In an attempt to decipher the meaning of this song, I think she's basically just telling a guy to screw off because he can't handle the type of girl she is. The reference to the actual wagon would just infer a sassy childish take on the theme, further supported by the musical style and lyrical delivery.
Another thing I really enjoy about this one is how dangerous it is: there is almost no discernible musical structure. The song seemingly switches between verse and *chorus* at random, with multiple different riffs and a solo/bridge only 1 minute into the song. Then a minute later she takes it down a notch and cools the instrumentation to deliver some more sass.
This song is such a cluster musically; it's terrific.

I'm confused by the lyrics of the song -- who wouldn't be? -- but even more confused by poster after poster referring to an "axel." That's a figure-skating term, to the best of my knowledge. An "axle" is a car part. Is there some reason to think there's some kind of play on words here about skating? I don't see it, myself. Too bad Miranda didn't release this song last January - it would have been a good theme song for the Sochi Winter Olympics.

I have loved this song since hearing the record for,the first time. And still do. I'm glad they released it.
The song clearly comes off as a metaphor as what a little girl would say to a little boy but used the broken part metaphors for her adult self as a warning to the adult wild boy trying to "pick her up." It's a song about individualism and "girl power." It's about her being able to do every thing a man does and that she's not just gonna allow him to lead her. Plenty of men do not want women like that (but I'd say many also do). That's why this will be divisive with people. It's a love or hate it kind of song.
Also, I don't see how it is (as stated by someone above) "patronizing" to anyone.

I feel like if they didn't tease us with Smokin' and Drinkin', I wouldn't be as appalled by the choice. But I'm reallllly rooting against this one now. Hopefully the fourth single from this great album can redeem these hideous single choices so far.

For me, this song is just as terrible, annoying, and nails on a chalkboard, as FlaGa Line's Sun Daze.

This song is pretty terrible and I am really surprised they are going with this as a single. I was also surprised (but very pleasantly surprised) that they were going with "Smoking and Drinking," but to release this instead? I mean, it's a unique song, but I can't see radio embracing this. It might be fun for an album track, but that's about it.

I still don't know how I feel about this as a radio single, but I'm pulling for it to do well. I love the personality, lyrics and melody, and the quirkiness is precisely what makes this song work so well. Miranda pulls off the quirky vibe well, and, frankly, I couldn't see any of her peers pulling out all the stops in terms of production and attitude the way Lambert does here. Successful or not, this is the Miranda I love; fearless, quirky and full of attitude. Leave it to the females to being radio the shot of personality it desperately needs. Watch out, boys.

The word you used on the last page was "patronizing," and that's the word he quoted in his post, not "polarizing." The words don't mean the same thing. This song is definitely going to be polarizing, and the comments in this thread reflect that, but patronizing isn't an appropriate way to describe it, imo. That's what I believe he was going for there.

Love those last two comments. However, radio still refuses to give females the shot they deserve. Outside of Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood, who would be the third big female artist now that Taylor Swift has gone pop with her CD, 1989?

Well even though i'm not optimistic about her chances on today's radio, Reba is returning with her brand new song so maybe her? If you want to go the critical acclaim route Kacey Musgraves is a good candidate. Hopefully Maddie & Tae can hold on.. Aside from that no one....oh shoot forgot about Raelynn

This is exactly the kind of song I want to hear Miranda sing. I think she's gotten a little too far away at times from the sassy female who broke through with Kerosene and Gunpowder & Lead. I think this song could have similar charts runs, with a peak no higher than 10-6 on charts, but I think it will sell well, have a big hit music video (I'll go out on a limb and predict it to garner a CMT award nomination), and will be more memorable in the long run than say a safer choice like Another Sunday In The South (which is a solid song itself).

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this one. It works as an album track as a way to infuse some of that Miranda attitude we expect, but releasing this after the similarly spunky "Somethin' Bad" doesn't work for me. She's really starting to force that 'badass, too wild for her man' image and it's starting to wear on me a little bit.
"Smokin' And Drinkin'" seemed like a unique song that would work as a good change of pace of Miranda.

Have just started to hear this on radio. While I normally like Miranda -- this one is not a good experience, I find this a very annoying song to hear in that format driving to work Literally a station-changer. Fortunately we have two country stations in our market - makes it easier to go back and forth ;)

Love this song and love this girl! While I don't think it's the best choice for radio, you have to give her credit for sticking to her guns and staying true to herself. Ran isn't afraid of, well anything really, lol!

Ran isn't afraid of, well anything really, lol! Yeah, that's very true! I love the song, but really don't like it as a single. As long as it goes top 5, it should be OK, and hopefully pave the way for a fourth single to contend for #1.

I'm glad to see this one get off to a great start at radio so far. Up to #27 on Billboard only after 5 weeks, and with there not being too much competition in front of it, besides ZBB and Sam Hunt, this one should continue to zoom up the charts. I hope this can be the long deserved #1 for Miranda.

I think that this is an example of Frank Liddell's messy production enhancing a song. This is meant to be loud and sloppy in a punk kind of way and he nails it.
Frank: THIS is the kind of song you use a screaming guitar solo on, not a tender ballad like "Over You".

^That's what I love about this song: it is the anti-typical radio song we hear nowadays. It doesn't have a predictable song structure that we've all become so accustomed too. It dares to be edgy and different, but is still quite catchy. This will probably be a very popular song during her shows.

^Yeah her performance was amazing. She looked great, sang with style and sass, and overall brought a pretty electric performance in my opinion.
