I'm guessing that its call-out scores have been a little more negative than a lot of radio stations would like (mostly because it's a slow ballad) and so that's why they've been hesitant to push it up higher in rotation, but now that it's blown up big time on social media (and gotten even higher on iTunes), radio is taking those as other indicators that the song is really popular and that people want to hear it...and thus we are now seeing radio push it into higher rotation.
KMLE Phoenix's Facebook page asked listeners how they felt about this song, and I didn't see a single negative comment on there (and usually the comment sections on social media are where the extreme negative comments come out, because it's social media and not the real world, and therefore people feel like they can hide behind a profile and say stuff that they never would in person). Most commenters either said they loved the song, or said they loved it and wished KMLE was playing it, and KMLE responded to those comments by saying that they have been playing it and that because of all the positive comments, they are likely going to play it even more now.
I don't actually think there were legions of people out there who hated this song. I'm sure there's a few, but I think what happened is that, after one article got published (about that Idaho woman b****ing about the song), all the sudden we had all these positive articles. And that has just really created a huge groundswell of momentum for these guys. There wasn't a controversy here at all. A lot of online media publications (none of which really had anything to do with country music or the country industry) tried to spin it as some big controversy (I guarantee it was only to get "clicks"), but simply put, it just wasn't there.

Issue 04/11/15: This track literally zooms up the Country Streaming Song's chart to #2: 2 - 20 - 5 - 2 - Girl Crush _ Little Big Town
Country streaming turnover is yet again too small to crack the National Top 50

Nice move to #3 on the mongrel chart. Can Little Big Town dethrone Sam Hunt?

^It's doubtful. Sam Hunt's song is already back ahead of Little Big Town's on the iTunes all-genre chart. ("Take Your Time" is #17 and "Girl Crush" is #19.) The two are selling roughly equally yet Hunt's is getting way more airplay. Obviously, in a few weeks Sam will start descending the airplay chart while LBT could continue to climb for another few months, so eventually "Girl Crush" will pass "Take Your Time" and could get to #1 on that chart, but I wouldn't really call that dethroning "Take Your Time" since it'll be falling on its own.

I only said 'dethrone' for a few reasons: 1. Take Your Time is now spending eight weeks at the top of the mongrel chart. 2. The only former #1 left on that chart is Luke Bryan's I See You. 3. The Sam Hunt single is the ONLY one on the mongrel chart certified gold.

I know it has the sales met already for it, just not sure if they went and got it certified yet. Also both of you remember that the "Girl Crush" music video should be debuting next few weeks, so the week it does could offer a good chance if sales stay strong.

Lee Brice is currently at #6 on the mongrel chart with Drinking Class. It isn't showing gold on the mongrel chart. However, it's sales are above gold at 603,000.

This was a great song to follow.
I think this songs strongest days are definitely ahead, I can't wait until they perform it at the cma's, sales are going to go through the roof. It's going to be a perfect platform for the song, it's seems everybody is behind it, it's a high quality song and she can sing it grwat live. It could be a moment.
As for the video,...I don't get it? Is there really a video and what could they possibly be waiting for.

According to CMT's Top 20 the video for Girl Crush will be out within the next few weeks.

So my mom is hung up on the line "I wanna kiss her lips cause they taste like you" and thinks that line is enough to give lesbian overtones. I think she's interpreting it too literally and/or doesn't understand this level of obsession. Your thoughts?

Seriously though, you say this like none of us who've touched on the controversy have noticed this; I'm pretty sure that line is the main reason why ignorant people aren't getting it/paying enough attention to the lyrics.

^ Whoa, I feel dumb for phrasing it that way. Don't post on your phone, Hammer, it makes you laconic.
I meant "your thoughts" as in "is there any way of convincing her that that's not what that line really means"?

She wants to kiss the girl's lips so she knows what her dream man tastes like, since the girl is the one with him. She isn't interested in the girl herself.
[Not referring to Ten Pound Hammer/his mother when I say this --] With the way people have battled with this song's writing, you'd think the lyrics were written by Descartes.

I still don't believe there is a video,
I am hoping its a tad bit controversial.
Am I crazy to think this song may outdo pontoon to become their biggest hit?

This sold another 51k this week, swapping #1 and #2 with Sam Hunt's "Take Your Time."

That's it? I mean, it's a nicely shot video, but it's super boring. There's no story to the video. They could have done so much more with it.

I actually enjoyed the video. They could have gone to more shots of the couple she was jealous over, but overall I liked the treatment of the video and it was superbly shot. It doesn't hurt that the closeups of Karen were stunning either.

It was a basic video, and yes they could have definitely done more with it, but I think it matches the simplicity of the song perfectly and it's a beautiful music video. And yes, Karen looks gorgeous in this.
On a side note, I am so glad I finally appreciate the brilliance that is this song.

Yeah the video is a let down for me.
I get your simplicity thought but to me this is cheap, boring and dull.
I know it's not all that bad but I can't help but to be disappointed.

Yeah, as we've seen, this isn't really a simple song, and I was hoping a video would've matched its complexity and beauty.

I would've liked to see more shots of the couple she's jealous of like sabre14 said, but the video was still great. I think that the black-and-white with the disco ball was a great idea. It really fit the feel of the song to me, and Karen looked stunning. Maybe a little in the way of a plot line would've been nice, but it wasn't overly necessary, imo.

The video is shot very nicely, and it's fitting to the song, but I can't help view this as a missed opportunity to push the envelope a bit, and make the video a little more exciting, give it a story, or something. If they were ever to think about pushing this to Pop radio at some point, I think a more edgier/adventurous video would have helped more.

I agree,
Biggest problem with the video, I don't care if I ever watch it again,
I imagine this is what their Grammy performance is going to look like, might be a little cooler their with all the lights out, just the strobe lights and a light on the band, maybe then I'll watch the video again.

The video helped it in digital sales, it now has a shot of finishing second in country digital songs this week. I'm hoping with higher radio Airplay, streaming and sales it has a new peak on the hot 100.
i had really high hopes for the cma performance, but after the video let me down ...I'm trying to stay guarded. That said I still think it will get it best sales week after the performance, But who knows maybe they will perform the next next single and really let me down.

I would find it hard for their performance to be a letdown in any way. All they have to do is stand there on stage and sing the song, and LBT is always on-point vocally. It'll probably have a similar theme to the video (maybe a big disco ball?), which I'd love. 2. There's no way they'll perform the next single. "Girl Crush" isn't even close to peaking yet.
