Meanwhile, today this is up 100 (!) spins and 655K in audience. I can't help but chuckle at how this "HOW DARE YOU PLAY THIS?!?!?" controversy appears to be having the exact opposite-intended effect.

I actually don't think the people who are bothered by the song intended for this to happen. This is just an educated guess, but I'm thinking the ones who have voiced displeasure don't follow the charts or are involved in which songs are doing good or poorly, chart wise. Who knows, they might have thought that "Girl Crush" was already in the top 20 or perhaps had just gotten released a couple weeks ago. They just simply didn't like it, and their station to stop playing it so they wouldn't have the phantom "agenda" on the airwaves - the chart failings would just come with it and that's where we on Pulse come in, lol. The real reason for the past two updates is the numerous articles, exposing this story to the masses and causing some much needed push back from the other side. After all this controversy erupted, I probably would have guessed this song to rebound on the daily updates, and the 1.2 audience gain since Friday morning is a welcomed sight.

Damn, Karen slayed on Fallon! I love the awesome positive response this has gotten since the "controversy." I hope they push this to Hot AC and AC with a little more instrumentation.
Ps - they might as well go ahead and give them the Grammy now for Best Country Song. It's a lock at this point!

True. But the result is still shaping out not that far removed: They cry "GO AWAY!!!" - and guess what? It ain't going out like that anytime soon. :) I hope they push this to Hot AC and AC with a little more instrumentation. Hee hee, it wouldn't be the first time Capitol backed a song that carried some controversy over lyrics with suggestions of girls kissing girls.

It's still at less than 20 weeks charting, and the sales have been great so we'll see.

Does anyone know if the are performing on the country music awards next month?? if so sales will go through the roof, she sings it great live.
Any is their really a video. I think the one they have out is it.
I think the sales are going to fall after all the publcity is gone but with radio jumping on board they will continue to do well.
When all is said and done I hope you can put this next to pontoon as their most popular songs.

I think the sales are going to fall after all the publcity is gone but with radio jumping on board they will continue to do well. Sales were already quite high even before this "controversy", and I expect this one to continue selling very well. Also, there is still an actual video coming. They are just waiting to release it at the right time (I'm guessing it will be soon, probably within the next 2-3 weeks). They haven't been announced as a performer yet for the ACM Awards, but I think they will probably perform. So far there are 15 performers announced (and 3 of them are the New Artist nominees, which means they'll probably only get about 90 seconds each...although maybe they'll allow the red hot Sam Hunt to perform a full song), and in recent years there have been 20-ish performers, so I think that the ACM's will announce another half dozen performers yet--and I'm expecting LBT to be one of them.

I saw Kacey Musgraves in Providence, RI on Friday night, and she brought up the "controversy":

Wow, this is ahead of Sam Hunt and ZBB now on iTunes. :o I love today's radio update for the song, too. I'm hoping that this trend continues and the song turns into a big hit despite all the ignorant people out there who won't bother to understand it.

"Girl Crush" climbs two spots to #30 on MB this week and increases nearly 1.9 million in audience (nearly 1.6 of it coming the past three days).

Moves up to #17 on Amazon Germany's Country Digital Songs; and it's the #2 current song (Keith Urban F/Eric Church is #1 [#16]). Surprisingly, it's nowhere to be seen in the UK (neither Amazon nor iTunes)

I believe we have the Streisand effect in play here.

I have to say, Little Big Town's PR team has done a masterful job at turning this controversy into a huge win for the song. FWIW, I don't think they started the controversy as some have implied on various social media outlets, but they've definitely used it to their advantage.

I'd understand the controversy if it was actually about lesbians, but it's not even,

Surprisingly, it's nowhere to be seen in the UK (neither Amazon nor iTunes) Is it out in the UK? Usually songs aren't released in the UK until way later than they are everywhere else because with the way their charts work, like 90% of the time, the debut week is the peak for a song.

UK: Honestly, don't know whether the local record company is promoting this tune; probably not. "Pain Killer" with "Girl Crush" and all tracks are individually available digitally. It's just odd that the UK is not responding to the current buzz; country was last year's biggest growing segment. "Pain Killer" is #11 in the Official UK Country Charts. Little Big Town have been in London earlier this year to promote their music. BBC Breakfast

I'm loving all the 'girl crush' cap pics that everyone is posting on social media! Great to see all these country stars who are standing up and supporting the song.

So much weirdness with how this whole "controversy" has been covered.
-- You had these "anonymous" reports of audience complaints prompting some PDs to scale back spins. That turned into exaggerated claims that the song was being yanked from radio.
-- You had Little Big Town sort of taking a "cake and eat it too" approach. Yes, the vocal is stunning and the song is very well done, but the hook is the edgy/provocative slant to the lyrics, so it seemed somewhat disingenuous to act surprised when that edgy/provocative element also produced some negative consequences.
-- Then you had Billboard and now Country Aircheck repudiating the notion of listener/programmer backlash by noting that radio loves it and listeners aren't complaining. The problem, there, is that the song was a dog until this past week. So SOMETHING had to be holding back the spins.
In any event, it's up to #26 on BB, and an aircheck had says 55K sold last week.

This song's on fire now. Yesterday's update was huge (+154 spins, +925k in audience), and today it's up another 56 spins and 522k in audience. It leaped up 6 spots to #26 on Monday's Billboard chart. Its Mediabase position is lagging behind just a bit (have to wait a little longer for songs to go recurrent there), but its up 2 places to #28 there today as well.
I don't see any top 30 songs going recurrent on Billboard this week, unless maybe the bottom falls out on the Joe Nichols tune (I think #22 is as high as Joe's gonna get), but even if Joe stays on, there's a good chance LBT will pass him anyway. "Girl Crush" is also likely to pass Josh Turner, and it might be able to threaten Michael Ray and Frankie Ballard, although both of them had strong updates today too.
I think "Girl Crush" is suddenly on a pace that may get it into the Billboard top 20 by Monday the 13th. Cole Swindell and Darius Rucker will go recurrent that day, and so LBT only needs to pass 4 other songs before then--Josh Turner and Joe Nichols don't seem like they'll be able to put up much of a fight, and after that they'd only need to pass 2 of the 4 from among Kelsea Ballerini, Canaan Smith, Michael Ray, and Frankie Ballard.

When I saw them live last week, the crowd went CRAZY over this song. It's definitely a fan favorite. A fan asked about this song during soundcheck so LBT themselves discussed it and made me see the lyrics in a different way. I appreciate them and the overall song more now. I was getting hung up on the fact that the song depicts being jealous of a girl and not a girl crush, instead of appreciating the lyrics for being a well written take on just how deep jealousy can run. They were discussing that aspect of the lyrics and it made sense to me. It's not the dictionary definition of a girl crush, but it actually makes sense in the context of the song when you think about the obsessive and anguishing turmoil the woman in the song must be going through over this girl and guy being together. Loved seeing yesterday's update and all the support the song and LBT are getting from fellow artists and fans.

Interesting article in this week's CAW. Is it possible there's really hardly a controversy at all besides what's been drummed up by the media? I remember a similar situation for Carrie Underwood's "Something in the Water," as in there were lots of articles online about a non-Christian backlash against Carrie expressing her faith, but I couldn't actually find many negative comments about the song online myself other than a few comments in the category of "eye-rolling."
But then, that begs the question of why this song nearly collapsed last week despite downright amazing digital sales. Is it possible the research scores were too negative? Very confusing.
