The dreadful Shoo-Bee-Doo aside, this is really good. Pretender is one of her hidden gems imo.

This album is okay. As a whole, it doesn't stick out to me. Most of the singles are primarily the only songs I enjoy from here. My favorite song from her was included on the re-release ♡♡♡

"Over and Over" and "Stay" are the should've been singles.
"Angel" is probably my favorite single from her catalog 1982-1988 even though it doesn't have a real video and is largely lost and forgotten between the brighter stars of Material Girl, Crazy for You, and Into the Groove.

The singles from this album are TOP NOTCH. And they definitely made the right choices, pretty flawless string actually.
The album tracks are largely forgettable for me outside of "Shoo-Bee-Doo," which is so under-appreciated. And I said it in the single thread already, but I don't care for the album version of "LDLHA." The Soulpower remix is the best version and thankfully saw a single release over a decade later.

I like "Shoo Bee Doo." :) "Over and Over" epitomizes her, and it's one of my favorite Madonna tracks period.
I see "Pretender" as the weak link. And I'll always prefer the STR update of LDLHA, though this one is memorable for the crying at the end.

Omg! I can't stand the Like A Virgin song! It's the most annoying song she ever put out!! I do love the rest of the songs on the album. Pretender and Shoo Bee Dee are my favorites!

SBD was the b side of the Into the Groove vinyl my brother bought. We hated it lol. I bought the LAV cassette a couple years later and it was good to discover Stay (love it) and Pretender (smooth and pleasant enough). I had already heard OAO because the #1 radio station in the country played it at some point-albeit with no traction as it didn't make the weekly top 30. I liked it but not enough to have it chart in my ranking either. LTLH was slightly improved with the STR album but again not enough. I just neither believe her not like that type of vibe for her. The singles were perfection though!!! This era (including the soundtrack songs) turned me into a fan. 4 solid songs. Dress you up is such a great pop rock song!! The intro, the guitar, her raspiness, the post-instrumental back and forth between her and the background male voice. Whew! Of course LAV was a moment in history! The song's release and it becoming a rapid smash back home. The iconic video then the MTV awards, etc. Plus the song was ace. Just don't give me any shortened edit >:( also love the extended version. MG was the best followup. Catchy as f. My mom thought it was her best song lol (of course she wasn't having anything with songs about a virgin except in church...): And Angel is so buttery, the giggling and the wee wee weee were adorable :) love how she sounds So many good memories!!

Some people on the board may have heard already some of this stuff:
- I became a fan of this album with DRESS YOU UP. I became obsessed with the live video and anything and everything about her. - I had heard Material Girl which was fun, but didn't make me a fan. I had even watched the video and as the teenager I was and clueless about Monroe's career details, I had no idea about the inspiration of the video. I was like "that dress, her look is too formal. I wish she would be cooler and dress more modern like Cyndi Lauper", ha ha. I thought that pink dress was her regular style. - In recent years I rarely read good things regarding Stay and Pretender, but I ALWAYS TOTALLY LOVED THOSE SONGS since back in the day. - Always wished a video for Angel was filmed. Who knows if there every was a storyline for it.
Amazing era and even more when you add to it Crazy For You, Into The Groove and Gambler (huge hit in Peru those days).

I've noticed most hardcore Madonna fans rank LAV towards the bottom of their list of her discography. Me personally, I love a lot, almost all of this album actually. In fact looking at the tracklist I don't skip anything. Add to it CFY and ITG and it's 🔥

I think this is my least favorite Madonna album. The big singles - "Like A Virgin" and "Material Girl," are among my least favorite of hers, and I don't really care for them. However, "Dress You Up" is an '80s highlight, and "Angel," "Over and Over," and "Pretender" are also pretty delightful. Most of the other album tracks are OK, but I think the production dated pretty horribly, unlike her first album.
