It's worth noting that she had big mainstream hits outside the US. "It's Oh So Quiet" was a major hit in many countries (and got a lot of video play in the US), and "Hyperballad" and "Army Of Me" were Top 10 hits in the UK as well. She also had several other Top 20 hits in the UK.

Unless you're counting Selmasongs, no Björk album has had less than 10 tracks until now. FAIL. I don't know why I thought Vespertine only had 9 songs. Maybe it felt shorter than it actually was? I stand behind quality vs. quantity though. Maxwell's last album was a good example and he made us wait how long until we got only 9 songs? I'm glad this is getting really good reviews. I plan on listening to it and familiarizing myself with it before I see her in June. At this point, I know her catalog pretty well, except for Biophilia which I completely ignored. It seems Volta is getting a lot of retroactive bashing with the review of Vulnicura. I loved Earth Intruders, Innocence, Dull Flame of Desire, and Wanderlust. Those songs make up for the rest of the album, which I don't even remember, really. To this day, I am still @ Ancestors from Medulla. I used to play that for people when we were smoking just to scare them.

This has an 86 on Metacritic right now-- her highest since Vespertine. Seems to be the popular opinion that's it's her best since that one.

86?? I find it that often, the combined scores, just give above 90 to oldies or rereleases, expanded editions of older stuff. I never understood why some people didn't like Biophilia. Ok well, in part. I hated the 4 songs that previewd the album. But now, I like them all, and up until Vulnicura, was my favorite Björk album.

The album has its moments...I love "Not Get", "Lion Song", and "Atom Dance". Bjork's last AMAZING album was Vespertine IMO. She hasn't really recreated the magic of Debut, Post, Homogenic, and Vespertine.

I haven't loved most of her work since Vespertine either, but it's almost impossible for her to continuously live up to the Debut/Post/Homogenic/Vespertine quartet. That's four nearly flawless albums back to back. I'm just content she's still pushing boundaries and steadily releasing music.

So, is Stonemilker or Black Lake the song that will be counted as lead single? That trailer for Black Lake was UBER COOL! But I had heard she would film a video for Stonemilker before that.

That looks like she was petrified and is now being carried away and burned through by a volcanic eruption.

Glad this is appearing on multiple Best of 2015 lists. Best albums of 2015: No 5 – Vulnicura by Björk Björk laid her heart so bare on her brutal, beautiful ninth album we could hardly listen. But those that persevered found light at the end of a gruelling tunnel Harriet Gibsone @harrietgibsone Monday 14 December 2015 05.00 EST Last modified on Friday 18 December 2015 05.06 EST Her reputation is such that you might imagine an average Sunday afternoon for Björk to involve feeding goji berries to a rare Cuban greater funnel-eared bat with one hand, while completing a 1000-piece Antarctic ice sheet jigsaw puzzle with the other. It was an odd experience, then, when months before the release of Vulnicura, I saw the supreme celestial being strolling past Tescos on Bethnal Green high street, brow furrowed, fingers jabbing at an iPhone. She could almost have passed for an average 50-year-old woman, on her way for a cheeky Nando’s. The sighting was a timely reminder of the actual Björk Guðmundsdóttir – mother and mere mortal. The Icelandic musician’s ninth studio LP broke a three-album run of conceptual, esoteric records centred around nature, politics and technology. Instead, it chronicled the gruelling aftermath of her marriage breakdown, “the most painful thing” she had ever experienced. Confronting her feelings, she began to write for strings, becoming a “violin nerd”, and articulating her heartache in harrowingly expressive compositions. Of course, to settle for the theatrics of strings might seem hackneyed for an artist so future-facing. Which is why, on Vulnicura, Björk punctured these lush arrangements with mechanical beats – Black Lake, for example, began with mournful violins before her grief is pulverised by a sledgehammer sound that emulates both an aching head and a pounding heart. Much like the production on 1997’s Homogenic, the synergy of electronics and acoustic instruments on this album is unsettling but ultimately cathartic. In spite of her supposed otherworldliness, Björk has always had an unvarnished way with words, especially with regards to romance. Take Possibly Maybe’s confessional “I suck my tongue in remembrance of you,” or Venus as A Boy’s observation that his “wicked sense of humour suggests exciting sex”. On Vulnicura, she went so far that her lyrics provided a bizarre predicament for fans. At times her pain was so candidly expressed it bordered on unlistenable, like during her solemn recalling of “every single fuck we had together” on History of Touches. Earlier, on Lionsong, she despondently hoped that “maybe he will come out of this loving me” and, on the nightmarishly brutal Family, asked: “Is there a place where I can pay respects for the death of my family?” No Björk album would be complete without some involvement of the astral, though, and as the record concludes, she seeks solace in the stars: “I am fine tuning my soul to the universal wavelength/No one is a lover alone,” she sings on the Antony Hegarty duet Atom Dance. Björk understands that after every tragedy there is a restored perspective in the world. There is light at the end of the tunnel. And there is incredible music to be made.

I am glad she was so greatly reviewed in a lot of publications, the album deserved that.
However, the videos for it were terrible. Stonemilker was dull. Black Lake promised an amazing video based on the preview, but that was brilliant and what we got was a washed out version of that where nothing happened. Lionsong was convenient, since it was basically her dancing in the album cover's outfit. And Mouth Mantra was equally boring, particularly the second part.
Still, brilliant album!

She earned her 14th Grammy nomination last month with Vulnicura being nominated for Best Alternative Music Album. She's up against Alabama Shakes (my personal favorite), My Morning Jacket, Tame Impala and Wilco. Per Metacritic, her album is the most critically acclaimed (87) so she might take home her first win.

I'll be satisfied with her winning if AS win in any of their other categories.
