To start with, here's R&R's active rock chart from October 6, 1995. Tons of stuff on here that active wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole today. An especially big LOL at Hootie & The Blowfish and Monster Magnet right next to each other.

Rock & active just split in '95 and the charts had been like that for just a few months as of that issue.
It was an attempt to get a rock format for younger fans that didn't have to be alternative, where most bands were getting their start. I'd say it eventually rendered Rock obsolete as a current music format. A lot of those heritage artists get triple A airplay, too...

The current active and alternative charts both could use a lesson in diversity from that time period. Could you imagine the Goo Goo Dolls charting above Ozzy Osbourne in this day and age?

I mean, that's just because when it started, Active had no identity. It copied Alternative. ;)

A lot of those songs were also in the BillBoard HOT 100, back when it was still a good chart. Soul Asylum, Chili Peppers, Gin Blossoms, The Foos, The Goos, Collective Soul and Green Day were my favourites from that year.
