My biggest issue with streaming is that it could count multiple listens from one person. If someone buys an album but listens to it every day, it would only count as one purchase. However with streaming, someone could not buy an album, but then stream it numerous times, and it would count numerous times (unless they've addressed this somehow and I've missed it. Sorry if that's the case). One person's listening behavior will not impact the chart. There aren't enough hours in the day. It's all about revenue contibution. When you buy an album, your dollars are counted up front. When you stream, they're spread over a longer period of time and commensurate with how much you listen yo the album.

Question. If I listen to one song off an album on Spotify 1500 times in one week, would it count as an album sale? Or do I have to listen to the entire album 1500 times?
Regardless you'd have to listen to the same 4 minute song over and over for 375 minutes (approximately 6 and a half hours a week) for it to count as an album sale, if I understand it correctly. Even longer if you need to listen to the entire album.

Why all the speculation on the exact formula? Is any one person one actually going to try to listen to something that much to give it a single sale?

Even being generous and saying you listened to a 3 minute song on loop, that's still 75 hours of play. Nobody is going to do that.

We've had download days so that stans can rebuy singles they already bought - guaranteed some psycho stan will figure out how to put favorite song/track on an endless loop and run it in background or secondary computer/device. (Find the shortest track on CD - perhaps an interlude?) Listening has nothing to do with it! Just wait!

Even longer if you need to listen to the entire album. No one person is going to realistically be able to impact chart position. Stream the same same off an album 1500 times on one computer in continuous repeat would take 100 hours, assuming a 4 minute song. That is over 4 days in a week that is only 7 days long. All that to get ONE album sale counted on this chart. You would need an army of computers running 24/7 to get any impact, even then how many "album sales" would we be really talking about I suppose it is possible but, why would someone want to?

(Find the shortest track on CD - perhaps an interlude?) Listening has nothing to do with it! Just wait! And how much of an impact do these days have? None. A few hundred people on a stan site rebuying a song is not impacting the charts. Buying a song and then only streaming is not impacting the charts. And even if it did, what's the difference? People were buying 10 copies of 1989 to get the different polaroids. How is buying 10 copies of a CD any different than streaming the album on loop?

The few isolated obsessed people will likely attempt to manipulate the charts but in the end. They likely won't be able tokeep it up very long and it won't have any noticeable impact.

www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/newsPage.cgi?news10222m01TAYLOR’S FIFTH #1 IN SIX WEEKS Swift Stays on Top; Pentatonix Remains Hot on Her Heels; AC/DC Debuts Top 3 December 9, 2014 No, this is not the chart story you read last week. Taylor Swift’s staying power just happens to be a force to be reckoned with. Big Machine’s Pop Princess and multiple Grammy nominee now goes #1 for the fifth time in its six weeks on the HITS Building Album Sales Chart with 228k (-18%). In case you’re placing bets in what’s possibly the most angelic bidding pool for the largest record of the year come the end of this month, fellow multiple nominee Disney’s Frozen ST (#12, 34k, -43%) is currently at 3.3m YTD, while 1989 is at 2.7m. RCA’s Pentatonix, who recently scored their first Grammy nom, continue to bring a cappella music to the forefront, as That’s Christmas to Me enjoys a second week at #2, duplicating last week's showing of 206k and soaring past Gold status. By the way, the group’s previous holiday set, PTXmas, rockets #31-14 with 31k, up 29%. Meanwhile, rock icons AC/DC bow at #3 with 165k for their new Columbia set, Rock or Bust. And no, you didn’t hit the bong too hard. Pink Floyd’s famed 1973 release, Dark Side of the Moon, is indeed up over 850% with 36k, powered by its listing as a 99 cent album of the week at Google Play. The album happens to make the perfect present for under the tree. It also pairs well with tree. Speaking of things found under the tree, holiday albums continue to sell, sell, sell this week. Warner Bros.’ Idina Menzel leaps #10-4, snagging 62k (+11%), while Reprise’s Michael Buble moves #11-6, raking in another 56k (+10%) and Sparrow’s Michael W. Smith and Friends re-enters the chart at #15 with 29k (+88%). Capitol's Mary J. Blige enjoys a Top 10 chart debut with her 12th studio album. The London Sessions appears at #9 with 49k. When we compare the SPS (Sales Plus Streaming) Chart, we find Taylor widening her lead over Pentatonix considerably, gaining nearly 44k thanks entirely to single sales, as she's not streaming anywhere. Meanwhile, singles and streams power Capitol's Grammy magnet Sam Smith into the Top 5 in SPS (he's #8 on the album chart), while SYCO/Columbia's One Direction moves #5-4. But the biggest beneficiary of an SPS tally is Columbia's Best Song nominee Hozier, who rides huge single sales and streams to a 23k gain and the #11 spot on the new chart (he's #35 on the album countdown). Also making big gains thanks to singles and streams are Grammy nominees Meghan Trainor (+19k), Ed Sheeran (+18k), Beyoncé (+15k) and Ariana Grande (+14k), among others.

Next week should be interesting. Taylor could potentially drop to #3 in raw sales if Pentatonix holds steady.

Great for Hozier, that album will go gold which is very impressive! 190k last week with SS + 16k with HITS = 206,000He still has a way to go, but with more Christmas sales and The Grammys, a Gold album cert is very possible.
