Usually 1st single is the song which impacts the biggest from the album. But, there are some exceptions. Post your thoughts about them here, either the 2nd single is better musically, or just performs better in the charts :)
Ed Sheeran's "Don't" immediately came to mind. It is way better than "Sing"...

What was Charli XCX's first single? If it was "Boom Clap," BTR is the lesser hit. Whatever Pharrell's 2nd single was definitely did not outdo "Happy" Fancy was way bigger than BW I thought Good Feeling was bigger than Wild Ones, though that may be debatable Taylor's could go either way, I guess

Hilary Duff's "All About You" > "Chasing the Sun" in terms of quality, imo.
Rihanna's "What's My Name" hit #1 before "Only Girl (In the World)" did.

I always felt the first single is the one t catch people's attention, quickly rise and quickly fall.
You save the best song for second. The riskier slow burner. Here are some of my favorite singles that made more of impact (some may be up for debate).
"My Happy Ending," Avril Lavigne "All You Wanted," Michelle Branch "Poker Face," Lady Gaga "Radioactive," Imagine Dragons "How to Save a Life," The Fray "We Belong Together," Mariah Carey "Teardrops on My Guitar," Taylor Swift "Best Thing I Never Had," Beyoncé "This Love," Maroon 5 "One More Night," Maroon 5 "Animals," Maroon 5 "Live Your Life," T.I. ft. Rihanna "Wild Ones," Flo Rida

Matchbox 20 - "3AM" - arguable but I think in the long run, it has outweighed "Push" 3AM was single #3. Push was single #2. The first single was "Long Day" (#8 Active).

Many second singles are in quality better than the lead, and usually that means they perform better too, and for good reason. Saving the better song for the second single ensures a longer shelf life to an album cycle as long as the first single is good/likely to do well.

Parabola was actually the 3rd radio single from Lateralus. The title track was 2nd.
I went by opinion too initially (saying it happens every time w/ the Strokes) and don't even disagree with some. Only the first two were more successful than their predecessors, though.
But it's your opinion please. :s

Rihanna - "Hard" although "Rude Boy" obviously trumped the first 2 singles Russian Roulette was a bigger hit, especailly worldwide.

I can't debate the worldwide stats and I don't particularly remember digital sales for either single but I do remember "Russian Roulette" peaking in the #20-23 range on CHR and "Hard" going top 10.

I think older artists tend to put their best first, cuz they don't get as many chances as younger artists.

Rihanna - "Hard" although "Rude Boy" obviously trumped the first 2 singles Russian Roulette was a bigger hit, especailly worldwide. Rude Boy outperformed Russian Roulette in pretty much every major market. It was also the second worldwide single from the album (Hard was just in the US and then was after Rude Boy in select territories).

I wasn't referencing "Rude Boy" though, that outperformed the first two singles combined. Also, didn't realise "Hard" was a US only single, used to see the video all the time on the TV channels/hear it a lot in general. I'm pretty sure "Russian Roulette" outsold "Hard" despite differences in airplay in the US.
