I like the chorus. The "who got the lighter" bit and the "I am a Libra, let's balance the scales" bits were cute. The bassline is fun. And the rest is... unfortunate.
This is clearly an attempt to replicate the "classic Gwen" style with a 2014 spin, but it almost sounds like a parody more that? Mess. Exactly why the people asking for old Gwen when 'Baby Don't Lie' dropped needed to stop.

Aside from the "who got the lighter" bit, there is nothing about this that is good. And this will flop harder than "BDL." So out of touch.

I mean, I still don't like it, but at the same time it's an undeniable hook machine so? Maybe a hit? ?!

Why would they launch a new single in December? They should just wait until next year.

I feel like I'm constantly disappointed by Gwen. This is no exception. She and this song can go away.

I listened to this once, laughed, and moved on.
I expect that's what most people will do.

Wow this forum is being quite harsh on this. I can see how this could be polarizing but then again "Baby Don't Lie" was safe Radio fodder and that stalled so it's really anyone's guess what this will do.
Personally I prefer "Spark the Fire" as it exemplifies more of that edge Gwen is known for while almost anyone could have sang "Baby Don't Lie". Don't get me wrong, I liked "BDL" but "STF" sounds more like Gwen's comeback to me and she seems a thousand times more excited about it as well. But ultimately that's why I enjoy Gwen's music so much since she can easily put out a fun talk-sing song like "Hollaback Girl" and then follow it up with a gorgeous pop balled like "Cool" so there is something for everyone.
What is annoying me the most though is that "STF" won't be released to Itunes until 12/1 despite the fact that it's currently available all over the internet and the song is featured in the FIAT commercial. If someone watches the commercial, shazams the song they won't be able to purchase it. Grrrr. >:(

It's smarter to release it next Monday with a performance on the #1 TV Show. They are building the hype for it this week which is good. Just because something leaks doesn't mean you should release just because of that.

But every day the song is out there without being on iTunes likely cannibalizes sales. I say put it up on iTunes tonight, release the video this week to build up hype then have the performance propel it next week.

I'm not convinced at this strategy tho. I shared before that I thought the BDL strategy wasn't effective: itunes, deal, video all in a very short timespan... I'd rather Gwen had spent more minute$ filming a nicer video and released it later to continue the hype and then performed at the voice. That was the comeback single though. I'm afraid radio won't give her too many lives... If she was so much more into STF, then she should've released that and performed it. To me STF has a novelty Wind-it-up quality that I'm not sure can work as second single. I hope so though. Otherwise, she should just scrap the release of the album, continue with features (soundtrack, maroon V, Calvin Harris) and come back later with better material. Of course let's see first how it's received.

This isn't any good at all. "Baby Don't Lie" at least was somewhat catchy. A december release is really late. This is going to perform on the charts like that 50 Cent/Adam Levine song did a few years ago which was also performed on "The Voice" in December of that year.

The hook is an undeniable earworm. This will be a song you either love or hate; it has the same polarizing quality Wind It Up had I think. Excited for the video and Voice performance!

I stan for Gwen. I enjoyed "Baby Don't Lie".
This is horrible. Like, so unbelievably bad. If they were that desperate for a Pharrell track, they should've just pulled a "Radar" on "Yummy".

On Pulse, Hollaback got 90% positive reactions initially. The thread is still here.

On Pulse, Hollaback got 90% positive reactions initially. The thread is still here. LOL not sure about your methodology to come to the 90% but I think "Hollaback Girl" took off so quick (reached #1 in 4 or 5 weeks) that no one even had a chance to dislike the song. I joined Pulse shortly before LAMB came out and I remember the board HATING "What You Waiting For?" and now some of the same members view it as a modern dance-pop classic ;). Overall Pulse tends to favor the more traditional pop songs from Gwen and with mixed results. Pulse was right about "The Sweet Escape" but way off with "4 in the Morning". "Cool" is the only exception where I have yet to come across a single person in existence who dislikes this song yet it "only" reached #10 at Pop Radio. In regards to the talk-sing songs Gwen has put out, I remember "Wind It Up" and "Yummy" being trashed and then a few years later artists like Fergie, Avril Lavigne, and Kesha put out similar talk-sing songs only to have the board stan all over them. Hindsight is always 20/20.

You know what the problem with this comeback is for me. Where's Gwen? I'm sorry but she is pairing up with any hitmaker in the hopes of getting a radio hit but I don't feel that Gwen is anywhere to be found in these first two singles. I really don't care what kind of pop/rock she releases as long as it represents her and where she is in her life now with 3 KIDS. Instead she put herself on The Voice (nothing wrong with this promo) and is chasing trends. Too bad...I think more of Gwen than that. So what happens if nothing blows up. Will they simply scrap the album? Hardly an artist trying to get their art out there, is it. Too bad. why not try writing what you want and release it for your fans....sell 200,000 albums instead of 1,000,000. I bet you are happier for it.

I like this! It's fun and catchy. Reminds me a lot of her other solo stuff. I don't see how people can like songs like "Hollaback Girl" and not this? It's like the same thing except on steroids. Lots of hooks! Crazy production too.

Okay, her past singles I loved on first listen. (Like literally every single one of them except for "Wind It Up") and this one... is growing on me, but I still find it horrendous tbh. The only good part is the chorus.

I loved "Baby Don't Lie." Honestly, they are better off just re-releasing that song this December as the second single than this. The 'Spark the fire/lighter' hook that is the best part of the song does NOT work for me at all...and the rest of the song, like everyone said is problematic to unbearable. Perhaps someone from Gwen's PR or A&R team should pay attention to fans reactions to a song before releasing it.

These singles make it seem like she stopped paying attention to the popular music scene shortly after her last solo album (EIGHT YEARS AGO!!). Both sound like they're from late last decade. I kind of gave the No Doubt album a pass, because I didn't expect as much from that as far as releasing hits goes, but this solo project is so disappointing so far. Hoping she gives us some new wave gems on the album.
