Karen and Kimberly were on Bobby Bones last week for St Patricks day and Bobby flat out asked them if they were frustrated by the treatment radio has given the song. Karen jumped right in and said that she was. She more or less mentioned that even if it was a lesbian song, it shouldn't matter. That this song is a modern day Jolene and about jealousy and how people should listen to the words. It was mentioned that if radio can play drinking songs as much as they do, they should be able to play this song since there is nothing offensive about it. Bobby went on a rant about it all and then played the song two times while they were in - one going to commericials and once going back. He basically said that he would probably get in trouble for that rant and going against his kind but he was frustrated for them having a top five downloaded song vs where they were on the chart. He might not be the most likable dj/morning show host but you got to give it to him when it comes to being vocal about the crap radio does and how they treat songs like Girl Crush. www.bobbybones.com/media/podcast-the-bobby-bones-show-highlights-ShowHighlights/317-little-big-town-talk-girl-25893790/ Wow, good for Karen for sticking up for this song and saying what ignorant people need to hear. I'm not a fan of this song, honestly, but radio's treatment of females is just insane; it's about time they got called out. This "controversy" seems built around one listeners opinion, and it's ludicrous. I'm starting to think Country music uses this whole "conservative" thing as a marketing angle to get people talking; there's no way one person's ignorant opinion should have gotten so much atention from the mainstream media.

I think the main reason why a lot of people do not like this song is because they misinterpret this as promoting homosexuality/ a lesbian lifestyle. To admit, I was one of those people but after Little Big Town explained it on Country Genius (http://genius.com/4879809) now I understand the meaning of the song Not to be rude, but that is what every post in this thread is saying. And to be rude, I'd try to open up your mind a little more if hearing one song that might be about a same sex relationship automatically makes you dislike a song.

How would it be "promoting" a lesbian lifestyle, anyway?
1. It's not about that topic. 2. If it were about that topic, it would be telling a story about it, not promoting it. Merle Haggard wrote songs about serving a life sentence in jail. Was he promoting crime? Oops, I mean was he promoting "a criminal lifestyle"? Are all the hundreds of country songs about cheating to be heard as endorsements of cheating? Are all the songs about drunkenness promoting drunken behavior?
Do people really feel justified in removing all mention of things (and "lifestyles") they themselves don't participate in? Calling it "promoting" is not fair, or honest. Tell the truth and say you object to any song about topics you don't approve of.
I apologize if I have hijacked the thread. I just couldn't let that "promoting a lesbian lifestyle" go unchallenged.

Lol I always laugh about that too, when people say "it's promoting the lesbian/gay agenda". They act as if people are knocking on your door and asking you to convert from being heterosexual to homosexual.

Well, logically it's not. But homosexuality is a topic about which a lot of people are over-sensitive. I think some people also think exposing people to the concept of homosexuality is promoting it (i.e. it's like people who don't even want to be around alcohol).

Sorry to get off topic but what this song is doing is incredible, It has a shot to be the number one country digital song this week. I can't predict if radio is going to jump on board but if they don't a lot of people are going to be scratching their heads. And if they do jump on board this has the potential to be a monster hit.
It's not the best song in the world, but it's a great song, the story just draws you in, Ever who the singer is ( sorry) sounds great. I love the bedsheet part she sings. And I love the beat at the beginning.
I thought this was dead a few days ago but ...

I agree, it is incredible. This has a peak on the Hot chart HALF that of airplay, which is virtually unreal for a normal charting song receiving so little airplay. It's not as if this one was just released or was a debut, like Craig Wayne Boyd. This is charting on the Hot chart from people hearing it, not necessarily from hype (moreso now).

Reba just posted a picture of herself in a Girl Crush hat, and said that she supports the single.

That's your right an perogative... my non music advice would be to maybe figure out why that kind of song bothers you. Not trying to attack you or anything, Daryl the Beryl, as I know this is a touchy subject. I just hope one day, songs can be about boys like girls, girls liking boys, boys liking boys and girls liking girls and it's not an issue.

I'm glad to read your last post, Daryl. I don't like the words you chose, but you are not on trial and I doubt that anybody here wants to be your judge. We'll all join together and watch this song power back into the top 30....

I don't have an issue with this song at all, but taking these lyrics at face value, I'd argue this song is about a crush more so than jealousy.
For heaven sakes the song is titled "Girl Crush," I just don't see any other explanation that needs to be given to defend the meaning of the song.
As the saying goes "Any publicity is good publicity," I suppose.

One of the main lyrics is "want everything she has". The woman in the song is jealous, because the other woman has everything that the man wants. That's why she sings "I want her long blonde hair, I want her magic touch, yeah 'cause maybe then you'd want me just as much". It's not a hard concept to grasp, and the writers and LBT have said as much--it's a song about jealousy. It's not a song about a woman "crushing" on another woman. It's a song about a woman envying the qualities/characteristics of another woman, because the other woman apparently has everything that this man wants or is attracted to.

I understand what the song is about. The lyric itself is "I gotta girl crush," which implies something other than jealousy going on in the character's mind. If the song is purely about jealousy, why even imply that the character in the song has a girl crush? If anything, I find the songwriting a bit sloppy, if that's the case. We can agree to disagree, though.

The lyrics in this song are the furthest thing from sloppy. They're intricate, sharp, and ingenious.

As the saying goes "Any publicity is good publicity," I suppose. You seem to be picking out 1-2 lines and saying that is what the song is about. Those lines have a context, though. In general people think of a "crush" as thinking about someone, being fixated on someone, etc. It doesn't have to be about love or lust. The narrator of the song has a crush in that she's imagining the girl in the song so she can be her. In a way, it's the reverse of songs where women attack the girl their man cheated with. Maybe the best way to put it is that the song is about the narrator having a fixation on the girl in question?

I already stated I understand what the song is about. I just find the use of the title to be odd. Your recent posts in this thread are making it hard for me to believe that you do understand what the song is about, though. As jenglisbe said, the woman in the song is fixated on the other woman not because she's physically attracted to her and not because she's actually crushing on her, but because she wishes she could be like/look like the other woman so that the man would be attracted to her and want her instead. I think it's very cleverly-written. Just an exquisite song through and through. I haven't read the whole thread yet but Lori McKenna co-wrote this right? Yep! It was written by Lori McKenna along with Liz Rose and Hillary Lindsey. :)

Crush implies romantic feelings, thus why I find the title strange. Which is exactly why it's cleverly-written. You think it's about one thing but it's really not. Anyway, here's a really great article from USA Today that was just posted this morning. Radio can't "Crush" Little Big Town tuneI love this band. I love, love, love Jimi Westbrook too. His responses in that article were perfect. It's also interesting (and cool) to note that a few pop stations are giving this one some curiosity spins. Here's another article in which ABC talked to one of the song's writers, Liz Rose. There's a really cool picture in there of the guys from Brothers Osborne wearing "Girl Crush" hats! :) abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/liz-rose-writer-big-towns-girl-crush-negativity/story?id=29961089

But the official definition of a "girl crush," according to the Oxford dictionary, is a non-sexual liking or admiration for another woman, so I feel that this is a simple matter of fact that this song isn't about bi-lesbian feelings. Maybe if one day there really is a bi- or homo-sexual suggestive song released to country radio, we'll be able to really decide if country radio and listeners are accepting or not, but this can't tell us anything about the country crowd since it just flat out isn't about a woman loving another woman at all, by definition. If anything, this is just a really embarrassing black mark that the country crowd has gotten so hung up over a song that isn't even about lesbianism. I'm not sure I want to know what kind of angry mob would form if there ever came a song that was about same-sex attraction, lol.

GIRL CRUSH. (n.) an overwhelming sense of awe felt for another girl, elicited by varying causes ranging from deep respect to giddy enthusiasm.

And it shouldn't even matter if a song is about lesbianism or not. As matty005 said last night, hopefully there will come a day when country artists can release songs about same-sex relationships without the fear that those songs will get a bunch of backlash. And hopefully those songs are seen as no different than any old regular song about the love between a heterosexual couple.

I hope so too, but the history of country music and some of it's long time fans still have resistance when it comes to things like that. Personally I could care less what people believe in since everybody has free will and can live life the way they I'd like to live it; but even though we've come a long way as a society, there will always be backlash and ignorance.
