With the U2 album, I thought it automatically appeared in iTunes libraries? In any event, without the freebie, I think the album would have easily opened with at least 200K, based on the band's past openings. Easily. And, I don't think anyone should be concerned about U2's viability to sell albums. I only wish we had numbers on what their catalog sales were from the time the 'free' download was released. I bet they did pretty well and probably expanded their already significant base.

Has U2 done any promotion this week?
Why would people think Jessie J would sell well when her current single isn't doing all that well and her 1st cd didn't even sell all that well. Plus "Bang Bang" is already on Ariana's cd and has sold ALOT on ITunes. Why would people run out for her cd????

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6289039/u2s-songs-of-innocence-may-sell-25k-in-first-week-of-retailU2's 'Songs of Innocence' May Sell 25K in First Week of Retail ReleaseBy Keith Caulfield | October 17, 2014 1:30 PM EDT Millions of people have downloaded a free copy of U2's Songs of Innocence album, yet, there are still dedicated fans that are buying the set, following its commercial release on Oct. 14. Industry forecasters suggest the album might sell around 25,000 copies in the U.S., in the week ending Oct. 19. The effort was released through Interscope Records, following five weeks of exclusive availability as a free download through Apple’s iTunes Store. The set bowed through Apple on Sept. 9. One could consider the ability to sell 25,000 copies an achievement, considering how many millions have already consumed the set. On Oct. 9, Apple said that 26 million customers, globally, had downloaded the entire album. And, a total of 81 million Apple users had listened to some portion of the set through iTunes, iTunes Radio and Beats Music. (Presumably, a significant chunk of those figures originated in the U.S. However, U.S.-only consumption figures are not available from Apple or Interscope.) That 25,000-unit figure is lower than the album's forecast a week ago. On Oct. 9, based on pre-orders alone, sources projected that Songs of Innocence might move 70,000 in its first week of commercial availability. A start of 25,000 sold could enable Songs of Innocence to debut in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart next week, granting the band its 11th top 10. (The album was previously barred from charting, as free sets are not eligible for inclusion on Billboard's sales charts and don't count towards sales tracked by Nielsen SoundScan, which supplies data for Billboard's sales-driven rankings.) The group’s last studio effort, 2009's traditionally-released No Line on the Horizon, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 484,000 in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Rock radio is supporting Songs of Innocence: lead single "The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)" pushes 5-3 on Adult Alternative Songs and 36-31 on Alternative Songs.

25K is quite high for an album that everyone who would buy it in week 1 already has.
Many people are suggesting that this is a major flop for U2 becomes some industry guy threw out a 70K number based on pre-orders.
2/3 of those 70K obviously canceled the pre-order because they did not want to buy what they were already given for free. I find 25K to be amazing considering that the people that bought it were in effect getting a second copy at full price.

Hoodie Allen is doing an in-store at the FYE at the mall near me. I didn't realize he had had such a big teen fan base but there are probably about 500 kids with CDs to get signed lined up outside

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6289084/bob-seger-aiming-for-10th-top-10-albumBob Seger Aiming for 10th Top 10 AlbumBy Keith Caulfield | October 17, 2014 7:48 PM EDT The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is riding towards the Billboard 200's top 10 with 'Ride On' Rocker Bob Seger is cruising for his tenth top 10 album with his latest release, Ride On. Industry forecasters suggest the set, released on Oct. 14 through Hideout/Capitol Records, may sell around 55,000 copies in the week ending Oct. 19. That should be enough to secure the album the second-highest entry on the chart, following the presumed No. 1 debut: Florida Georgia Line's new Anything Goes (selling around 190,000 or so). The new Billboard 200’s top 10 will be revealed on Oct. 22. Seger debuted on the chart a little over 45 years ago with Ramblin' Gamblin' Man (credited to Bob Seger System), and has notched a total of 18 entries in his career. He topped the list with 1980's Against the Wind, spending seven weeks atop the chart. His last studio album, 2006’s Face the Promise, debuted and peaked at No. 4. Following Seger, look for You+Me's debut set, Rose Ave., to start with just under 50,000. You+Me is the first effort from the duo of pop superstar Pink and singer/songwriter Dallas Green (who performs under the stage name City and Colour). Other albums that should enter the top 10 next week for the first time: Hoodie Allen's People Keep Talking (30,000 or so), The Game's Blood Moon: Year of the Wolf (25,000 to 30,000) and U2's Songs of Innocence (25,000). On SoundScan's Building chart (below), Florida Georgia Line is No. 1, followed by Jason Aldean's current Billboard 200 champ, Old Boots, New Dirt. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking — reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants. As for the rest of the Building chart’s top 10, You+Me is No. 3, Hoodie Allen is No. 4, Seger is No. 5 and Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour is No. 6. The Game stands at No. 7, with Barbra Streisand's Partners at No. 8 and Jessie J's Sweet Talker at No. 9. Jessie J's album could finish the week with around 20,000 to 25,000, which might not be enough to reach the Billboard 200's top 10. Milky Chance's new release, Sadnecessary closes out the Building chart’s top 10, though, like Jessie J’s new album, it may not debut in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 (it could sell around 15,000). NIELSEN SOUNDSCAN BUILDING CHART Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title 1 NEW Florida Georgia Line Anything Goes 2 1 Jason Aldean Old Boots, New Dirt 3 NEW You+Me Rose Ave. 4 NEW Hoodie Allen People Keep Talking 5 NEW Bob Seger Ride On 6 10 Sam Smith In the Lonely Hour 7 NEW The Game Blood Moon: Year of the Wolf 8 3 Barbra Streisand Partners 9 NEW Jessie J Sweet Talker 10 NEW Milky Chance Sadnecessary The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

Yes, this would have likely been the biggest first week album of the year (so far)

By releasing the album for free, U2 inherently devalued the album. It became a "free album" rather than a gift/discount for iTunes customers.
As such, it's impossible to look at the sales figures and know exactly how well it would have done had the iTunes promotion not happened.
However, I would consider a 25K figure a sign that it probably wasn't going to automatically have a special first week. While this was the easiest, most significant legal way to get a "free" album that I recall, it's still ultimately a free digital album - which is not the same as a free physical album.
If the convenience of iTunes and/or the fact that you can stream albums for free on Spotify or download illegally from the web doesn't dissuade people, particularly in this demographic, from buying a physical album in usual circumstances, I find it hard to believe that it completely killed demand for the physical CD or vinyl in this circumstance.
I thus don't see any way one can confidently state this would have opened to monster numbers. That 25K total, while understandable, is not encouraging.
But again - it's impossible to know either way. Promotion/marketing/sense of value would have been much different.

Well, I wouldn't have said 1 million, I would have said "monster" by 2014 standards. U2 has always been a big seller
The 25K that bought the disc the first week, likely knew they had a copy on itunes already. So these people paid full price for the bonus tracks because they wanted a physical copy to accompany their digital or perhaps some other reason. These would be the 'hardcore' fans in my opinion. The preorders indicated there are some regular fans out there too who would have paid full price for the U2 album had they not been given it for free.
Note: I know there are also some out there with no itunes account that were buying their first copy. Given that this is the first week of release, I would suggest that is a small portion of the 25K

Yikes, U2 may not even score a place in the top 10.... that's pretty sad.

Count me in as one of the people who would have bought the U2 CD had it not been made free on iTunes. I considered their next album one of my most anticipated upcoming confirmed releases (despite no date actually being set - they had been in the studio for like 3 years or something) so it was one I would have bought on release day. With the iTunes free version, I didn't have to and have no intention of buying now.
