Blake Shelton FTW! From Aircheck Today:
» Country Mileage: NBC-TV's Saturday Night Live (1/24) with host and musical guest Blake Shelton averaged a 4.7 rating/12 share by households and a 2.2/10 among Adults 18-49 in LPM-monitored markets, according to Zap2It.com. That's the second-best showing for SNL this season by households behind the Nov. 1 episode hosted by Chris Rock featuring musical guest Prince.

I took a couple more listens to this song and I have decided to take back my comments because this song is really good.

Really hoping this hits #1 soon so he can sing a new song at the ACM's and hopefully that song is going to be Gonna "Lonely Tonight" will have definitely peaked (most likely at #1) before the ACM's. It will most likely peak in early March or possibly as early as the end of this month. I hope the next single is "Sangria" though. I think that's far and away the best song on the album. It's got that classic JT Harding sound to it (Harding co-wrote Kenny Chesney's "Somewhere With You", Jake Owen's "Alone With You", and Keith Urban's "Somewhere In My Car"). Songs like "Gonna" and "A Girl" are radio-friendly for sure, but they don't show any artistic growth in my opinion. They just strike me as the typical run-of-the-mill 'safe' radio-friendly type of song. "Sangria", on the other hand, is a really interesting and well-written song. It's a different sound for Blake, but it really works. He sounds really, really good on it and I think it would do very well at radio. I also think "Anyone Else" and "Good Country Song" are both good country songs (heh), but I doubt either will be considered for radio. "Just South Of Heaven" is another solid track that does seem like a likely single, but I just really want "Sangria" at some point. The only song I absolutely don't wanna see released is "Buzzin'"--that one is super annoying. If "Sangria" gets released it would easily rank among my favorite Blake singles, right up there with "Austin", "Ol' Red", and "The Baby".

When the album first came out, the two standout songs to me were "Lonely Tonight" and "Sangria". "Sangria" makes perfect sense as the 3rd single, as it would peak sometime during June-July, and while it may not sound like the typical summer smash we are accustomed to these days, it definitely has a summer vibe to it (Sangria obviously being a popular summer time drink). I too think it offers something a little different from Blake that we have not seen yet. If it's not "Sangria", then I would like to see the title track be released, as that one is a little bit of a rocker that we really haven't gotten from Blake in quite some time. But I am all in on "Sangria" being the next single.

Judging by the Spotify rankins for the songs on Blake Shelton's album, it looks like "Just South of Heaven" is by far the next most popular with listeners so I'm putting that one down as my prediction for the third single (although I do anticipate a release of "Sangria" at some point). But I'm still very skeptical about the future of Blake Shelton's #1 streak. Surely Universal and Luke Bryan's team want to get the record for longest #1 country airplay streak in BDS tracking history for Luke at some point, and so every additional #1 Blake Shelton gets makes it one song tougher for Capitol Nashville to beat his record. I do anticipate that the music from Luke's next album will be white hot as ever and Blake's album is full of traditional-leaning music that doesn't appear to be connecting very much with listeners (judging by the relatively low album sales). "Lonely Tonight" has a bit more tempo than a lot of the other songs on Blake's album and surprisingly ended up being huge on iTunes but I honestly can't see "Sangria" or "Just South of Heaven" being anywhere near as popular. It seems to me that if Blake Shelton ever runs into unfortunate timing on the charts and peaks around the same time as a Luke Bryan song, as Florida Georgia Line have with their past three singles, there's a strong chance he could lose his #1 streak.

Of course if he runs into unfortunate timing he could peak below #1. That has happened plenty of times to big artists and big songs (FGL with "This Is How We Roll", Jason Aldean with both "Tattoos on this Town" and "My Kinda Party", Carrie Underwood with "Something In The Water"). That's part of the amazing thing about his streak is that he's been able to avoid all possible shortcomings during that stretch. Part of it is due to his popularity, but a lot is also do to just pure luck. I do think Blake's popularity is thinning just a tad bit though, as his sales have been down considerably (Although who's haven't been lately?). However, I think radio is still recognizing him as a big draw, and despite lackluster sales and minimum "passion" with any of his singles, I still don't think he will have much trouble this album cycle unless he puts out a complete dud (And except for Buzzin', not sure If I hear one on his new album). Radio just seems to have it programmed into their heads to play Blake on repeat. It also doesn't help that he's a pretty friendly and personal guy, and that him and Miranda are THE power couple of the whole genre.

Kind of meaningless to most but I find it interesting that WYRK has only spun this 20 times this past week and no more than 23 times in one week during its chart run. For them to not play a song more than 20 times in a week when its in the top 5 or 6 songs in the country is few and far between. Meanwhile, they have others that are far below it on the singles chart ranked above it in spins. "Baby Be My Love Song" (34), "Say You Do" (29), "Trailer Hitch" (29), "God Made Girls" (28) , "A Guy Walks Into A Bar" (27), "Don't It" (23), "Freestyle" (23), "Homegrown" (21). The first three I'm not complaining about. They played the snot out of "Neon Light" when it was at the point "Lonely Tonight" is though. There's still a few weeks to go and I'm sure its spins will increase when it does hit #1. Figures right? The first song I have loved from Blake in years and my local station is giving it the short straw.

I was thinking they'd go with "Just South Of Heaven" and then "Sangria", but I'm really, really happy because I like "Sangria" the best. "Heaven" is solid too so hopefully that'll come 4th.
"Sangria" is one of the best things Blake's ever recorded, in my opinion. I love anything JT Harding writes (Kenny Chesney's "Somewhere With You", Jake Owen's "Alone With You", Keith Urban's "Somewhere In My Car").

Just after I pushed back my predictions one week in the thread for "Ain't Worth the Whiskey" to account for Thomas Rhett getting a second week at #1 on Mediabase and Blake getting two weeks at #1 on Billboard, Blake manages to knock "Make Me Wanna" from #1 on Mediabase this week, which will mean that this should start falling next week since Warner has secured their #1. I guess I should have taken the Mediabase Building Chart into account this week, which has been showing "Lonely Tonight" as the building #1. I don't anticipate Blake's label will try to get more than one week at the top since they've got two other songs in the top 10 to worry about right now ("Mean to Me" and "Ain't Worth the Whiskey"). Next week should see Jason Aldean at #1, followed by Brett Eldredge, etc.

Even if it does start falling, we've all pretty much concluded that Like a Cowboy is done. I don't think Just Gettin Started is gaining fast enough to take over number one from this one, unless this falls rapidly, which I do not expect it to. It got to the top fairly easily and judging by how slowly songs like I See You and Make Me Wanna left the top spot after their peaks, I could see this one getting two Billboard weeks even without a bullet in its second week.

Blake's label appears to want a second week at #1 for this. This is only the second recent time I can remember Warner being competitive with radio promotion, the first being last year when "Doin' What She Likes" was pushed for two weeks at #1 at the expense of "Goodnight Kiss," so I definitely wonder if Warner is tougher on Broken Bow due to Jason Aldean snapping Cole Swindell's only chance of having a debut single go to #1. ("When She Says Baby" was pushed hard and got three weeks at #1 on Billboard, holding "Chillin' It" to a #2 peak.) Right now I'm still not quite expecting Blake to get the second week, though. As kml567 noted, Jason had been gaining at a pretty slow rate inside the top 10, but this was mostly due to some crazy chart manipulation to slow down "Just Gettin' Started" for the sake of keeping "Like a Cowboy" ahead. Now that Randy Houser's song is (finally) on the way down, Jason is probably looking at a pretty strong week and I could see him making the leap to #1 by this weekend.

I love this song. The melody is really striking. I hope this can help jumpstart something good for Ashely Monroe. She is so underrated it's ridiculous.
