Going back to the online reception of this song, from what I saw ATRL was digging it...I recall "slay" being used quite frequently in the song's thread ;) Right because that word is never overused on ATRL...

I tried listening to this again on Spotify, and I couldn't even finish it. Sped through the video too. I wish BDL had gotten this much of a push, that actually had potential.

Did it go for immediate adds? It was never listed on All Access or FMQB so it doesn't appear to have been pushed at Radio yet and judging from that press release I'm not sure if it will be. Perhaps they are not going to focus on Radio with this album (considering she's a 45 year old female) and instead just throw some songs out there with videos and scattered promo? Not the best strategy but I recall Gwen saying in interviews she wanted to release her music differently this time around. Translation: she wanted it to flop this time around.

It seems like only her diehard fans like this. That's never a good sign for a single. Ask Gaga.

I really liked "Baby Don't Lie", but this song and it's 2nd grade level lyrics need to go somewhere and never return. It worked back in the 2000s, but my style and everyone else's has changed since then...

It would have been nice if she'd released a great upbeat song, as opposed of this subpar pile of crap :(

Going back to the online reception of this song, from what I saw ATRL was digging it...I recall "slay" being used quite frequently in the song's thread ;) Right because that word is never overused on ATRL... Kind of like "flop" on pulse ;) ;) ;) The thing I always found perplexing was the criticism Gwen's songs would receive that people don't apply to recent pop hits by other female artists. For example, people say the lyrics in "Spark the Fire" are weak...well most pop songs aren't lyrical masterpieces. Katy Perry's "Roar" overdosed on cliches, Taylor Swift's musical catalog consists of songs about "haters" and how she is "so over" her latest ex, and Rihanna's "We Found Love" was basically the same two lines repeated a million times. If you want real meaningful lyrics you're best bet is to find them in another genre, definitely not pop. Then there's the "well Gwen can't sing". Well the majority of pop singers these days can't hold much of a tune either. Katy Perry and Taylor Swift's voices aren't much stronger than Gwen's...they all have good pop voices but if you want a vocal powerhouse go listen to some 90s Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston. At the end of the day a lot of these pop songs aren't very different in composition and it comes down to perception and stylistic preference.

Many pop stars write CATCHY songs with awful lyrics, and I don't mind that, as long as it WORKS. This song doesn't work. It sounds awful and then the lyrics don't redeem it in any way, they're grating and it literally drives me insane... The songs you listed were catchy and the songs were pleasant to listen to, this is a hot f**king mess tbh. And who said anything about Gwen's singing? That's not the problem here at all. In fact, I haven't heard anyone say anything about her singing since the comeback (unless it was too much autotune) so I don't see how this part is relevant.

Lyrics only become a problem if the song is bad when it comes to pop music. No one would be complaining about the lyrics here if the song was great. Or, at the very least, they would be a minority opinion.
I would also say delivery matters when it comes to pop music. I distinctly remember loving the lyrics to a Something Corporate song a long time ago and wanting to quote it on facebook *cringe* and then when I went to do so I realized none of the lyrics were that quotable. I realized I didn't love the lyrics-I loved the lyrics in context in the song with Andrew MacMahon's superb delivery conveying a certain meaning to it. I would say the same with We Found Love-same two lyrics repeated over and over, yes, but, as a whole, that song through lyrics, production, and execution is so much more meaningful than just "we found love in a hopeless place" written down on paper.
In short, I almost think Gwen's delivery is more the issue here than just the lyrics. It is similar to her delivery in other tracks, but less effective for me almost like a rapper having a bad day or releasing an uninspired rap because the label wants it. It isn't that I don't like Gwen or her style or voice. This just isn't Gwen at her best.
I am typing this much about Gwen to avoid finishing a dissertation chapter help me :(

Well that's different than just posting "these lyrics suck" or communicating one's opinion via gif file I get what you are saying but "We Found Love" to me is just a fun song to dance to when I'm drunk. Otherwise it's not substantial enough for me to listen to outside of that context. I find "Spark the Fire" energetic, fun, and a natural evolution for solo Gwen. Of course it's no "What You Waiting For?" but it's on par with recent pop hits in my opinion and I like it more than "Baby Don't Lie". I don't get the "demo" vibes from it either, sounds complete to me.

Those Nelly Furtado comparisons are spot on, except Big Hoops >>> this Unfortunately, this. Which is sad because Baby Don't Lie is good and sounded like it would at least go top 15 on the Hot 100. The lack of promo for it versus the large amounts for this is insane. This is a bonus track at best. I can get behind the chorus, but those verses are so bad. I cringe every time the commercial comes on with this in it.

Why do people keep talking about how good Baby dont lie is? The song only peaked at #20 on airplay and is now losing spins and dropping fast. The harsh reality is that pop radio caters to younger artists such as Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande.

She didn't promote that song at all, she gave up on it. It had potential, and the fact that it made it to top 20 proves that... I doubt this will go anywhere near that high. Seriously, if she would have put some effort into promoting it, the song would more than likely still be chugging along, and it's sales would have stabilized higher than where it ended up stabilizing at.

Obviously this won't be taken as a radio single, just another "promo single".

Could it be that Gwen was contractually obligated to release this song? This is why Kylie had to release I Was Gonna Cancel from Kiss Me Once.
