Jeremy Camp
With: Kutless & Adam Cappa
October 9th, 2014 - First Assembly of God, Fargo, ND
First off, I've been dying to see Jeremy Camp for years, to the point where I if he came anywhere in North Dakota or Minnesota I would have travelled to his show. Seeing Fargo on the list of tour dates made me nearly fall out of my chair. Obviously I had some pretty high expectations for this incredible man's show and let me tell you, those expectations were shattered. I've been to a lot of concerts, but none have been like this one. Review time!
Adam Cappa:
I actually didn't know who Adam Cappa was until this show, which surprised me, because I follow Christian music pretty closely. Well, I've been missing out. Adam was the perfect opener for such an inspirational and energetic show. He has a stunning voice and stage presence. I honestly wished I could have listened to him longer. I'm not certain of just how many songs he performed, but it was barely a handful. I want to say he did mostly his originals with one cover. I was also able to meet and talk to him after the show and he is really an incredible person with a really fun and kind personality. I can't say a single negative thing about him and I now hold him in very high regards as an artist and a person. My best friend and I definitely made him sign his "SlappaCappa" slap bracelets he had at his merch table (you know, those metal bracelets from the 90's that were basically considered a weapon). He told us they were banned in his school, so this is his way of getting back at them by bringing them back and putting his name on them. He also told us about how he became associated with Jeremy, which I thought was awesome. They are both from Indiana and Jeremy actually partnered with Adam to write his album The Rescue (Which I most definitely purchased that night - he signed that too, haha) and you can definitely hear the influence. Jeremy also signed him to his BEC Recordings label and now Adam has been touring with him ever since. He's a very humble and gifted guy and it was an honor to meet him. I would have go to a concert just to see him perform again and a heartbeat.
Kutless:
I've been a pretty big Kutless fan as well for quite awhile. I remember them coming to my church years ago and not being able to go, so I was thrilled to find out they were coming with Jeremy. They blew me away with their set. I didn't recogonize half the songs, but they did sing killer versions of "What Faith Can Do" and "Strong Tower" which are two of my favorites. It really wouldn't have mattered what the songs they performed, honestly, they are just wonderful performers. There was a whole lot of rock in their set, which I adored. They were the perfect introduction to Jeremy, as their style is very similar. Jon (lead vocalist) also gave a great message and is a wonderful speaker. He's very passionate and gifted. We also met them after the show as well. Such great guys with wonderful personalities.
Jeremy Camp:
I am a pretty massive Jeremy Camp fan and have been for many years, so this experience was out of this world for me. Jeremy is my favorite Christian music artist hands down and I thought I would only ever dream of attending one of his concerts. I have collected all of his live albums as well as watched countless performances on YouTube and such, so I had an idea of exactly what I wanted to hear/see at his show, but really my expectations ended up being "I need to hear _____ and he needs to at least once throughout the show, give one of his incredible sermons." I am so thrilled to say both happened and both were breathtaking. It was incredibly important for me to hear one of his sermons, and I always feared that he would dumb down his "talking" and replace it with more music, which is great, but if you're a Jeremy Camp fan you know how important all of his short or long speeches are. They're truly life altering and his words are driven by so much passion and love for Christ. Of course, these speeches usually lead to a specific song, matching the scripture he's speaking of, which really drives home the message. So back to the music! Jeremy is a very passionate and energy driven performer, so we were on our feet most of the show. Of course there were moments where sitting and taking in the music was necessary. To be completely honest, I couldn't tell you half of the songs he sang, and I know his discography like the back of my hand. I just was not at all focused on memorizing the setlist. It was solely about the experience for me and of course I had my favorites and remember those moments well, but for the most part I was just so sucked into the moment I honestly don't remember most of what he sang, even though I knew 99% of the songs by heart. However, there still were highlight songs. The opening song, "I Will Follow" (small live clip someone posted to YouTube) blew me away and made my excitement and anticipation level for his new album go through the roof. His new album is set for release in February of the new year and if this song is a reflection of what the album is going to be like, I'm going to be knocked off my feet. The moment the song started the friends I was with and I looked at each other with that "whoa" expression. My other highlight songs/favorites were "My God", "This Man", "The Way", and "Reckless." "Reckless" is a flawless song to begin with, but live it's something else. That had to have been the most energetic song of the night. The meaning behind it is wonderful and the message Jeremy delivered with it definitely was burned into my memory. One of my favorite moments of the show was when he decided to sing a medley of some fan favorites, because every show he of course gets so many requests for certain songs and with 9 albums, he can't play them all. Well, two of my favorites, "Let It Fade" and "Take You Back" were included, so I was ecstatic, not thinking he would perform them. Someone did post a video from this show of "Jesus Saves", and although it's really poor quality it's still worth mentioning. So that leaves the one song that I would have been devastated if I didn't hear. It's a huge song in his career, but I did fear him skimming over it at the show, because he has something like 16 #1 songs. However, towards the end of the show he finally did sing the song. It's called "There Will Be A Day." This song means so much to me and is the song that made me a Jeremy Camp fan to begin with. Personally, I believe it's his best and most powerful song. It brought me to tears, and I'm not the crying kind. Words can't describe how emotional and powerful that song is live. Live videos, Live albums, they will never do the song justice like hearing it live in person does. The "venue" I guess you could say, is my favorite for concerts. It's a church of course that has seating in a semi-circle around the stage and I was seated in the balcony, which I always go to because I'm short and can't see over people's heads or arms. This church is the perfect place for a worship concert like this and I much preferred it to an actual entertainment venue like the Fargodome, which I have gone to many concerts, Christian included, at. I felt connected with the artists, instead of looking up at them like they are display or on a pedestal. The stage is elevated no more than 3 small steps above the floor, so you are basically level with the artist and there are no barriers holding you back from the stage. You're there to worship with that artist, not watch them entertain you.
Jeremy is such a humble, powerful and passionate artist and I am so grateful to have been able to attend this show and experience all he has to offer. He exceeded every expectation I had and this was truly the best concert I have ever been to. If you ever get the opportunity to see this man (or Kutless and Adam Cappa) perform, take it.
