Billy Joel - Piano Man...that's what came to mind when I heard the clip.

Billy Joel - Piano Man...that's what came to mind when I heard the clip. I heard that too on the chorus. I liked it way more than I should have based on that clip. I'm very interested to hear the whole version. I don't want to read too much into a clip, but it may be just what Toby needs to hang on at radio for another year.

It's going to take a few more listens for me to be able to form a real opinion on this song but it's not a drinking song per say. Definitely reminds me of Piano Man too, as others have said. Unfortunately, I think Toby's career at radio is done. I doubt this is able to reach the top 40. High 30s at most.

I really like this song. It's catchy, and would be great at bars across America right around closing time. While it is about drinking, I think this is a more effective and less preachy way of getting across the same message that Garth Brooks was with his new song. It's kind of saying "hey i don't care who you are or where you come from, but we can all certainly come together over a beer". I'm really inclined to say this will be a top 10 hit for Toby, but I don't want to jynx him. Definitely is a good direction for him to go though with his next album.

Well, turns out it is the same old Toby Keith drinking/bar type song. It would have been nice if the song surprised me, but I honestly can't blame him for not attempting to get too lyrically deep for today's Country radio.
Not sure if I'm feeling the La la las from Toby, but the overall sound of the song is pleasant and a good sing along song. I can see the video already, ha- the gay person sitting in the redneck's lap and singing away as they sway to the beat with their beer mug ;)
I think it could do well. I'm just happy it sounds fairly country and no Bro involved in any fashion (from the snippet I heard).

There's nothing decidedly catchy about the melody, but it sits well on it's own. I find no fault in the lyrics. Taking them on face value doesn't really hit home the overall message of the song, which to me is exactly the same as Lee Brice's Drinking Class, but portrayed differently.
I love the sound of this and I'm hoping with the current state of more traditional releases, this one can pick up some steam.
That being said, they could have easily called this song "Americans" and taken out the drinking references, making this potentially one of the most patriotic songs released mainstream in the last decade. Either way, can we all agree this is better than the majority of what Toby has done lately?

Not bad, but not one of his best. It kind of sounds like a second-rate "I Love This Bar" (which is probably my favorite Toby Keith song), so I enjoy that approach even if its not nearly as good. It reminds me a bit of "Clancy's Tavern" too. It's a shame that one was never a single.

Rolling Stone Country: Brandy Clark Opens Up About Writing Toby Keith's New SingleA few quotes from that... - "We wanted to write it sort of like a modern day 'Piano Man,'" says Brandy Clark, who co-wrote the track — which you can hear below — with Shane McAnally and Bob DiPiero. "It's like 'When we're in here drinking, who cares what we are outside of this?'" - Of "Drunk Americans" she says, "You see that title and you think, 'Oh, it's a drinking song,' which it is, but I hope that people can listen to it and see that it's really an American song." - "When we finished the song [two years ago] we said, 'This would we be so great for Toby Keith.' And then he passed on it," says Clark with a laugh. "Then he came back around to make another record and the guy at my publishing company pitched it again — after the record was done — and they heard it and said, 'Oh, he's got to go in and do this.' So he did it and now it's the single! I've loved Toby Keith for a long time so I can't wait to hear this."

Have to admit I'm liking it so far, except for the "la la la" part that others have mentioned.

That crossed my mind, definitely. But I like this one better for radio purposes

Some deceptively poignant and/or clever stuff in the lyrics (ball caps and turbans, suits with blue collars), but I just can't get into the melody and production. It's so overly simple and childlike - almost comes off like a nursery rhyme.

Not as big of a start as we've seen for most other songs getting the Clear Channel treatment, but still a big first day. And yes, after 1 day at radio, "Drunk Americans" has already out-peaked Toby's last single (at least on Mediabase).

It will be interesting to see if "Drunk Americans" can get Toby back to the top 10 or be his usual (as of late at least) top 20 peak for a lead single and not generate a lot of buzz. Even though I like this song for what it is, I'm not ready to predict this gets Toby another big hit. I would probably guess on the peaks that "I Like Girls That Drink Beer" and "Drinks After Work" got. I think that country radio has slowly decided to drift away from giving Toby's singles heavy rotation.
I don't know how many top 40 singles Toby has left in his career, but I do believe he doesn't want to go quietly into the night.

Wow this is a huge disappointment to me. I thought given the stellar writers this could've been better than the title suggested but it's not. To me it basically suggests that people can be friendly when theyre drunk. Seriously no more f***in celebratory drinking songs from anyone PLEASE!

"...it's just people lovin' people..." That's what I thought of initially when I heard this, but I think that Garth's song is so much better. I'm sure that the Clear Channel deal will help this go top 20, but I'm not so sure that it would have otherwise.

I think this is a much better way of getting the message across in "People Loving People", and I think this will chart better (not in first week, but in long run) than PLP too.

I just really resent the notion that we have to be drunk Americans to be accepting and tolerant. So I agree with someguy re: People Loving People's message vs. this.

I like this. Just a feel good song, definitely sounds like vintage Toby. I'll take this over the garbage on FGL's album any day of the week.

Comparing it to artists of music you hate. It's so overused and does absolutely nothing to help with the conversation.

It is vintage Toby (should we have expected anything different?). I'm not sure if it's going to be a big hit for him but I can absolutely see this doing well and hitting the top 10 should it find an audience. I don't think radio has quite given up on Toby yet and has just been waiting for him to release something a la Kenny Chesney's "American Kids," albeit with Toby's own stamp on it.
