11/13/14
Usher At The TD Garden, Boston, MA
Special Guests:
August Alsina & D.J. Cassidy
Now before I delve into the flawless Usher performance of the night, let me review the special guests that came before him.
DJ Cassidy
Dj Cassidy kicked things off with playing his own songs, and a collection of his favorite throwback tracks. He has a ear for rhythm because it was essentially the freshest batch of music ever to be mixed to keep the crowd moving, and it was fire! Here is a list songs that were notably played.
Bruno Mars - Treasure
DJ Cassidy - Calling All Hearts
Disclosure - Latch
Bell Biv DeVoe - Poison
Notorious B.I.G. - Mo Money Mo Problems
Prince - I Wanna Be Your Lover
DJ Cassidy - Make The World Go Round
Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock - It Takes Two
Kiesza - Hideaway
Micheal Jackson - Don't Stop Till' You Get Enough
Micheal Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
As far as stage presence goes, he's mostly just working the turntables grooving to the music, and putting in a dance or two. The music alone made this section enjoyable, and couldn't wait was going to come next.
August Alsina
By far the weakest performance of the night, and while I do think that Usher gave is 100% all in his performance, I was very underwhelmed by August. He's essentially just a wannabe Chris Brown, and the nasally voice didn't help either. Like 90% of his lyrics were just him cursing very slowly over sub-par trap beats. He talked about how he used to be homeless a few years ago, and now gets to be on the same stage with Usher, and that Boston has the most beautiful girls, which is quite touching of him, but still didn't like the music. OK, now that we got the special guests out of the way, It's time for Usher Baby!
Usher
Words cannot describe how mind blown I was at his performance. Everything, every second was stellar from beginning to end. He was sweating like crazy, and took his performances seriously, which had like a different set up for each song. My eyes were popped once I saw the bright neon lights, and eyedropping effects on screen of the OMG performance thinking to myself, "Yep I'm in 2015 alright " Things started to be dramatically different when it shifted to "Lil Freak" which had this red backdrop and seductive tone to it. I'm not kidding, you see Usher's fingers telling you to "come here" on the main screen of the stage, and I was like :O. Everyone was singing along to Usher on "U Remind Me", and You Make Me Wanna" like it was the National Anthem. This kind of thing I'm new too, as this was my first concert going, but still, It made me feel good inside. Things really got going when he performed "Climax", and you had all these Fire, Wind effects on screen to the tempo of the music, and it made the song feel so epic. While performing some of the new singles, this isn't anything new to concert-goers but the smoke and fire erupting from the stage floor while he was performing made it feel so perfect. He also performed a Delicious melody to his catchiest hook-features ("I Need A Girl", "Lovers & Friends",...) which was also sweet, as well playing fan favorites like "Twisted", and "Bad Girl". His charisma throughout the night was astonishing. He's such a down-to earth guy when he's performing and speaks, like the way he says things at the concert like "I Love You Boston" so passionately, I tear a little inside. The effects were so eye-dropping and stellar that I felt that the money paid was well worth it. He also played the drums, and you can tell he has a real passion for the music that he performs by the way he plays.
By far my favorite moment of the night was the "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love" performance, which not only one of my favorite songs by him, but had bright colorful disco lights gleaming from the stage, and I was like "This isn't Daft Punk?" Another key moment was when he told everyone to hold up their cameras to flashlight, to "Burn", and it was very touching, it's just a shame my phone was dead by that time. He said that "U Got It Bad" was one of the songs he had trouble singing along too while performing, which I didn't realize until now when he performed it. He also called up some people in the audience to dance with him, which was also spectacular. He closed the night before performing the last song, on how it's been 3 years since he came to Boston, and how he wouldn't be hear if weren't for his fans, and made a heart symbol to show how much he loves his fan. He closed it with "Without You", and was bright and cheery, and ended the concert on a high note. Oh, yeah, and for some reason, he started wearing a raccoon hat towards the end of the show, which was pretty weird, but hey, It's Usher, and it looked pretty amusing.
I can tell you right now for as long as I live, that I will not find a concert as perfectly enjoyable as this one. Sure I didn't like Alsina's performance, but Usher just took the house down with all his charismatic personality, and total control of the music. He was always moving, and looked like something you would actually see on TV, by just the craft of it all. He really his one of the greatest performers of our time, and I'm glad I went.
