reception so far, and I just feel like there's less hype this time around.
I see Nicki selling ~300k, Eminem/Shady Records selling ~250k, U2 selling ~200k, Nickelback selling ~150k, and T.I. selling ~100k. Idina probably won't debut high but her sales will be consistent.

Regarding Taylor opening with 1m, it's definitely possible because Justin did it last year and the general decline in sales doesn't necessarily show in first week sales. I highly doubt that she could sell over 3 million in total though.

The album will pass 2 million with ease , and as long as the next 3 or so singles are strong she should be fine , even if it doesn't hit the 4 million red did

I think 1D will sell very well through the holidays but this may be there last Huge selling year without a huge hit. They put out cd's so frequently and their main audience is growing up fast.

After their first or second album, I remember they signed a 3 or 4 album deal. The frequent release schedule is on purpose. I think this album is either the last or second to last to fulfilling their contract. They'll probably either put out one more studio set after this and/or do a Compilation.
